Post-Match Thread and Ratings Eastleigh 1-2 Southend United

T
I'm fully aware that Southend gave a game on Tuesday. So prior to making belittling remarks don't assume that I'm a part time Blues fan. Those substitutions were not made due to Tuesday's game. The Eastleigh manager had outsmarted Maher with his half time substitutions and tactics and Maher felt it was best to remove LCP & KAF and defend deep after it went to 2-1. It nearly cost us.

What nearly cost us was bad individual errors. Nothing to do with tactics, formation, half time team talks or Maher.

Like many others on here I have criticised Kev and could still find faults if I wanted too. But after 5 years of misery I’m more than happy to enjoy this run and take what the football gods give us…. In fact so happy I’ll buy you a beer at Wembley in 2 months time.

I’ll take 3 points anytime,
1st half played them off of the park………imo we totally took our foot off of the throttle in the 2nd
Subs 🤔, a lot of us thought Kendall not Walker
I really struggled with the last 10 mins, I get possession football, but please run to the corner and hold it up rather than play backwards and sideways- so open to an error .

Great noise from the travelling fans, not sure if it was wise not to open the terrace, the aisles were jammed top to bottom

You’ll be lucky to get a genuine pint at Wembley mate. Cans of Budweiser last time I was there.

Still, will be happy to share one (or several) with you G 🍻

Probably the most important win of the season that First half was outstanding and we out played them second half was always gonna be a different game and showed character to hang on at the end thought hopper was our most important player cleared every corner worked his socks off and got his goal and we’ve finally found someone that can do the cardwell role

Sometimes in slow motion:Winking:

This is absolutely correct. Maher reverted to type with the old faithfuls on the pitch in the second half towards the end handing the initiative to Eastleigh. Any spark of creativity was withdrawn and we reverted to the sideways and backwards mode, which didn't even have the dubious merit of retaining possession as we kept giving the ball away and were lucky to get the 3 points in the end after a totally dominant first half which with creative players like Parillon, A-F and GSM seeing so much of the ball was a joy to watch.
Put a sock in it please, we all know you don’t rate Maher but as good as he is attack wise, Parillon cost us a goal today (and arguably last week too), by giving the ball away cheaply. The subs makes sense to me to see the game out, if we ended up drawing by all means moan, but we got the 3 points today.

I’ve been critical of Maher at several times this season too to be fair. But I have worked out that our average points per game in the second half of the season so far would have given 88 points if replicated from the start. If we can maintain that recent form into next season we should be right up at the top next year.

We won't be going to Wemberlee again (this season) so you can save your cash.

Yes, I was really thinking somewhere far more exciting on the way.

A deserved win but one we made a lot harder than it needed to be. First half was as dominant as we’ve played this season. We were in total control and deserved the half time lead. Eastleigh were more front foot at the start of the second half but their goal came from us attacking and Leon playing a dreadful pass back to Gubbins and they broke away to score. We then dropped deep and invited the pressure with Hayes once again making a crucial save, they had a few shots go close before hitting the post with a deflected effort. Bonne twice and Hopper wasted massive chances to increase the lead. In the end we stood firm and for me that’s one of the biggest results of the season

A few points
Fans today were absolutely top draw, best away end this season for me, complete contrast to last week
Didn’t agree with all the subs. Cav was right and did well but would have been for Husin rather than Leon albeit Leon was a bit off it but did do well for the Gus goal
Walker for Bonne was an odd one, not taking Bonne off but surely Kendall offers more than Walker in work rate alone
Goodliffe was right and added some heading ability late on
Bridge, oh dear, oh dear. Just take your man on FFS. Why we didn’t look at a new LB or LWB is baffling. Ralph again injured and our only options are Bridge or Gubbins

But crucially we are now at the time of the season where results matter. I said in the car that 7 pts this week would be a good return. Boston next and we should be looking to get 3 pts and then a huge game Saturday against a tough Oldham team. But we are in with a chance and after the dreadful performance at Maidenhead I’d take this now

MOM I’d give to Hopper with Morton again impressing and another assist closely behind
Taylor, Golding, Hayes, Gus who also impressed and Bonne put in a good shift

You can't slag off Bridge I've been told😵‍💫

Well done to the 792 that travelled. Massive effort from the stands in the second half, sadly not matched by the team.

Great to hang on and get the result. But we really have to sharpen up the passing, it was simply awful in the second half, with glaring errors from Husin, Golding, Gubbins, and Bridge to name but a few.

On the positive, Hayes kept us in it, that save was as good as a goal, superb and the defending of balls played in our box was much better than in recent weeks.

We need to be on it for the whole 90 minutes and cut the sloppy stuff out.

Rochdale only drew, Gateshead lost again.

If Barnet can do the biz at Altrincham, we will settle into 8th place and hopefully kick on on Tuesday.

UTB
Spot on and it was a sloppy LCP pass to Gubbins that missed him and continued on to set up the break from which Eastleigh scored. How do we end up hanging on when we were sooo good in the first half? It was a great three points and we deserved the win overall, just, but we're getting a bit saddle sore from riding our luck!!
