Best shows currently on British TV

i'm all for equal opportunites but it's when companies attempt to fill quotas that it gets ridiculous. if she was the best person for the job, it doesnt matter if she's got one arm or one eye, she should get the job.
in regards to scaring children, i saw a news story about this and most kids really didnt care that she only had one arm, it was the parents that were more worried.
at the end of the day, i know a couple of people with one arm, one of which will be at the paralympics in 2012, and they are no different and albeit you will naturally double take at first because it's not what u expect, as soon as you get to know them you don't realise, it's just a feature of them, like someone with a monobrow!

Exactly - I was just keen to hear other people's take on it.
Plus, actually she's quite saucy (in a guitarist from the band in Powder kind of way ;))

Slightly off topic, but as a parent, what are your thoughts on the "it has to be oh so PC" output of CBeebies?

Surely the one armed presenter is taking it this all a bit too far (one of the parenting message boards the Mrs goes on, apparently are "up in arms" ;) about it and keep complaining that it is scaring the children, so the girl is now trying to cover up her disabilty as best as she can)!!!

It's good for kids to see that people come in all shapes, sizes, nationalities, abilities....whatever. That way, we don't project our own prejudices onto them unnecessarily.

I have noticed that there are no muslims in Balamory.

Unintentional oversight or evidence of an anti-Islamic agenda?

Political correctness in children's programmes is ridiculous, it started with having regional representation in the presenters on Blue Peter. As with anything, you should employ the best person for the job. If that happens to be someone with a physical disability then so be it.

As an aside, our junior school (my kids' old one) is bang smack next door to a school for severely disabled children. The children from both schools have shared music and drama workshops and, our kids are far more tolerant of disabilities as a result of this kind of interaction.

As for good tv, I'd like to give a recommendation for David Starkey's excellent historical analysis in the "Mind of a Tyrant", an insight into Henry VIII's raison d'etre.

Ah, but don't forget they've got a gay, 2 people of afro-carribbean origin, a disabled person and an old woman with alcohol related issues who no doubt stinks of wee!!!

Good recent shows:
Harry Hill's TV Burp
The Apprentice
Lead Balloon
The IT Crowd
Gavin & Stacey
Any Cutting Edge documentary
Come Dine With Me
Jonathan Creek (Xmas 08 special)

Recent US shows of note:
ER
Rescue Me
Sleeper Cell
The Riches (starring Eddie Izzard & Minnie Driver)

all excellent. TV Burp is probably the best programme on telly right now, it's got better and better! I love The Inbetweeners, and Charlie Brooker's current NewsWipe series is fantastic.

other than that there isn't much UK TV i watch at the moment. The Apprentice is a bit dull now.

I think OBL has to watch Stewart Lee to understand what political correctness is.

ps I think it's all stuff and nonsense. The kids don't care if they're black, gay or black and gay (Andi Peters?) or have one or three arms. And anyway, even if they do ask, it's a good way for parents to talk to their kids about why people are different.

Otherwise, Masterchef, the Henry VIII stuff (ps Starkey's bent as well), Big Cook Little Cook, Harry Hill's TV Burp, and Arena documentaries.

Exactly - kids generally just don't notice and when they do ask loads of questions to satisfy their curiosity (using starting with 'but why') then accept it and move on.

The stuff I have on series link:

TV Burp (when on)
The Wire
ER
Mad Men
Revista de la Liga
Boots N All
Big League Weekend 2

I'll usually give the Secret Millionaire a chance, sometimes it is excellent, other times less so. Mrs W was watching Hell's Kitchen last night, that was dreadful.

She's alright -

To find that pic I typed 'one armed cbeebies presenter' into Google, is that really wrong and am I going to hell?

Not as tasty as Sarah Jane though..
