Post-Match Thread and Ratings Aldershot 0-0 Southend Utd

Let me suggest this- anyone remember a CM entering the opposition box this evening? anyone got a screenshot? I think part of it is we don’t get forward in numbers and at pace? What do I know- very little by my own admission..

)
Just can't agree with this.
The only time I've seen a striker/forward change a team from dire to remotely successful was collymore
He was a player who created opportunities and scores by himself.
This is incredibly rare.
Good forwards need opportunities and clear scoring opportunities (these are different).
We might be fortunate to create a couple of opps but I don't remember many or any team crafted clear scoring opportunities.
I haven't seen the data but from what I've seen and remember it's going to be very low.
Compare with a Barnet, York or Gateshead for example.
This football is as bad as Murphy's 532 only the ball stays on the ground a little more.
Collymore helped him but didn't save him.
Football was still dire
Both Freddie Eastwood and Simon Cox had that ability but the team was not dire at those times. Who remembers Cox’s hat trick against Portsmouth? And Eastwood’s five or six against the wonderful Colchester United home and away?

Couldn't attend in person so decided to stream and what a disappointment that was.The cameraman couldn't get the right angles and had the shakes.Whilst the commentators were ok the sound quality was so so poor.Have in the past made complaints to the NL but obviously to no avail was hoping these issues were no more. Its clearly done to each individual club to produce these streams but would have thought they were monitored by the NL obviously not.

Hmmmmm ;

The midweek clash between Aldershot Town and Southend United finished goalless as the best chance of the game fell in the opening 90 seconds in a fairly even affair.

The Shots perhaps should have taken the lead in just the second minute after Kai Corbett did brilliantly to continue his high press and beat Southend ‘keeper Collin Andeng-Ndi to the ball and square it across to Jack Barham, but thinking he had more time than he did, allowed Adam Crowther to race back and slide in to make a crucial intervention with the Shrimpers goal wide open.

Though this was the first chance of the match, it was the only time that either side had a clear cut chance to take the lead in a first-half that was devoid of real attacking threat.

In the tenth minute, Southend came close as Oli Coker launched an effort from distance that hit the side netting as it curled in towards goal but in truth it was never seriously threatening Marcus Dewhurst.

Southend enjoyed the majority of the half-chances that were littered throughout the rest of the first-half but the most of those missed the target or were easy for Dewhurst to gather.

HALF-TIME

Dewhurst had to be called into action early into the second-half to spring across his goal and keep out a header from Southend right-back and Vanarama National League third top scorer, Gus Scott-Morriss, in the 53rd minute.

Tommy Widdrington made a triple substitution in the 57th minute changing all three of his attacking combination in the hope that fresh legs would disrupt Southend’s defence and within a few minutes they were causing problems.

Josh Barrett played a smart ball out to Hady Ghandour who advanced down the left side of the Shots attack, but his very dangerous low cross flew across goal with no-one in the middle to meet it.

Barrett was again showing his quality and intuition not long later when he seemed to have eyes in the back of his head as he was able to turn and play a first-time pass out to Ashley Akpan behind him, but Akpan’s ball forward was deflected behind for a corner before the Shots could threaten Southend’s goal.

Just like the first-half, however, it was another 45 minutes in which both goals were rarely threatened and Marcus Dewhurst and Collin Andeng-Ndi certainly had one of the easiest nights of their careers so far.

The Shots defence did well to withstand a barrage of pressure in the final few minutes of the game, standing up well and keeping their shape and structure with Southend unable to get a shot on goal or break into the box despite a fair period of time deep in Aldershot territory.

You not the only one, I thought it’s was my new TV doing that 😂

JB has lost his mojo and seemed reluctant to take on his marker, is he worried too much about losing possession?

It isn’t his mojo Bridge has lost but his decoy runner.

He needs someone supporting him to so he has the option of the pass or to take on his man. He excels at beating his man in two on twos but is a fraction as effective in one on ones. Give him more support!

He’s also more effective attacking from wingback.

That reminds me of Paul Sturrock. Whenever we lost a few games he changed tack to make us difficult to beat, even if that was at the expense of our attacking threat. I guess the idea was to rebuild confidence. Once that had worked he then worked on the attack.

It seemed to work for him...

Did it work for Sturrock? He was forced out as his free-scoring football was apparently dull as it was too direct.

Ron Martin made some pretty atrocious decisions during his tenure but sacking Paul Sturrock on the eve of a cup final is right up there imho.

So Coker was by far the best player and he gets hauled off. Husin yet again is anonymous but is immovable! Kaf yet again doesn’t get a start but as soon as he comes on things liven up with his driving forward…..sorry but the manager just amazes me with all his stubborn , negative, face fitting selections, will never get better than very average under him!!!
Working his way back to full fitness?
Remember also when KAF came on there were 73 minutes in the legs of Aldershot players.
And given the players available to him right now, what team should KM select? For example, Wood and Bonne instead of...?

As the season wears on it seems fairly obvious we have sunk to a level of mediocrity which the coaching staff seem unable to rectify. There is a staleness and predictability about our style of play which seems too deep rooted now. Has Maher taken us as far as he can and are we regressing? If clean sheets are the height of our ambition maybe it's time for change.
Nope!
I think KM knows what's in front of him, and he's no choice but to work with it.
It's 'predictable' because ball control is at a premium and needs two/three touches when crying out for one, while the 'mediocrity' comes from the fair amount of mediocrity wearing a blue, red, or sky-blue shirt.

Oh to have Nick Alliker, Paul Clark/Glen Pennyfather every match?
Stuart Smith last night would rather waffle on about the number 10 bus that has just gone by and April Smith is just not right for me, has she swallowed the coaching manual…..sorry but totally detracts from the match day experience listening to these two.
Disagree!
But it's just an opinion. Thought both did their jobs last night. In fact, Ms Smith's insight was welcome.

What a cracking atmosphere last night, we sang from the first whistle to the very end. The roof makes such a difference in acoustics, and reminds me of years ago being in the North Bank. Imagine us home fans getting that stand back with safe standing installed? I enjoyed the game yesterday, and after going to Barnet and more recently Eastleigh in the FA Cup, I can see an improvement in fitness levels, pressing and general play. What is lacking, as previous posters have pointed out is a proven goal scorer, strong, greedy and hungry with pace, which would be the final piece of the puzzle. If we had that last night IMHO, we would have come away with 3 points. I know that these type of players are hard to come by, and every club is tracking or after these players, but until then we are going to struggle getting goals. A couple of times yesterday where players were in great positions to get a shot away, but looked to pass to someone wide? FFS take a shot, you never know it might go in.

Also a thank-you to the fellow Shrimper that parked in the Red Lion car park, who let me know that Just Park was not recognised by the pub itself, and needed to input our registrations into a screen in the pub, without doing that I would have incurred a £100 fine. Thanks again to him 👍 🙏 :LoyalSupporter:

Just a foot note to that, I rang Just Park and informed them about this, got a refund and a further £5 credit for any further bookings going forward.

Agree with you Wiggy, don't fall off your stool or anyone else for that matter. Oi Smiffy, cut the drivel out tell me where the ball is FFS and where it's heading. Do that, and April's technical summaries work great.

As far as you are concerned Smiffy, you could do with the BBC pitch grid to work from imo and be informative of what's happening that you can see and l can't.l don't
give a hoot about off the pitch opinions and bus routes l want to know what's happening on the pitch, that you can see and listeners can't! So cut away and get to it!

A game we should have won for sure. Positives are the third consecutive clean sheet away from home. We now look solid and hard to beat and need to bring that back to Roots Hall, where our next 3 games are to be played.
Was pleased that Aldershot seemed to rest their normal front three and they duly rarely threatened despite Nathan Ralph’s latest dodgy back pass. They did have short spells in the first half and in the second half for 10 minutes when the front 3 were substituted by their more technically gifted replacements. Other than that it was total domination but the negatives are we did not even look like scoring. Their cheating **** of a goalkeeper had more action playacting twice and duly got Pepple booked early to pacify his pressing to avoid another card.
I think back to the Solihull game when we scored 4 and what was missing last night. Running from midfield with the ball directly towards goal and for that KAF must return. I would give Husin a rest Saturday as he is not in the greatest form. Coker looks okay after injury but still is only doing 60 minutes. He is steady and we certainly lose our shape a bit when he goes off. Bridge needs to revert to LWB, he is lost anywhere else and does not warrant a start unless LWB. However the defence looks so settled now and do you drop Gubbins at home for the creativity of Bridge? Bonne will score but he is no good up front on his own, he was winning headers and flicking them onto nobody as no one was close. Difficult dilemmas but for sure KAF to start for me.

Andeng-Ndi 7
Taylor 8 MOTM
Crowther 7.5
Gubbins 7.5
GSM 7
Coker 7
Morton 7.5
Husin 6
Ralph 6.5
Pepple 7
Walker 7

Bonne 6.5
Bridge 5.5
KAF 6.5

Any of the back 3 for MOTM but Taylor just edged it, Mr Consistent. Kev needs to contemplate a change to stimulate our blunt goal threat, will he though or just hope for a change in fortune, Ala another Solihull out of the blue goal feast?
Credit and mention to Tommy Widdrington for giving us a clap at the end, I think in his heart of hearts he knows he got away with one last night. He won’t say it publicly like the Aldershot review which comments on a fairly even game, wtf. UTB

We moved the ball a lot quicker with Bridge and Wes last season down that right side. The midfield are all too similar. Kev seems to suggest he wants another striker but we need different options in the midfield. Moncur was the hope but hasnt done much to justify his reputation.
Because unfortunately for Moncur he too needs movement infront of him to play killer balls into even when he finds half a yard out players are scrambling to run behind him … honestly I’ve seen rugby games played forward more than us last night (disclaimer I haven’t really rugby is for posh ****s )
