Wrestling

Can someone explain to me why intellegent(!) people would watch this fake American dross? It's not a sport in any way shape or form. It more choreographed than High School Musical with artificially pumped up bad "actors".

I just don't understand why anyone over the age of 11 would watch it!

Wrestling afficianados, please explain, cos I'd rather watch paint dry.

for someone so liberal (apparently)... you don't half like slating things that you don't like (but millions do)

Yeah maybe, but I see it in a new light since Beefy hit the nail on the head with his reasons - while I'd rather watch a foreign film, he'd probably want to watch wrestling...but they're both false in their own way.

I'll quite happily admit to watching it. I can't see anything wrong, so long as you're not sitting there believing it's real.

Personally, I can't see much difference between me watching Wrestling and the Mrs watching Eastenders (except there's probably more fighting and swearing in her program :D )

I've never understood the arguement that people shouldn't watch it because it's fake. Well so are 99% of things on TV.

Yes but they arent sports :)

Its not like you watch Eastenders wondering who is going to win !

Thats what I dont get, I dont see the point in a "competitive sport" where the decision is already made. If I wanted that Id watch a Bruce Grobelaar match :)

When it changed from WWF to WWE, It was all over!

Yeah that was terrrible. They seemed to give up on wanting to save pandas and just concentrate on the wrestling side of the business.

They haven't called it a sport in more than a decade though. They market it as Sports Entertainment nowadays.

Is it not better to watch a 'sport' (if that's what you want to call it) where the participants are trying to entertain the crowd rather than one where winning is everything? You could argue that football would be a lot more entertaining if the results were predetermined and everything happened to further a storyline.

How much better would the cup final have been yesterday had, in the 90th minute with the scores at 1-1, Dimitar Berbatov smashed the ball into his own net then ripped off his Spurs top to reveal a Chelsea shirt underneath? Then he starts hugging Frank Lampard & John Terry in front of the enraged Spurs support as the rest of the shocked Tottenham players get smashed around the head with steel chairs!

That's wrestling.

Yep I admit theres certainly not enough chair wacking at football matches.

Well outside of Millwall anyway.

People who dislike it or think it's dross are always the uptight ones who slam it for not really being a 'sport'. Well no, it's not a sport......it has been marketed, as Beefy says, as 'sports entertainment', and if you can watch it knowing it's fake and predetermined, which I figured out by myself when I was 9, then you should be able to loosen up and enjoy it as entertainment.

The finishes and the 'high-spots' in a match are pre-determined. Everything else in the match, especially mat wrestling and individual moves, are done 'off-the-cuff'. Whenever you see wrestlers' lips moving in the middle of a match but cannot hear what they are saying, they are telling each other what they're going to do next, and I think that respect should be paid for off-the-cuff innovation like that.

Plus, people say it's not a real sport, but I'd give those wrestlers more respect than I'd give most footballers for the way they put their bodies on the line. Serious injuries in football are rare, it's mostly the odd pull or sprain.....torn quadriceps, torn biceps, broken necks, broken backs and other serious injuries that require 6-12 month layoffs are comonplace in wrestling. Kudos to those performers who put their bodies on the line like that, whether it's real or not.

It's not as good as it used to be.....not as many memorable characters, storylines nowhere near as good. However, i can still admit to watching RAW every now and again when I'm at home and have Sky Sports to watch. I can do that because I sit there with an open mind, knowing and not caring that it's 'fake', and being able to enjoy a bit of entertainment because of that. As has been said, it's no more fake than soaps and films.....
