Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1-0 Oldham Athletic

What a win, what a performance, what an atmosphere!

Still extremely happy even days after the game, amazing how happy football can make you when things are going well.

Leon and Keenan with outstanding performances! Defensively we looked solid as a rock and Hayes fills me with confidence.

If you have to moan about something its that we didn't score the goals our play deserved. Some excellent passing football going on and some great chances created, we just lack the finishing.

Good to see you happy Matty !

Exactly. The reason Noor is a 'favourite' is because even when he is not having the best of games, off the ball he is one of the best we have. His intelligence in cutting off passing lanes and knowing where to be in midfield to nullify the opposition is stuff fans rarely notice but is vital if you want to win football matches.

If we are going to carry on with this system and let Parillon do his thing, you need off the ball grafters like Noor.
Agreed. Same with Miley.

Spot on as ever, Jai.

Spot on as ever, Jai.
He definitely has been played for that reason - he's dependable - and of late this has allowed for KAF and Leon to make forward runs. I just used to love him in and around the box and trying stuff like the superb volley vs Solihull Moors. That Noor hasn't popped up so much but then .. he's been helping the team overall. It's always the spectacular goals or the spectacular saves which get remembered I suppose. There's a misconception sometimes that certain players don't do much - in reality they are doing things but not things which will grab the headlines.

No wonder you didn't get a penalty........refering to Kirsty Dowle as 'he!':Winking: Seriously though, we had very strong claim for a penalty at the start of the second-half which wasn't given, so I suppose that levelled itself up. Even without a result on Saturday, you'll be in the play-offs. Without a win, our chances of getting there would have been seriously reduced.

Having his say - on loan Southend United defender Ben Goodliffe (Image: Lucy Copsey)

By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

SOUTHEND United defender Ben Goodliffe remains unsure if Oldham Athletic should have been awarded a penalty against the Shrimpers.

The Latics were left fuming when a penalty was not awarded after Mike Fondop's header struck the outstretched arm of Goodliffe.

But the defender admitted he knew very little about what happened.

"On the pitch when you’re in that moment, for me it’s just a case of trying to put my head where it hurts to clear the ball," explained Goodliffe.

"I didn’t know much about it and it’s at close proximity too.

"I didn’t know much about it at the time but it probably looks worse than maybe it was.

"Some people might say we got lucky but in some of the games we’ve had recently we haven’t been on the end of that luck.

"We haven’t had the luck we’ve deserved in some games so it all cancels each other in past games and future games too.

"Maybe we got away with one, maybe we didn’t but only the ref can make that decision."

Almost certainly because hardly anyone made runs into the penalty area. Provided we keep playing with LCP and KA F that could well change before the season is finished.
It needs to change in my opinion if we are to be more productive next season.

We are too heavy on the crosses into the box v driving runs into the box.

As you say with KAF, LCP and hopefully some similar additions over the summer, fingers crossed we can see more bums off seats LCP/KAF type driving runs into the box.

Under the rules prior to the "hands in an unnatural position etc" malarkey, that couldn't have been a penalty because, if Goodliffe is to be believed, he didn't touch it deliberately. The new rules are ridiculous. Just leave it to the ref. If he thinks the player handled deliberately, then it's a penalty.

Football is a fast-moving game and I doubt there are many occasions when players "deliberately" handle in the penalty. On the other hand, nowadays, I suspect more penalties are awarded when there is no intent to handle. It's beginning to look like "sticks" in hockey.

Rant over.
