Wrestlemania XX

Quote[/b] (Matty the Shrimper @ Mar. 11 2004,19:02)]According to my mate who is the absoloute don on wrestling he thinks that Lesnar going to play NFL thing is just a work. He never played College Football and the WWE do like to keep the smarks (wrestling analysts) on their toes.
I'm a mod on the boards of one of the big WWE fan sites(Rajahwwf.com), and loads of people there are speculating that its a work but I really can't see it myself. I'll give full props to Vinnie Mac if it is but I don't think its likely.

Apparently a few NFL teams tried to sign Brock when he was in the NCAA's wrestling so he must have some potential even if he is now a few years older. Football isn't like soccer anyway in that its so much more about physical ability than it is about actual skill. If he doesn't want to wrestle any more and wants to give this a try then fair play to him imo.

the FRONTIER WRESTLING ALLIANCE (<a href="www.frontierwrestling.com" target="_blank">www.frontierwrestling.com</a>) is a southern based wrestling promotion featuring on the new WRESTLING CHANNEL (<a href="www.thewrestlingchannel.tv" target="_blank">TWC</a>)
Personally im not a huge fan of the FWA product, bit too WWE copied, but you mike like it, give it a try.

Also other promotions from all over the world will be shown, which might offer an healthy alternative to the WWE.

Check monday for the new channel on sky channel 432

A uni mate of mine wrestles for FWA. I've not seen much of it to be honest, but I've been fairly impressed with what I've seen when I caught it on Friendly TV in December.

I haven't seen it properly for a while but I'll have to remember to shove a 4hr tape in Sunday night.

Bit miffed if Brock and Goldberg really are moving on from the
WWE, I was hoping they could have got a bit more mileage out of this feud.

Quite chuffed Guerrero is getting a big push these days as I followed his stuff form when I used to get ECW tapes in the mid 90s.

A lot of the old names from my youth seemed to have passed on, there is even a slightly morbid website out there where you can pick out 4 you think might snuff it this year - Jake the Snake is a big favourite to go this year as he is a crack addict and an alchoholic. Although it is quite obviously staged the wrestlers do still pick up a lot of bumps and bruises on the way and because of the intensive touring a lot end up addicted to painkillers as a result, throw steroid abuse into the mix and this is why we have seen so many big name deaths in the last few years.

I highly recommend the docu-pic Beyond the Mat and Mick Foleys book "Have a Nice Day" - oh and The Rocks new movie with Seann William Scott (Stiffler) is really good as well.

I'm keeping an eye out for the Wrestling Channel, I saw some of the previews they ran and was very impressed with Ring of Honor and some of the FWA stuff I saw. Pro-Wrestling NOAH from Japan is cool but the style is a lot more slow and gradual compared to the WWE but they work a lot lot stiffer (hit each other a lot harder)

Wrestlemania looks like being a 5 hour show this year Kenny so make sure your tape is long enough

aaaaaaaaagh! right 3hr tape on Long Play it is then!

I can't see SCSA making a full time return with the way his neck is, he can barely muster the energy for the old KICK-BAM!!-STUNNER. Is the Rock back full time now after his Hollywood exploits? It will hurt Vince bad losing Brock and Goldberg in one foul swoop but I'm sure theres plenty of young upstarts being groomed as replacements.....either that or Vince is bringing back the Orange Goblin (Hogan) again to put bums on seats.

I reckon Austin will wrestle once or twice more somewhere down the line. Until then it looks like it'll just be a stunner here or there from him. Expect to see many of them on sunday. Actually, with Lesnar and Goldberg both now leaving it wouldn't surprise me to see Austin get added and the match made a triple threat on Smackdown tonight. Austin can go down early, leave the other two to do all the work then get up, stunner them both and get the win. Thats probably how I'd book it anyway.

Rock sadly isn't back full time and won't be any time soon. In fact Wrestlemania is schedualed to be the only date he's going to work in 2004

Fair play to the guy that he wants to make movies and I'm grateful that he shows up from time to time, but you've got to miss him when he's not around. He's the most entertaining guy in the company by far.

Whos this then?

The Duke of Danger. Was in the tag division for a while, not sure what he's doing there right now though. We're on different courses this year and I haven't seen him much. Top lad though.

Just been trying to dig round for more info about Brock. Quite a few people think it's a false leak started by Vince to keep peoples interest in that match high. If it was just Goldberg who was leaving everyone would expect Lesnar to job Goldberg but this "Brock going to NFL" story has got people talking about the match again.

I think a lot of internet fans are overstating their importance if they think that the WWE would do this to throw them. He's really quitting and people should just accept it.

Personally, I'd say it's more ignorant of wrestling companies to believe that people won't laugh at punches and kicks being missed by more distance than a Southend penalty.

Fans - and non-fans - know what they're getting. It doesn't make it any less funny to see such hammy acting.

In fact, it's pretty ignorant to say people are ignorant when they're not ignorant of the fact that there's no ignorance of it.

Like I said, though, they give the audience what they want.

Playboy match as well!!

Bets on it being right in the middle to keep the viewers watching!? Bastards!!

Is this new channel available to all and sundry, or do you have to the top package?!

Ok, I give in... I've been following the thread, but resisted from posting - closet wrestling fan too

Once Kenny posted, all bets were off

I watched wrestling from the EARLY days when it was 1hr tucked away once a week on ITV about 3am. Then my aunt got BSB Cable and used to tape WWF Superstars for me!

Followed it really closely until about a year or two ago, now i only catch it my accident e.g. I caught Smackdown Saturday and just laughed when I saw Guerrero was the current champ! How did that happen!?

I will now tape WM XX though - is it on PPV or SS1/SSExtra?

Who is your favourite female? I still love Stephanie, fooking lovely!

Oh and good shout Kenny, I imported Beyond the Mat a few years ago on DVD, brilliant Documentary and a great insight if you are a wrestling fan. Also got the two Mick Foley books and they are also a good behind the scenes read.

I also totally embarrassed my wife when we went to New York about 4 years ago. We went into FAO Schwartz (the toy store in the film Big!) and I brought a toy wrestling ring for the action figures (not to actually play with, just for the fact that it was American and at the time you couldnt buy anything like that over here *ahem*) and when we got back to the hotel I set it up - trouble is, it wouldnt come apart again and we had to wrap it in brown paper with the ring posts sticking through and put it through JFK Airport as luggage!!!

Anyway, enough of this nonsense...

Paul

Wow, never thought that there were so many wrestle-fans out there. Fair play to you folks; it's totally not my cup of tea, but to each his or her own...

Can't believe there are no other closet sumo fans out there, though...

I hear Elton John is a big wrestling fan.

But hey, I'm not going to knock anything that keeps the under-educated off the streets.

I don't know what Fed you watched, whether it was WWF, wCw or WWA when they came over here or just one of the small indie feds, but the "hammy acting" from the top guys really isn't too bad. In fact a lot of what goes on is probably a lot more real than you think.

Mick Foley tells a funny story in his autobiography about the night that he had his ear ripped off in a wCw match in Germany. He went to hospital with what was left of his ear in a bag and he tells how the nurse binned his ear in front of him and then made a comment about how wrestling was fake.

Quite a few wrestlers have a reputation of working 'stiff' which basically means that they really hit their opponents. You should read Mick Foley in his autobiography talk about the beatings he used to take at the hands of Vader for example. Bradshaw, Hardcore Holly and a hadful of other current wrestlers work the same style but most frown upon it for the understandable reason that its not very professional to legitimately hurt a guy who is supposed to be working with you.

Wrestlers take a hell of a lot of punishment. They don't have stunt doubles so when someone like Foley gets thrown off of a 20ft steel cage through an announce table in front of a life audience, its going to hurt. And those chair that they hit eachother with with are genuine steel chairs too.

I've been offered the chance to train to be a wrestler but theres no money in it, especially not in this country, and I didn't fancy the idea of having ther cr*p kicked out of me a few times a week and then be told it's fake.

I remember when he talked about that in an ECW interview - he said something like he lost the ear because he didn't know the German phrase for "Can you put that in some femalda-hyde (sp?) for me?"

Of course most of you will take the **** that a 25 year old is still watching this cr*p but I don't care... I'm used to it. Besides, we're all allowed our escapes. Although I don't technically still watch it other than the main-events which still take my fancy.

The card for anyone interested is:

Eddie Guerrero © vs Kurt Angle for the WWE Championship

Triple H © vs Chris Benoit vs Shawn Michaels for the World Championship

Brock Lesnar vs Goldberg

The Undertaker vs Kane

The Rock & Mick Foley vs Ric Flair, Batista & Randy Orton

Chris Jericho vs Christian

Half a dozen others as well, but seeing as I've not seen any WWE television in months I'm not sure who... Five hour event so I'm expecting something pretty spectacular.

Cue abuse

Going back to your original post, You should have taken an absolute hammering for that but instead opened up a debate.

I also watched WWF in my early teens and enjoyed it, i have since flicked over whilst pushing the sky buttons and couldnt beleive how sh*t it looked, and at 25 you should know better.
