Post-Match Thread and Ratings Ballyfermot United 0 - 0 Southend United, 30th July, pre-season friendly

Honest question, if tonight's result is embarrassing, what would a defeat have been? A season defining result perhaps? It's all about keeping it in proportion, if a couple of those misses had gone in a different view point gets taken, they didn't so doom and gloom hovers over the emerald Isle. Kev has clearly stated he needs to bring in the 'right' players because we are light in certain areas. It's all about trying to be the best we can come August 10th and I believe the work will be done on and off the pitch between now and then in an effort to achieve that.
Exactly… it’s pre season. It’s best to find the faults now and adjust where needed… we also didn’t play a good few starters too like Cardwell and Cav etc

From the official site. Sounds like Trialist A (Raff Pedder) had a good game.

Blues’ pre-season fixture in Ireland this evening resulted in a goalless draw against Leinster Senior League outfit Ballyfermot United.

We had by far the better of the chances and struck the woodwork on multiple occasions, but couldn’t find a breakthrough.

Kevin Maher named a strong XI, Danny Waldron and Josh Walker starting up front with Beau MacDonald getting another opportunity to impress in the midfield. Two trialists were included in the squad.

Kick-off

A good-sized crowd was gathered at Ballyfermot’s Coldcut Ground, including a sizable number of travelling Shrimpers who had made the trip to the outskirts of Dublin.

It was almost the hosts who got the first goal when Collin Andeng Ndi had to make a flying save to deny Dylan Nolan from long range.

From there, the first half was all Southend, with Walker involved in most of the attacking play. He was denied by home ‘keeper Mikey Quinn on multiple occasions, one volley was tipped over the bar and another effort was pushed onto the same piece of woodwork.

Joe Gubbins and Waldron also came close, but the opening 45 minutes came to a close without a goal at either end.

HALF-TIME: Ballyfermot United 0-0 Southend United

Andeng Ndi made another good save at the start of the second period, this time flicking a Darryl Henderson effort over the bar.

Trialist A was in impressive form on the Emerald Isle, driving into the penalty area on 52 minutes, which led to a Jack Wood shot that was sliced over the bar.

10 minutes later, the trialist wriggled his way into a shooting position near the byline but Quinn smothered his effort.

Arguably the most eye-catching of Andeng Ndi’s saves came from Lorcan Kelly as he showed lightning-fast reactions to keep out the number nine’s effort.

In the final 20 minutes of the game, Wood skewed one wide and Trialist A smacked a shot against the post after another positive run.

Blues couldn’t find a goal that their play deserved, but eight players got 90 minutes under their belt as the season-opener against York City edges closer.

FULL-TIME: Ballyfermot United 0-0 Southend United

Next for Maher’s side is the much shorter trip to take on National League South outfit Chelmsford City this coming Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

Southend United: Andeng Ndi (Trialist B 75’), Taylor, Kensdale, Gubbins, Bridge (Coker 77’), Wood, Morton, Trialist A, MacDonald, Walker (Faulkner 46’), Waldron. Unused substitutes: Scott-Morriss, Ralph, Miley, Cardwell.

can I just point out that Gus, Cards, Ralph and Cav were all unused subs.
Not saying they would have changed the game but seems to me this was a game to get minutes into those slightly behind ie Taylor, Waldron and look at trialists
A disjointed performance is inevitable when you put out a hotchpotch side like that.

That’s not a side that is ever going to play a League game together.

The 3 centre-mids and 2 forwards had fewer starts for us between them than Oli Coker and this time last year Oli Coker hadn’t started a game.

Happens every year in the Essex Senior Cup as well when an XI containing senior players gets beaten by a side way down the leagues who is actually a team and therefore balanced and not just XI players you’re trying to give minutes to.

Weird. Not even seen Otseh-Taiwo in the warm up pictures. Only Pedder was meant to be travelling of the trialists.

Yeah, I think that might have been a mistake in copying across the squad from the Gills game.

He hasn’t been in any of the photos of them training. Charlie Brown and Piers Hatcliff were also named in that team sheet but there’s no evidence of them having travelled either. The trialist B came on for Collin so that wasn’t him and he wasn’t named on the bench.

As I recall we have scored more goals in this season's pre season friendlies than we did last season but then we scored four in our season opener against one of the stronger teams in the league.

Scoring a lot of goals in pre season does not guarantee a free scoring league campaign.

Seeing us hitting the woodwork a lot in pre season is a personal preference of mine as I prefer to see those to go in when it really matters.

I'm guessing their keeper's song is an easy one for fans of a certain vintage to crack on with ...

We are a trigger happy bunch at times on here aren’t we?! No need for panic, we didn’t lose and sounds like we were the better side. It happens. Maher has them simmering and is just bringing them up to the boil to coincide with York at home. No point them being peak now when we are still over a week away from kick off.

who cares about friendly results as you say it’s all about fitness and looking for his strongest eleven. It’s all about 3 points against York next week COYB

Ballyfermots season has already started so probably have better fitness levels. We benched a lot of our best players. I think some are a tad over reacting. At this rate all hell will break loose when we lose a non league game this season.
