Firstly, who ever called you a tin pot club is a bit out of order. Ok, we have gates twice your size but so does the likes of Sheffield Utd to us....... NOT RIGHT, You're a fan of your club.

As for Thompson, I'm not sure and not too upset he's gone. The first 3 years he really wasn't much at the club and was pretty crap at the start of last season, until we brought Anton in. They seemed to gel and Anton was always talking to him.

In my honest opinion, he's a mid table lg1 player - No more...... If we're serious about promotion this season then, I wouldn't have him as a regular starter.

I think the upset with our fans on here is the way he went about things after we worked hard to improve his game.

Don't take much notice of the TIN POT stuff.

Fair enough, the way some have reacted makes me think there is a decent player in there but from what others have said I can imagine it can be a task in itself bringing it out of him, got to say though what an away day it was for us this year one of the best I've ever been on I really thought Southend would be dearer than it is!

As we have seen on countless occasions over the last few years, the key is to have 2 central defenders who can play together ............. one of the two will normally be seen as being "weaker" but together the 2 players make a good partnership. I thought we had that in Thommo and Anton.

For the Bury fans on this site, whether Thommo does well for you I think will depend on who he has around him - he is quite physical with the opposition strikers and gets stuck in and now that he has the experience under his belt I think he will make a good impression with the fans.

As for us (Southend United) I can see White being a reasonable replacement (based on his appearances there last season) but I really would like to see some competition for the place and we know that Anton can go off with niggles and tight hamstrings for instance.

He will be playing alongside Nathan Cameron or tom aldred (if he signs)

For the real Bury fans on here and not someone just trolling you have got yourself a brave, committed, decent, honest CB. He surprised everyone last season and added a lot more strings to his bow....so to speak.

How much he learnt from Anton is debateable but he certainly didn't have the confidence previously, to read a pass and nip in front and rob the forward.

The main reason he won't be favoured by some coaches higher up is his height. He does not add any threat going forward for set-pieces. Think of Bolton last season. Having said that we can't deliver a decent free kick or corner anyway so its difficult for any CB.....Look how well Bolger has done for Fleetwood in the oppo's box this season.

As we found last season there aren't many big number 9's in L1 anyway so Thompson had some great games for us. Good luck to the Lad he has made his choice for various reasons but they are the right ones for him personally. So I for one won't hold a grudge.

Glad you enjoyed the delights of Southend last season, shame like all clubs you had some utter knobs who wanted to target the family side of our ground. Still that's Football and we look forward to taking 6 points off of you again next season:winking:

What do you mean, you've lost me...

From your point of view I would pleased. As I have said where his agent should be shot (I think he could of got a better move, big L1 club or even lowly Championship and so I am a bit non-plused) the flip side has to be by definition you have done well.

I think Ferdinand helped him immensely but to some degree he is now helped. I don't think he would go backwards just because Anton's not there. Although centre back pairing are important. He's not great in the air but then nor is Anton so we were susceptible at set pieces. I assume you will partner him with someone who is dominant in the air and left footed in which case you are cooking with gas..

Was surprised and also sorry to see him go--unlike Atkinson,he's a good player at this level and possibly higher. What we need to replace him is someone a bit taller and dominant in the air, ideally faster too-definitely NOT John White!

A shame that you couldn't bemoan the loss of Thompson without a couple of digs at 2 players who, whatever their limitations, have never given less than 100%. Were you around in the late 90s / early 00s when most players weren't up to the job, and generally didn't care. I'd have had 11 Atkinsons and Whites in those days.

Bad news, this. Not just that he's gone, but who he's gone to. If Ryan Leonard does end up at Sheff Utd, I can sort of understand that - but losing Thompson at his age to Bury doesn't sit well with me. How's he made that decision? He was first choice here, same division, and surely we're better located for him? That only leaves money and surely Bury aren't paying massively different wages to us?

I think you find the people who run the club are jokers ,not many clubs have been waiting for a new ground for over 20 years
numerous tax bills bloody sacking groundsman in mid winter because the pitch was frozen managing directors saying that a certain player is rubbish you can not just make it up the list goes on

Burys mentality last season was to spend big early, even though it landed them in some bother they could be following the same plan this season.

Move on everyone, we can get better players in. We have been blessed with a relatively settled core over the last few seasons, but can see a mini rebuild this season.

All the Brown bashing is so boring....

I like Atkinson but he's a big-standard hard-working midfielder and is replaceable. Thompson hurts though. He's young, talented and has been a huge investment for the club both in terms of money and effort.

I've said on here many times that I think last seasons team us the best Southend team I've ever seen and like all fans I hope we're not seeing it get dismantled.

That's a bold statement, unless you are under 25. I rate the team that had Collymore in it a better team. What a season that was. You take Cox, Ranger, Lenny and Ferdy out, there's not much left really.

I think if you took Collymore out of that team, it wouldn't have been very good!!!

However I do believe we did play some of the best football last season than I've seen in a long while; I'm not saying it was the best, but it was certainly up there with the Webb and Fry (post Collymore) periods, which IMO are the other times we played decent football.

In terms of Thommo, it wouldn't have hurt so much if he had gone to a bigger side, and no disrespect to Bury, but their average attendance is half ours, so I can't see how that is an improvement!
