Is it down to finance? players under contract have to be paid throughout the summer, so do we leave it late to sign players to save on June,July and possibly August payments? I can understand that, but it is very risky.

I am sure thats an issue, but wonder how so many other clubs , not swimming in cash, manage it so much better?

Yes we do. Looked like we wouldn't be doing that this year, but some things don't change.

I remember Brown saying he wanted to get all the signings in early this year. hmmmmmm that didn't really work out did it! IMO we need a very decent midfielder, winger, striker and at least one centre back. I don't think we will get that though unfortunately. I fear that we have already left it too late what with the season under two weeks away so that's already going to leave us off the pace.

But they don't. Apart from Burton, who as far as I'm aware don't have to many debts.

You have often said that , perhaps you might like to go through all the league one and two teams and see who they have signed and how they have done it, Then let me know whether its just Burton!

To be fair, he probably would like to, unfortunately Ron holds the purse strings.

It would be far easier if you just named the clubs who finished higher than us, but had a lower income.

Just also reflecting on Port Vale bringing in 13, not sure if any were on trial, mostly from abroad!

I wouldn't hold them up as an example. Foreign signings are very hit and miss at this level and I have my money on the Vale heading down a division this year.

I think you just may have admitted once, just once, everything doesnt completely depend on Money. Do you remember Ron getting well miffed when he complained how well Exeter and other clubs were doing on a much smaller budget than ours?

What does a skillful imagination or occasional risk take costs. Over 50 players
snapped up from the Conference in both leagues Riggers! Not many of them for fees. Do you remember when we would look abroad? How many of Port Vales 13 did they pay any fee for? Is it a dozen from Abroad. Where is our nouse or imagination.?

Why were all our loanees distinctly average, other clubs got some great ones in?

Why don't you just answer the question.....Bazza.

No ones interested in what Exeter achieved 10 years ago.

PS If I wanted to see a load of underperforming foreigners I would watch the Premiership. But at Southend ....No thanks

How do you know that? I remember it as a very telling comment by Ron and I bet he considers such things today. However my main point is about our not to great track record on triallists and loanees and whether we can positively improve it and I repeat it is not all about money but strategy , systems, scouting, communication, imagination, risk taking etc

Your great at saying all this but just point out the clubs who finished higher than us on a smaller income. Then we can all look and see how they achieved it. Pointless comparing us to Chelsea, as you have in the past.

I do agree to a large degree ............. but systems, scouting and long term thinking can take some investment to achieve (and a few years for there to be visible results).

Perhaps Ron reined in all that sort of spend in 2008 (or when the club was in court every month) and he was working to keep the club afloat?

I don't know but perhaps it is only since we have been back in Division 3 that the finances have been balanced enough to consider the issues you are raising.

As a small side issue I believe that Port Vale are losing money (and get quite poor crowds) - perhaps this season is a gamble to get the club back into Division 2 where all will be milk and honey.

Would expect 4 to be Sokolik, a midfielder (possibly on loan), a striker (possibly on loan), and maybe another winger as the last priority or another centre back, probably on loan.

Still time.
Didnt Assombalonga sign on the day of the first match or is my memory fading ?
Yeah he did, was announced three or four hours before kick off.

Anthony grant is still keen on a move.

Maybe we can do some business there. He is a player that can go straight into the squad.

We may have on pay a fee but we must have made over 1 million for Bentley Payne and hayden. Surely offering say 100k out of that money makes sense for a league 1 player of the year at his respective club.

We won't see any of that for quite a while. Tribunals and everything that goes with it takes a very long time.

As I said earlier, if Sokolik signs, Phil said another four.

Knowing that Phil prefers a player he knows, I wonder if we might also see the return of Glen Kamara on a long term loan now that Deegan has gone, Moussa not signed and Wordsworth and Timlin injured. According to this article, Wenger is looking at loan options for him.

This would seem a sensible approach getting Kamara (CM) & Pleguezuelo (CB) in - Although im always a bit nervous of young centre backs in the lower leagues. Could be a cheap option if Arsenal do us a favour...
