Legend?
Why do I keep on reading that Steve Tilson was a legend? Let’s get this right as a player Steve was a very average player. Most fans at the time felt he was lazy !!!! and to say he was loyal well crap, the only reason he stayed was because no “Big teams” wanted him.
As a manager he inherited a decent team with the likes of Gower, Flahavan etc already in the team, and then got lucky by being given Eastwood. On the pitch Tactics / subs were poor and motivation skills non existence, as we know got rid of some very good players for nothing. A good manager yes legend NO. Lets face it he got use relegated twice

You're brave!!

Just to pick you up on one point, Coventry (and maybe Derby?) bid £600,000 for Tilson as I recall early-mid 90s and I'm sure Tilson turned it down.

Sure others will correct any of that if its wrong.

Hang on a minute, lets be fair to the bloke he helped the Club to two consecutive promotions which has to count for a lot. I think we should leave it as he did a great job but came to the end of the line. Plenty of managers dont stay in a job as long as he did and he may well move on and do great things elsewhere.

Somewhat ironically the second promotion may have been his undoing. Lets be honest, in a season where we were all hoping for mid table respectability, we went and won the Division. Then we all wanted to stay up which meant signing players on Championship money and there began the downfall.

Coventry (division one at the time) did indeed come in for him during the 91-92 season and bid around £400,000. Tilly stated that he was happy at Southend and never wanted to leave - there's your loyalty. As for Tilly being lazy, I never thought of him that way and I know of many who felt the same way, you obviously did and that's your opinion. He scored many very important goals during the early 90's and more than played his part in getting us into England's second tier for the first time in our history - I think he netted double figures during the 90-91 promotion campaign.
I've often had the discussion with my mate as to who would get into an all time Blues team in my life time and although Otto had more talent and natural ability I'd go for Tilly cos of what he achieved in his time at the club and the longevity of his career with us.
As for his managerial career, this has been debated to death of late, but he is our most successful manager of all time - fact. You can argue the negatives about his time in charge all day long (and you've mentioned a few.)
Tilly guided us to the league one title and being as that has never been done before in our history means he is a Southend United legend - both as a player and manager!

Agree with that - everyone knows I have my beefs with Tilly as a manager, but I'm not going to deny the man his success (though I feel there are some truths in some of what BBWG said) and I'll give credit where its due, that when we look back in the annuls of time, the record books will say Tilson oversaw the most succesful period in our clubs history to date and took us to 2 'major' finals.

The term 'legend' is banded about too easily, but at face value of the word, Tilson has got to be described as a legend of Southend United FC.

BTW Welly7, your mate is right, Otto probably edges it :D

Obviously having a very boring Bank Holiday and keen to inject some "debate"...

Just because they're blue as they come, does stop them from being a prat.

Just want to apologise for this. I was drunk, and it wasn't necessary. However it's true that you can be Blue and a prat... just like I was.

I agree with Steveo, that Badger and PBoreham take both ends of the spectrum, which is frustrating at times for those who can see shades of grey.

No, I believe that the plan that Ron has had all along is one that will benefit all of us once it comes to fruition. We all take gambles at certain points in our lives to make things better.

Ron does not have any of our interests at heart, just his bank balance and his pension pot. You don't come by a pad on benfleet road and flashy cars by looking out for the benefit of everyone, only number 1, and believe me, if he can flog that ground for enough money to sainsbury's or whoever and he's in the black after this nightmare business venture he will not give a **** about FF unless he can see some more wonga. but right now I would say he's working on his exit plan before he has to send his missus out to deal with his mess again...

id be amazed his exit plan wasnt worked out a long time ago. i reckon the credit crunch has delayed it somewhat.

You know this for a fact then? You must be a good friend of Ron if you know so much about him or should w "believe you" that everyone who has a decent house and drives a Bentley has only ever looked after number 1?

You might be right, but I dont see how you can possibly know that. Your post has the whiff of jealousy about it simply because he has done well for himself. Some people succeed more than others - deal with it. The communist utopia was a myth - simply a different set of people at the top lining their pockets and driving the Bentleys - 'do as I say not as I do' a bit like the Arthur Scargills of the world.

Ron has built a business himself, employing many people and making a success of himself. Good luck to him. That has nothing to do with his record of achievement (or lack thereof, depending on which speculation we choose to believe) as Chairman of Southend United.

It always amazes me how in this country we despise successful people and fantasise about them being 'knocked down a peg or two' while glorifying vacuous twerps such as Jade Goody and Jordan :headbang:

for those people that have come across Ron in the past or know him from his school days he had no interest in southend or football and despised the football playing commoners.......a property developer comes along and asset strips a club by buying the ground (I use the term buying lightly) and then low and behold rents it back to the same club. And guess what? the stadium just happens to be a short hop the town centre and has great transport links to london..... well I never.

If that does not point to one thing and one thing only then I'm not sure what bigger clue people are looking for....

It may not be so bad if there were a businessman at the helm who had an interest in football or the club....at least that would be tolerable compared to him
