Note condoning this in any way but I can see how technically it was brought about.

By calling her a bitch, he was Harrassing her, English was a reference (albeit incorrect) to her race . The "English " reference was intended to increase the "venom" of the bitch insult therefore it was technically a Racially aggrevated harrassment.

In a way , the number of people of have denegrated the offensiveness of phrases like "Black Bas**ard" by saying things like "if he called me an english bas**rd would that be racist" have sort of forced their hand a bit

But 10 weeks in jail and a 12 month suspended sentence for that?

The demand for these workers wouldnt be as high, because the population would have been a lot smaller. As for poncing off the state, well their benefit should be stopped, but the way you say it seems to suggest onlt British people ponce off the state. Call me old fashioned but there may be one or two of the immigrant population who dont actually contribute anything to the Country either, and there are certainly thousands who work here and send their money home. Cant see that helping the country much.
There also may be few who dont declare any earnings,but we all need to get our cars washed dont we.

If this woman broke the law then surely by your definition the children in the class also broke the same law. Why are they not being threatened with the lash and/or prison, after all, they named the teddy.

Just step back for a minute and look at your reply. Ignore the rather coarse way that DtS put it but how in any way shape or form can you or anyone else possibly justify what these savages, these medieval, barbaric inhuman savages are doing? I have taken the time to read the Koran and the bible as any self respecting atheist would and no where in the Koran does it condone or encourage violence towards others.

Maybe saying you are justifying it was rather strong (badly worded in fact) but I can see exactly where Dave is coming from and to a degree I agree with him. Aid workers from the west go out to countries like Sudan to help and are treated like dirt, threatened, kidnapped and even murdered yet they still do it. Countless people dig deep in their pockets for Christian Aid, Oxfam and The Red Cross to help the needy in these countries we call third world. Every year we are bombarded with appeals from Children in Need and Comic Relief where the bulk of funds raised head abroad. And the government send millions overseas from our hard earned tax dollars which sticks in the throat when you see things like this on the news.

If they hate the West then why except aid from the West? We hate you but we like your money Is that the way of these Muslim countries that are so far stuck in the Stone Age that they can barely exist without hand-outs? Allah is Great, Down with Boosh and burn a couple of flags for the cameras but don't forget that monthly payment from Hilary Benn. Where's the tolerance that we have to show from these lovers of God?

This is meant to be the 21st Century and the west is expected to show tolerance of all faiths from all parts of the world. I say that that is becoming harder by the day when tolerance doesn't work both ways.

I will not give respect to those that cannot return the same courtesy and will not except religion over human decency.

I agree with a lot of the sentiment here. I'm sorry that there are millions of people starving in countries like Sudan, but I choose to not give directly to any charities that are associated with this plight as quite frankly, Africa is a bottomless pit with the way things are structured there. When I see situations like this with the teacher, it just makes my feelings all the stronger.

Until the west, the UN or whoever it may be head in there and remove the dictators and despots that "run" these countries, any aid that is sent out there will make bugger all difference. Of course, the west likes these despot types, as a means to sell countless military weapons as a tool to oppress their masses, so maybe we're part of the problem ourselves?

incidentally, was watching a BBC report on this a moment ago and she may have had good reason for thinking she wouldn't be prosecuted. Although Khartoum has been operating under Sharia law, this (so it had been claimed by the authorities) wouldn't be applied to non-Muslims. so someone's clearly messed up here, probably the govt caving into tribal politics. Interesting to note as well that alongside the predictable (and pretty ridiculous) protest, the opinion of the majority of the populace appeared to be indifference to the whole thing, with a lot of Muslims in Sudan also saying it was an over-reaction.

The whole thing is obviously pretty appalling, but i do think in this instance she's had the misfortune to get caught up in the Sudanese political situation rather than it neccesarily being a 'clash of civilizations' thing. I would, however, be pretty open to the idea of reducing or cutting off aid based on human rights records, and i'm firmly in the bleeding-heart leftie camp.
