Problem is the article it doesn't make it clear who is available for loan or who is available for transfer.

Hopefully only Clifford is available for transfer and the others on loan.

Jason Williams to conference level with Isaac Layne, Jack Bridge, Ellis Brown, Kane Farrell and Josh Banton to conference or conference south level.

I think you are reading it wrong. A club can either take them on a free transfer or have them on loan not just one option whereas Williams and Bridge just a loan

I don't think it matters. Its a Free transfer or they can go out on loan. The statement says either option is available to the 5 players without exception - so any of the 5 can go free or on loan!

It is pretty clear from the article that, loan or free transfer, the five lads won't play for SUFC again. If they can get another club now then great if not then we'll loan them to someone until their contracts are up to give them a chance to get some games in.

Williams and Bridge are the two 'loans' as we'd understand them (i.e. to get football with a view to developing them for Southend United).

Yeah it does sound like they are just trying to get rid of all 5.

Hmm I wonder if we under any "restrictions" at the moment, hence the cull?

But training and a match are two different things, I've read loads of football biographies that have talked about players who are terrible in training but when on the pitch are amazing.

Maybe but we're trying to win points and don't have the luxury of playing players who are crap in training on the off-chance that they become wizards on the pitch.

They have all had chances in training, in reserve matches and Brown & Layne have gone out on loan.

I'm surprised this wasn't mentioned earlier. Your always the sceptical one Smiffy, don't you know we are in the money now, soccer domes, O'Toole loan, Bolger transfer and Rons backing in the window. :winking:

How much combined do you think these five are on? £1-2k a week?

Seems more likely that the most obvious answer is the right one in this case, IMO.

Ahh of course.

Always easy to play this card admittedly. But perhaps we have hit the ceiling and need to shift a few before any can come in.

For sure. Perhaps a monetary and "limitations" exercise me thinks.

Yeah it does sound like they are just trying to get rid of all 5.

Would seem that way given that Brown said "I decided it was best to let them try and find a club now to help them progress their careers by going somewhere and playing, rather than wait until the summer, when significant numbers of players become free agents"

Well the theories are flying but in truth it is the release of five unnecessary players. Clifford might be the exception but PB does not want him and thats enough reason to see him gone. We have a big squad with too many fringe players that are unlikely to get a game under this regime.

"Our" finances? That's weird, this is a Southend United supporter's site and we're chatting about Southend United players and finances. You're not a Southend United supporter.

predictable for someone who has good opinions on here as you do, beefy. check my background as a supporter n contacts. would you have your interest in your club questioned ?? would you be enthralled about it

Yes I know,

But why bring him back from Chelmsford where he was scoring for fun and now ship him out to whoever wants him.JW Imo has been treated shabbily .
IMO he was brought back from Chelmsford as cover over a busy xmas period. Also so PB could give him more experience with the first team. Of which he did. Now he wants him to go out to a Conference premier club. The next level up to Conference south.

Sounds like a good idea to me. PB has obviously decided these 5 guys don't fit in with his requirements and it's better for all concerned if they try and find some competitive football, and hopefully a contract, now rather than when their contracts with us are up. If any of them sign for another club then they're off of our wage bill and no longer impacting on our Salary Cap.
As for the guys we've signed and let go without much coming of them; every manager does this including Sturrock and Tilson; let's not beat PB up for doing the same.

27 players if we're counting those with squad numbers as being involved with the first team, including loans, that's a big squad for League 2, especially with our finances and if Brown wants to add another 1 or 2 before the window shuts
