For PB, very similar overall. The difference is the level of experience between the 2 PB has more than twice the number of games.

i saw Roy Hollis and he was great ,him and Sam McCrory made a great strike force, have them in my top 10 anyday.

I saw Roy(spindlelegs) Hollis on a number of occasions, the first being the Cup game against Man City. Sammy McCrory was a legend as well...........91 goals in 205 appearances! I always remember cheering loudly when I saw on TV (black & white!), him scoring a decisive goal in his sole N Ireland appearance. NI registered an unlikely victory against England.... 3-2, if I remember correctly. Let's not forget another legend of that time, Kevin Baron, whose goal scoring record was none to mean..................

These are the scores on the doors for CP.

Hmmm..... let's hope he performs like he did at Charlton rather than how he did at Huddersfield!

This is the main problem I have with the criticism of Cox - not scoring enough goals. I do actually agree that maybe if he concentrated on staying a little further up the pitch then he’d get more chances. If you think of someone at a higher level, this same argument could be thrown at Wayne Rooney.

However my issue with this is that very few strikers in Leagues One and Two hit 20-25 goals a season. If they do then they’re very quickly snapped up by bigger clubs. Chances are that if they can score that many at that level then with a bit of coaching and playing with better players they’d likely get 10 in the Championship so a decent squad striker.

So if you do agree with the above then the few strikers that do score regularly at this level are going to be highly sort after and IMO often out of reach. So our next logical plan is to build a team (rather than a pair of strikers) who will score enough goals between them to compete. And if you can’t afford a striker that will score 20-25 goals a season then your next best plan is to fill your side with strikers that can create opportunities for others. And Simon Cox and Marc Antoine Fortune certainly did that. I agree that the strikers still need to carry some goal threat themselves and this is why I don’t have an issue with Fortune leaving. But I still feel Cox has goals in him, he just went through a dry spell last season which can happen to any player.

wise words these. I much prefer a team that shares the goals around as it means there are multiple threats rather than one. it's great having an Eastwood who can score out of nothing but I like having a hard working team where everyone can score and it's more about the team ethic. both is obviously the ideal but at this level spreading the goals is more realistic

Hmm..this thread seems to be fizzling out a bit..
By my calculations we need
1 CB
4 CM
1 RM
3 F

And this assumes Turner, Cox and Oxley stay

8 signings and 4 weeks before training starts. Given we like to get our business done early are we to expect a signing every couple of days from now? Normally we would at least be getting cryptic teasers from CP about who we are talking to and people "in the know" on here dropping a few hints?

Most players are on holiday at the moment, wouldn't expect much activity until much closer to training restarting

Except those going through as we speak, Gillingham have just announced 2 today for example.
Over the next 4 weeks I can understand- if as you expect not until training starts then rather than getting business done early its deja vu, groundhog day et al..

And the two they've signed I wouldn't was at Southend. We will be targeting players who will want to wait and see what options they have E.g. Lyle Taylor. Unfortunately we are never going to be a top players first choice and so we will have to wait to sign bigger names E.g. Cox, Kightly, Turner etc...

I don't see us ever being a club that's capable of doing our business early. More than happy to be proved wrong however!

In the not too distant past I used to enjoy close season transfer news as we (SUFC) seemed to retain the players we wanted and to have released, with grace, the players who didn't feature. The excitement was all about who we would bring in; NOT a worry for the POTY and star striker deciding we weren't good enough for them anymore.

I think LennySUFC has it right. PB never got business done early. SCP said he liked to get his business done early but maybe the realities of managing Southend vs Charlton are becoming clear.

Hence we should ignore the business being done early idea, not expect it or be surprised and upset as we once again are amongst the later clubs doing business. Maybe with SCP's arrival there is a new found patience and tempering of expectation- which is no bad thing either.

My guess would be 3 before training starts, 3 through July and a couple as the season starts - anyone expect different?

Agreed - I would expect to tap into the loan market more so than PB opted to last season given SCP previous experience with Spurs etc

Your calculations seem a bit off. Including Turner we have Turner, White, Kyprianou, Ferdinand and Kiernan. That’s five centre-halves, not including Coutts and Mitchell-Nelson(?) from the u23s. That’s more than enough bodies unless we manage to off-load Anton and Turner goes.

Similarly the RM will likely also play CM.

thats a strong presumption that we will ever see Kieran’s on a football field, something just doesn’t ring true with this one

I dont think it can be said we are late into the market yet as we were first away, something I cant remember happening for a long time. Also 10 clubs in the new league next year have not signed anyone yet, and that includes the 3 coming down and the going up !
9 clubs have signed one player so far just like us, so you could fiddle with stats and say we are tying 6th on the speedster front and:smile: it remains early days

However the breakaway leaders are Peterborough with 5 signings to date ( mostly freebies ) whilst Doncaster, Gills, Blackpool, and Rochdale have bagged two. We could tie second fastest if we snap up Lyle !!. tongue in cheek

Even coming up to January Ron did not want loanees coming in. Obviously CP got that policy reversed during his negotiations.
