Andy Murray

same ole same ole from a british tennis player

He's a Jock, nothing to do with me. Not fit to string Timmy's racquets. Yeah, Henman didn't win a Grand Slam, but he got to Semi-finals and performed better than any English player since Fred Perry. Murray ain't done sh!t.

I think the difference is that Murray has the potential to win a grand slam and IMO he will win one in the next few years. As for him being "Not fit to string Timmy's racquets", lets just say we disagree :D

...and he's won. Great result and again underlining his potential. Fighting back after losing the first set (he was a mini break up in the tie-break too) was also impressive.

absolutely class performance from murray (well what i can gather from the live-text on BBC.co.uk), he really is a special talent and with all his aspects of his game working, he can beat anyone!

Federer, a four-time champion, has lost only two matches since playing in Dubai for the first time in 2002 — to Rainer Schuettler of Germany in the round-of-16 in 2002 and Rafael Nadal in the 2006 final.

The Times' build up to the match

Could all posters stop refering to Mr Murray as a "sweaty" as our Scottish contingent find the phrase offensive and bordering on racism.

Thanking you all in anticipation.

Can you also please point out and clarify this is people in Southend with Scottish heritage who have complained and not those of us who are exiled from Essex and live here now?

I was waiting for this comment to be honest, I had been pre-warned, it's a sad sad day when SZ has to resort to political correctness. Surely "sweaty" as a term is a jokey way of referring to Scottish people? Jocko or Psycotic racist c**t is far more offensive from my perspective.

I don't want to make more of this situation that is necessary, as I personally feel it was an ongoing disagreement between 2 regular posters, which hopefully has now been diffused. However, would it not be far more fairer to put this question to the SZ public as a vote "Is the term "Sweaty" as in the shortened version of the popular rhyming slang term for Jock, "Sweaty Sock", offensive & bordering on racism?"

Rich,

Like you i want to see this debate come to an end but i feel that it is important to point out a really important fact, if people are accused of being racists and that has been posted in a public forum, that could have serious repercussions. I admit to being at times a wee bit Jingoistic but not racist.....with out wanting to insult anyone’s intelligence...below is the definitions.

Jingoism is defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as "extreme patriotism in the form of aggressive foreign policy".In practice, it refers to sections of the general public who advocate the use of threats of or actual force against other countries in order to safeguard what they perceive as their country's national interests, and colloquially to excessive bias in judging one's own country as superior to others.

Racism according to the Oxford English Dictionary, racism is a belief or ideology that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, (in my opinion that is British people) especially to distinguish it as being either superior or inferior to another race or races

For the record, I do like Scotland a hell of a lot, i have very good Scottish friends, I work for a Scottish company, I am a member of a Scottish registered charity, I am registered under Disclosure Scotland and help my wife run the Aberdeen Girls Brigade......ow and i am married to a Scottish woman.

But his career is going pretty well at the moment in spite of the setback in Melbourne. I'd have thought a Masters Series title and a grand slam semi should be in his sights this year.

Target reached then ;). Good work Murray - hoping, but not hopeful, that he beats Nadal on Saturday.
