Worst defeat following SUFC

In terms of matches I’ve seen live, our 2-0 defeat at home to Boston under Wignall was the worst. I’ve never seen a team with decent players look so clueless. And Boston were a really poor side. An attendance lower than 3,000 as well.

Those who have mentioned the MK Dons away game is up there for me too. I was off work for several days after that. Dreadful performance and had to bite my tongue when their fans laughed at us on the train.

Thankfully I lived in Watford at the time so the journey was short.

Some of the FA cup exits over the past 25 or so seasons have been truly embarrassing

Brighton away and we lost 9-1!
Mel Slack scored our one and only.
Thought we might get a draw but we were already 6-0 down.
Miserable coach trip home

Same for me. One of my early away matches on the Eastern National coach.

Brighton actually scored a tenth with a Charlie Livesey shot coming out of the goal off of a stanchion unnoticed by the referee.

We had major injury issues. Derek Woodley played at centre forward and Ray White kept goal (after a fashion). Poor replacements for Eddie Firmani and Ian McKechnie. Additionally Ray Smith was out and replaced by young Chris Barnard. Our goal was the best of the game.

Our first ever relegation season.

For a bit of context as why this result was so awful - apart from the obvious. We went into the game above Brighton who were in a relegation spot and their next match was a FA Cup tie at home to Bedford, with Brighton going out after a replay.

For sheer awfulness, probably Scarborough away in the FA cup replay. Midweek, bloody long way, cold, terrible performance. A real ‘why did I bother’ game.

For disappointment - maybe the draw away to Grimsby which meant we missed out on automatic promotion (and the misinformation of scores elsewhere in the pre-smartphone days adding to angst). Good turn out and would have been a great occasion had we won. Thankfully it was short lived as we managed to go up through the play offs.

Just checked as I was sure Maher played in the game - The team for that Scarborough debacle was actually fairly decent - Flahavan, Jupp, Cort, Hunt, Stuart, Gower (Steven Clark 87), Smith, Maher, Jenkins (Kightly 89), Bramble (Corbett 86), Constantine.

Maidenhead away this season, not because it was a big score but felt that could of quickly become a turning point between the players and the fans, for a couple of seasons we was together but that was the first game I remember the players getting stick at the end of the game, luckily it turned for the better after that and we went on a bit of a run, I think if we'd lost the game after we would be at a completely different place today.

1992 Derby County 7-0. 2nd leg of a league cup tie. We went there leading 1-0 from the 1st leg. 1st taste of defeat for my young son 😞

Blimey how on earth do you remember those things,
I can’t remember what I had for breakfast. Oh wait I haven’t had it yet
