Breaking News Shaun Hobson joins Oldham

I've followed this team for over 30 years. Hobson is an asset at this level, but in no way is he a player who is impossible to replace. We've had much much better. (And some worse).
I've been a supporer since the early 60's.

While I'd agree that Hobson is "an assset at this level" and also that he is not "impossible to replace" The latter strikes me as being rather difficult if not impossible while we're under an emargo. :Winking:

But that equally applies to Hobson - we couldn't renew his contract whilst under the embargo - we're in no different a situation

Yeah a real Catch 22 situation -especially as he was aparently after a move back North anyway.

Look out for more to follow unless this takeover deal gets done soon.

Very true. Which is why getting decent new ownership is the priority - not worrying about a few players exiting the building. Once we've solved the bigger issue, recruitment will take care of itself.

How many are left that are out of contract - Bridge, Ralph, JD.....?
Brigde will go if someone wants him badly enough I'm sure.Ralph has an awful injury record which will scare a lot of people off.JD's apparently looking for a coaching role.

I'm sorry but I don't see the value JD provides.

I don't see him as a leader, or inspiring model. Thanks for your service, but time to move on.

So max 3 more players to leave? of which JD is probably expected, Ralph is a good player, but injury prone. Bridge is probably the only one where there is no question mark of if we should attempt to retain.

So overall the exodus of players so far has been relatively welcome.

That of course remains to be seen.

How many times over the years has someone posted similar thoughts? If we had given a coaching role to every half decent player who was coming to the end of their playing career at Roots Hall our back room team would have easily been in the hundreds!
But you do not do it to every half decent player do you. JD had given 7 years service as player and captain. How would that equate to hundreds????

Except JD actually has an interest in being a coach, and was even interim manager for a game after PB got sacked last year.

He still has something to offer on the playing side, both in the dressing room and as a backup option on the pitch. A player/coach role would make perfect sense for all parties.

It’s funny how for a significant part of those 7 years (from Powell until Maher) it was widely considered that we lacked leadership as we plummeted down the leagues but now he’s out of the team his leadership is considered such an asset that we need to create a new role.

FWIW I actually expect there will be a fair few vacancies in what’s left of the academy by the time the takeover happens. That’s the route both Tilly and Maher took onto becoming much loved Southend managers.
