Post-Match Thread and Ratings Eastleigh 1-2 Southend United

Being strategically flexible is wonderful... But that shift to 352 (where bridge is not a lwb) just put more pressure on the team.

The errors seem to stem from that as we welcome more pressure and end up passing backwards.

I have no idea what Maher thinks of course but it appears that it's a mindset to protect rather than go win. I can understand it but it so often invites more pressure.

Same issue as always we end up passing backwards and sideways and with the quality of player we end up making more mistakes enabling teams to get back into the game

We started with a sort of 4312 formation today.l packing the midfield. The width mostly coming from Gus.

Thank goodness we are targeting a back 4 now. Massive difference and gus still scores.

I do wish we would continue with the 433 though and try and put the game out of sight. Yes we might be a little more susceptible at the back, but it would be great if we went fro the jugular and try and win the game rather than sit back.

Maher really is so risk averse but great to see the team making results progress albeit not ripping up the league - which I do believe we could do with these players and the right approach.

Spot on. To be fair to KM he has made a decision re subs and we win the game. However, our recent success has been mainly down to having two midfielders who both run at defences KAP and LP. I feel that he should have kept at least one on when making the change. When we rely on Husin, Bridge, Moreton and Miley the attacking and goal threat mainly ends. It could have cost us yesterday. If you are having success playing a certain way why change it.

One could argue it wasn't working second half and needed to be changed - hell one poster yesterday wanted changes at half time!

Haters are going to hate. We won FFS.
If I was a hater you'd be spot on. But I'm not. I'm just giving my opinion on something that I watched. Just like I did when against Rochdale away last season I praised Maher for charging it up during the match when we were getting over ran in the first half.

What nearly cost us was bad individual errors. Nothing to do with tactics, formation, half time team talks or Maher.

Like many others on here I have criticised Kev and could still find faults if I wanted too. But after 5 years of misery I’m more than happy to enjoy this run and take what the football gods give us…. In fact so happy I’ll buy you a beer at Wembley in 2 months time.
I'll make my presence known at the bar. If there are any pre-Wembley activities I may take you up on your offer before that. You'll recognise my face..😉

i tend to feel that those who call people haters need to reflect on it as using the term suggests they themselves might better fit the rotten stereotype

JJ Moons on Wembley High Road. It’s hardly exotic, but it does the job.

I avoid NW London where possible. Not just Wembley but as we know from trips to Barnet, Wealdstone and Boring Wood. It’s impossible to have a memorable session in that part of the world.

Let’s enjoy the May sunshine in places like Greenwich, Borough Market or Camden…. In 2015 we spent the morning around Baker Street. Even Farringdon, Marylebone, Waterloo and Victoria are much better.

I better stop now otherwise I might trigger one of the Victors into running for their miserable space.

Probably, we are starting to play how Maher wants the team to play. That first half was a really good team display.

Hayes pulled off a ridiculous save that he had no right to get to.

Parillon will be a top player but his error led to us nearly drawing a game we should have won at a canter. He will learn though. His class is there to see.

GSM. Can we hold on to him in the summer?

What worries me is that the players coming on seemed to weaken us.

Bridgey has been off it for ages and is defensively poor.

Walker should have the legs to run at defenders and close them down for the last 30 mins but seemed disinterested and kendall would have been far more aggressive.

Miley was Miley, so I can understand that one.

Goodliff gave extra physical presence when we were getting overrun.

Whatever happens this season, we still need better options off of the bench.

Having read through some of the enlightening comments on here, I can see it now...

In his pre-match talk, Maher tells the players not to attack. 'Listen,' he says, 'you know my tactics by now. I want to see plenty of negative football. We'd have won the title by now if we'd drawn every game like I wanted us to. Keens, Morts, you need to get the ball sideways more often, like I did in my career.' Maher thinks back to his own unsuccessful playing days, how he only got picked because he was 'Tilly's son'. 'Look, Leons,' he says, 'remember what I've told you in training. I brought you in so you wouldn't attack. If the backwards pass is on, you take it. I want you to go out there and not express yourself.'

In his half time talk, Maher is furious. ‘Two bloody nil.’ He insists they revert to type. ‘Listen,’ he says, ‘why take one touch when you can take five? We’ve got to do the simple things badly. Gubbs, Golds, I want you to knock it about at the back a bit more often, invite some pressure.’ He decides to go 5-3-2, just to demonstrate his tactical naivety. Maybe he’ll bring on a few of his half-fit old favourites to really sabotage things (ones who were mistakenly voted player of the season not so long ago). The Shrimpers come out for the second half, fired up for the draw. The full-time whistle is a disappointment. For me, anyway. I’m going to have to be really creative to turn that result into a negative.

But I see it. I really do. We got more goals than the opposition, but morally we didn’t win. We moved within one point of the playoff positions, but philosophically we’ve fallen several places. My weekend is back on track. I can enjoy my half empty can of Foster's.

There is only one point that I would take issue with and that is how anyone could conceivably "enjoy" a can of Fosters, half empty or not.
