Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1-0 Oldham Athletic

What a fantastic evening! North Bank rocking, early goal, clean sheet and a point off of the playoffs!

I was at the game but watched it back again this morning. Most of the top performers have been mentioned but I'll put a big shout out to Gus. Plenty on here have questioned his defending and have even suggested Wind should play ahead of him (trust me, it was said by more than a few). Since going to a back 4, he has looked very assured and has picked his moments to attack and stay back brilliantly (Eastleigh for example) but last night, he defended really well. His positioning was on point so often. I thought he really went under the radar in a positive way and that needs to be lauded. It also puts to bed some of the ridiculous comments that have been said about him. If said all along, enjoy him while we've got him.

Also, big shout out to Goodliffe, who has looked terrible to be fair. However, I thought he had a very composed game overall yesterday and to come back from Tuesday's game in positive fashion takes guts. I also thought Gubbins played well too in a position that isn't his, lovely cross in the first half.

KAF took the majority of the plaudits but Parillon is different gravy. Just imagine the player we will have on our hands with a proper preseason in his legs. Great to watch.

The biggest shout out goes to Kev. It would have been so easy to swap players around after Tuesday and bring in 'favourites' but he didn't. He kept that attacking midfield 3 and he has to be congratulated for that. Also, how nice is it to be able to bring on Miley, Coker and Bridge?! We've not had depth like that for years!

We are in with a big chance, come on you blues! 💙

What a great game. Brilliant atmosphere under the lights. We made one of the best sides in the division look toothless. KAF, what a terrier he is. From V Block West, we got a great view of the build up play for the goal - sublime.

I heard Hobson getting some stick. That seems a shame - he always gave his best for us.

Not against Harrogate he didn’t - that passage of play still gives me nightmares 😄😆

Pretty sure if I turned up to work and did one thing for an entire shift they would sack me for theft of hours.
I bet you don't have thousands watching you do your job and mo-aning*, groaning and telling you how **** you are at it when you don't perform.

I find it bizarre when people think being a footballer is analogous to their every day jobs.

*(sic) Word was being changed to 'discussing'. Is there a firewall thingy?

Kev got it spot on last night! He's proving me wrong recently and long may that continue. Playing 4 at the back made and kept it simple was perfect for Gubbins and Goodliffe (who was brilliant). LCP was causing them all sorts of problems especially first half and KAF now should be first name on the team sheet. He was everywhere! Playoffs are wide open now after some crazy sets of results in our favour over the last month.

"Oldham were a bit inclined to shove our players as they went for a header, which went largely unpunished"

I thought the shove in the back which KAF received as he rose to head the rebound for our goal resulted in his header being stronger and more accurate!

I’m quite hard on Noor, only as sometimes I feel he has more in the tank. I do see what he offers and why Kev picks him but also he has dropped off a little since last season. Then he is capable of one pass or one touch that can be absolute quality. I’d love him to add a few more shots on target to his game and sometimes think he’s maybe a tad cautious. But .. look we won and he helped in the build up to the goal .. so fair play Noor!

Thought that was one of his better performances this season, touches of the old silky skills.

That would assume you actually only did that one thing because someone lacking experience of the job only noticed that one thing and then told the world you did nothing else all shift.

Given the truth that he only did that one thing all night, I’m amazed he still managed to be part of last night’s dominant, winning side where every small percentage had an impact.

I’m more amazed how he’s continually pulled the wool over the eyes of his highly experienced boss, in training and in games.

Then there’s that team around him who clearly love a colleague who shirks their duties.

Then there’s all those other fans who actually think he does a lot of inconspicuous stuff in the background.

But what the hell are those guys smoking, huh!

This man is a master in deception - a true genius one might say.

(Personally, I just think we’re stronger with him in the side than without him. Best we’ve ever had? Not a chance. We’re national league FFS and for the most part they’re here for a reason. For me, Noor does the unappreciated (by some) dirty work that allows us to play, and gives Kev a bit of confidence to allow the more forward thinking players a level of protection. Every bit a part of last night’s clean sheet.)

A handful of chaps with the drummer started up an unheard of chant for Appiah Forson which struggled to gain momentum in the BV, but they persevered behind me until the whole section was singing it, it carried on for a few mins and then AF, the pocket rocket, scores right in front of us ! Couldnt have scripted it any better

Haters isnt the right word. Most people just like their strikers to score goals and not miss sitters every week.

He's bringing more to the table now though which is good.
Yes, it's not a matter of 'Haters' 'seeing the light' When he arrived he was understandably out of condition but he has obviously worked very hard to regain full fitness and is now an integral, probably indispensable, part of the team. However, one aspect of his play that still has room for improvement is his finishing, which is still not up to par. Given that his preferred partner up front, Hopper, is also hardly a prolific scorer this is a worry over the last few games where goalscoring assumes even greater importance in the play off race.

A pulsating game full of endeavour and determination to secure the 3 points. Thought we were significantly the better team first half and bossed midfield. Second half Oldham got tighter and made it a relief when the final whistle blew. Pleased to get a rare clean sheet and on reflection Hayes had a relatively comfortable afternoon. This shows how well the defence played and protected him. Like the blend in midfield, Husin does the unseen off the ball work, KAF full of running and energy, Morton sits and gets us moving, LCP that tricky ball player that we have missed this season. Bonne & Hopper ran themselves into the ground, everybody including subs contributed to keep our season alive.

Hayes 7
GSM 7
Taylor 7.5
Goodliffe 8
Gubbins 7.5
KAF 8.5 MOTM
Morton 7
Husin 7
LCP 8
Bonne 8
Hopper 7.5

Miley 6.5
Ralph 6.5
Bridge 6
Coker 6

KAF gets my MOTM, absolute pest to Oldham, would not let them settle and the winning goal. Oldham, for me, now look nailed on for fourth. Did expect their wing backs to give us more trouble as they are good players. Also was worried when Fondup came on as he likes to throw his weight around and he did but faded. Normally gets his head on crosses but did not really provide the goal threat I expected. Kudos to Ben Goodliffe who had his best game for us and nullified their threat. Roll on Saturday and expect a raucous away end at Sutton, I shall be in the main stand trying to be respectful to our hosts 😃 UTB
So pleased to see Ben Goodliffe getting the praise, he is very good at what he does, very little pace but a threat up front and a tough uncompromising defender at the back, he will run through brick walls for the team, hence all his injuries!
