Pre-Match Thread Wycombe Wanderers V Southend United

Fancy a 2-2 draw today , We need pace at creativity on the pitch to try and catch them on the break , like everyone else I can see the beast scoring a token scrappy goal against us !

Names out of a hat I reckon. Unless you’re a striker in which case your name won’t be in the hat.

No room for goal scorers in Bond’s 6-4-0 formation.

Who would you play on the wings in a 442?

That’s the problem isn’t it? And it’s got me thinking... When we all talk about 4-4-2 I think the main reason it’s liked so much is that it is understood so well by all of us in the stands. We know what the roles are in that system and it feels like that’s the basis of football since the playground and back to the dawn of time... but it isn’t of course. KB has taken a big risk making such wholesale changes, if you ask me. It’s not that there’s necessarily anything wrong with his plans it’s just that history is littered with brave but ultimately failed revolutionary projects that ran out of time to succeed. In a business like football, you need to at least maintain reasonable form as you go through the process of implementing your plans. I think what I’m getting at is that KB seems to me to be in huge danger of seeing his plans strangled at birth by our League form, because he chose revolution rather than a less risky evolution.

I agree Spaceman. I’m torn between thinking Bond given a little more time might see us playing the kind of football we crave versus we need to go back to basics as soon as possible. I guess that’s the dilemma Ron has.

Who would you play on the wings in a 442?
Ndukuwu on the left and Hutchinson on the right. In that scenario it would be a tilted midfield four that Brown and Tilly played (Atkinson and Pettefer respectively) mostly successfully. Milligan and Hamilton in the middle. Harsh on Mantom as I rate him but he is another option.

Mind you, I'd tweak it to 4-2-3-1 with Cox * dropping deep behind Humphrys.

* If Cox is fit that is. Otherwise Goodship.

That’s exactly why I suggested 5-2-1-2 with Ralph and Elvis as wing backs. Normally I would want us to stick with 4-4-2 but I’m not convinced Hutchinson is a winger and with Macca so out of form, it leaves Ndukwu as our only option.

If Demetriou is ready to start then I’d be tempted to put him or Elvis at right midfield and the other at right back, with Ndukwu on the left in a 4-4-2. If he’s not though then I’d go 5-2-1-2.
