Wignall autobiography blasts Ron Martin

Not got time to read it in detail atm but in today's Echo there's a double page spread devoted to Steve Wignall's new autobiography "You Can Have Chips". Describes Southend as being anything but united when he started here, and seems to have quite a major pop at Ron.

Interesting stuff!

Who cares what Steve Wignall says about Southend United or our owners / management ?

The guy presided over one of the worst periods in our recent history, had no passion for the club and was basically a loser.

I can well imagine RM being on his back, and rightly so.

Lets bury this where it belongs - on history's scrapheap.

I can't quite see what the motive is in him doing this? Surely he doesn't expect to make a lot of money out of it.

Since parting ways with that utter ****, Southend United have progressed up the Football League pyramid and more or less doubled our attendances under Ron Martin's stewardship.

Steve Wignall, according to Soccerbase, hasn't managed since and presumably may soon be coming to a McDonald's near you to inform you that "You Can Have Chips". Even on your shoulder, it would appear.

Possibly sour grapes arising from the fact that on departure from the club he was offered £0 compensation?

You can't exactly say that the bloke has no axe to grind.

I agree with the other posters that this nonentity's opinion isn't worth the paper it's printed on. Why should he earn any respect from us?

I could write a book and call it 'you can have a terrible manager' look at what tilly has done in his time and thank our lucky stars we have him

To be fair though Wignall although crap did lay some of the foundations for Tilson.

Tilson did not inheret a bad side per-say just one that needed the right manage to get the best from them and Wignall was not the man.

Under Steve Wignall's (Wiggy ?) guidance, we was on a downward spiral, perfomances and attendance's were p*ss poor and we were losing bucket loads of cash each week, and in a real danger of eventually going out of business.
So of course there would have been divisions within the club, and good on Ron Martin for dumping the crap manager.

At the end of the day, look where we are now and look where Steve Wignall is now and what he has reverted to.

Totally agree. For starters, he shred a load of dross that had cluttered the club up for too long. From memory he cut about a dozen players, most of whom drifted off to non-league obscurity. He also signed mark Gower, Leon Constantine and Che Wilson who went on to do very well for us, so it wasn't all bad. I would rate him above Martin, Whelan and Newman.

Can we have a spoiler warning on this thread please?

Some of us are waiting for the film version of the book which is in production under the working title 'Wignall and I.'

I actually if we had kept faith in Wignall, we'd be in the premier league by now. Ryan Robinson would be Englands number 1, Mark Warren would be a colossus alongside John Terry in the back 4, Leke Odunsi pulling the strings in midfield with Stevie G and Drewe being the perfect foil for Rooney up front.

In other news, Betsy fell over in training, Kevin Maher has ignored a friend-request from Franck Moussa on Facebook, and turkeys have expressed a mild dislike for Christmas.
