Brown and Layne were always cheap gambles, 9 times out of 10 non league gambles don't pay off although given their age I'm surprised we don't just give them a chance to prove themselves on loan.
Ellis Brown wasn't a non-league gamble though.

Clifford will be playing League One /Championship football within the next 3 or 4 years. Huge mistake from PB

Williams out on loan to Conference team, good move.

Others - Pah

Disappointed for Connor, poor discipline early on but once he improved, Brown put him in the long grass. Chance to change things a bit with a couple of new faces. Not convinced on Browns ability, or our scouts to get any talent in.

We don't have a lot of luck with Chelsea youngsters, do we? Lee Sawyer....now, Conor Clifford.

For everyone saying the younger players had a chance to 'shine' in development games....no they didn't ....they were used to 'develop' the 'non scoring' main squad.

Can't complain. He clearly wants to free up some wages so we can get some more players in mostly youth that won't make the grade and Clifford who hasn't been involved for quite a while so no change on the pitch and Phil doing what must be done to get us up. I could say I am happy to see this. Wish all the players the best for the future especially Clifford I think he is a good player but then I am not the manager.
neither is phil brown, more of a mis management manager in my opinion and the sooner he is transfer listed the better.

I thought some said he did well in pre-season and was scoring goals. Also was getting goals and doing well from some reports while on loan.

I seriously don't understand why we don't just loan Layne, Brown, Banton and Farrell out to Conference or Conference South level and see how they do. If they do poorly, then their contract is up at the end of the season. If they do well, then activate the option some have or extend by a year and try them out at a higher level next season. They can't be on much

Anthony Grant would disagree :winking:

Phil used about 2 or 3 to do that. Jack Bridge was scoring for fun in those games before being loaned out.

Doing what must be done to get the team promoted is mismanagement? Have a day off lol he give 2 kids a chance, he sees them everyday in training, Layne and Brown went on loan to teams quite a few steps down and didn't exactly set the world alight better to cut them off now and get someone in who can help the team in getting the side up this year.

Layne- The players I know who played with him last season were all a bit shocked when he signed for us, none of them saw a league player so I’m not surprised there.
Brown- Has pace to burn but nobody I know at Witham thought he was ready and had a lot of developing to do, it was mentioned that the pitches really didn’t suit his game though.
Farrell- Everyone at Witham liked him and I think they’d have him back, solid player and would have thought we’d have tried him at a higher level.
Banton- in his short time at Witham I don’t think he impressed, didn’t really get any positives back on him when I asked, just that he was a nice kid.
Clifford- Rate him highly, honestly think if we got rid of the rough edges and bad habits he would be our best player. Think it’s a massive mistake and think he will player at a higher level than any of the current midfield.

One point that I've seen mentioned elsewhere is where this leaves Barnard? I'm sure many would've expected him to be in a similar position to Clifford, unless PB wants to keep him and give him another chance when he returns from injury

I'm a bit late to the party on this thread so this may have already been covered but surely a chairman has to ask questions over the signings of Layne and Brown, both we paid a fee for and have collected wages to never kick a ball in anger for the club.

Yet another display of brainless, poor management!

Did we pay a fee for either? I thought Brown was being released by Charlton so we didn't? We took a chance of 2 kids probably being paid very small wages and they didn't make the cut, what is the big deal it happens in every team round the country all of the time?

I don't think they were on much as they were both signed for the development squad, I wouldn't have thought it was a high priced gamble. I think most of our previous managers have had one or two players like that, it's not uncommon. I'm sure we had a couple under Sturrock, can't think of the top of my head? We had Liptak under Tilly and i'm sure there was more.

Either way, do we really have money to literally flush down the toilet?

They cost peanuts and we took a chance, whats wrong with that?

How many times have people demanded we search non-league for talent, when he does and they prove to not be good enough he still gets slaughtered.

Every player at this level is a gamble, there is no player guaranteed to succeed.

Layne was specifically signed for the development squad, that was made clear when he joined.

Did we? How many minutes combined did they play for the first team? Some chance!

He took a low risk gamble, 2 kids on small money if they made the grade and played then it's a great move if it doesn't you get rid. If he signed a 30 year old striker instead of Brown and Layne on double their combined wages on a 2 year deal and he doesn't score/play you're in a much more difficult situation financially.

ahh what a shame some little boys never got their turn to play. This is beginning to look like a forum for Leigh Ramblers under 9s.
