Breaking News Retained/Released list - Wood and Waldron released

At least one of our strikers (hopefully more) need to be a goal scorer, tap ins, whatever. Need someone to be in the right place at the right time. We cannot carry anyone else that doesn't add to the goal tally, whatever their other attributes. Bonne can be released without cost.

Macauley Bonne is always going to be Marmite to the Southend faithful. His recent goal scoring record is not prolific, but he brings other attributes to the team which are very valuable in my view. If we can agree a contract money wise, then it's a no brainer for me, keep him. There is no doubt that Kev wants more goals from the team next season, we all do, so he will need to balance value to the squad with potential sparsity of goals.

The problem with your scenario of 'letting go' of Bonne & Walker mid-season is that it would likely cost money and/or require them to have another club lined up. Bonne we have the option of releasing at no cost now. And one would assume if he is released it's because the mgmt think/know they can bring better in.
This is the point- he has getting on for matching the career goals of our other three forwards combined!! If we were to let one go it wouldn’t be him but he is the one out of contract… if we have the £££ to bring in someone even better and by extension better than we already have fine/good. If it’s a gamble from the Ishmian League or someone who has never been prolific then less so….proven strikers who are at least the same level have to date been beyond our means..

NL and above
Hopper and Kendall never
Walker 22/23 in the NL
Bonne 21/22 in L1

If you mean 20+ goals a season striker then obviously only Bonne

Stop right there, I've heard enough. Give Hopper a 1.5 year contract! 😂

In all seriousness though, goal conversion rate shouldn't be the only attribute to go off. Goodship scored 77 goals in 97 games before he came to us!

I previously shared a more wholesale change to the squad but I think a few people were in disagreement. I've thought about the reality and reshaped with 352 as the core setup

To buy/loan in - 8
Keeper
Cd -tackle/fast/head/pass/organise - x2
Lwb / aml
Forward - hold up player
Striker X2
Mid playmaker/am

To go - 7
Goodlife - return
Hayes - sell
Miley - sell
Walker - sell
Bonne - no renew
Wood - out of contract
Waldron - out of contract

Keep 15
Crowther (sub rcb)
Gubbins (sub lcb)
Bridge (sub lwb)
Coker (sub mid)
Kendall (sub fwd)
Hopper (sub fwd)
Colin
Taylor
Ralph
Husin
Gus
Wind (sub rwb l Dr)
Parillion
Morton
Appiah forson

And keep kids if good enough

We need to improve on last season, and the main thing that needs to be better is goals scored. We have the chance to replace players who are not scoring for nothing now, why would we not take that chance?
Football is all about winning and losing, we didn't do enough winning last season as we didn't score the goals.
A very easy question to answer in my opinion.
It seems nice, kind, understanding bosses don't have the winning mentality...I don't think Fergie was that kind loving boss, that felt sorry for people, he just wanted to win at all costs.

For a club our size and financial clout, we need our small band of players to be performing week in week out. We can't carry players who we hope are going to turn a corner, we just don't have the money. With most saying we need an extra 30 points, we won't get that with our fingers crossed, we need a plan that has the chance of working. I will be really disappointed if we don't show some wotsits and go for it. And I don't mean those things that make everything orange

Bonne is a very good player. The roles he has had to fill would not have been the role we envisaged when bringing him in. I'm sure he would love to maraud through the middle alongside a TM but instead he has had to learn to be the TM or even a right winger. For me he looks best alongside Kendall and our game generally speeds up and improves when Bonne is on the pitch. He has shown commitment and a renewed hunger and I am sure we will see a lot more from him if retained. He clearly enjoys coaching/coaxing more from the less experienced lads. I hope he stays.
