Based on the thread about new 'keepers, I though I'd start a poll.

So, hypothetically, what would you do if we did sign Luke McCormick?

everyone messes up in life!! we all derserve a 2nd chance, I know he killed kids he has to live with that with the rest of his life!!!

So sign him, if he messes up again give him the boot!

Where's the option, Not Happy with signing a murderer but won't chuck ticket away?

Added the option....

As I said on the other thread, he has the right to rebuild his life and move on, I dont think its appropriate to put him in a position where fans idolise him after what he did.

I wouldnt stop attending but Id be disgusted he was here.

Why would being Southend goalkeeper mean that fans would have to idolise him? Were we supposed to be idolising Glenn Morris? I didn't get that memo.

if he signed Id drive a car onto the Roots Hall pitch and smash it into him, see how he likes it! Wouldnt want him near the club.

Everyone should have the right to work.

Lee Hughes and Marlon King are still out making careers so why shouldn't Luke?

But I'd rather he do it somewhere other than Southend, I don't want my clubs name getting more bad press.

I'm confused as ever. Moshni deal great. One of the few players I would willing pay extra to watch.
The keeper. Look what he did was criminal, shocking and disgusting. If he's half a man he will not forget for a single day the trauma her has caused that family. However if he is remorseful turns his life around, then that's all anyone could ask. I would not have a problem if he signed.

No one has to idolise him, but being a professional footballer would mean kids inevitably would.

Yes they do, being a professional goalkeeper is the only profession out there ? He could coach underprivelaged kids and make a living in plenty of other ways.

There are plenty of professions where you cant work if you commit certain crimes, that doesnt deny the person the right to work.

This is a highly sensitive issue.

I totally and utterly understand and respect the feelings of the victims family.

However, the idea of punishment is that you pay your debt to society. If a person is not allowed an opportunity to contribute to society ever again..then people would never be free.

If he has paid for his crime under the letter of the law, he should be allowed to work.

I would not, however, expect anything less than huge feeling in this matter.

Thread merge went bad, hopefully sorted...

don't want him, so i'm sure ps will find a suitable no 1 to suit the clubs needs, he has'nt let us down in the past has he.

If he was a police officer would he be back in the police force ? As I said above there is plenty of ways he can earn a living.

It is a highly emotive matter and one that will divide supporters and bring the club bad press. Just not worth it for me.

For those who are happy to see him at Roots Hall Ill ask one more question before I retire from the debate.

If those kids parents were Southend United season ticket holders would they still want him at the club, or even playing at Roots Hall as a visiting keeper ?

If Paul Sturrock believes that Luke McCormick is the best goalkeeper available and, crucially, that he's a strong enough character to be able to deal with the vile insults which will inevitably be directed his way 46 times a season from opposition fans, and probably some of his own fans for that matter, then I'd be ok with us signing him. He made a terrible, terrible mistake but it's a mistake that I believe that a great many people have done at one point or other. They were lucky and he was not.

That's not condoning what he did and wherever he goes if he wants to live in the public eye as a footballer then I'd hope that he'd do a lot of public work to educate about the dangers of driving whilst tired or drunk. If kids are going to idolise him (which I don't think they automatically will) then get him in schools talking to them and giving something back to the community.

Sorry, you're going to have to help me out here. I've obviously missed the bit of the relevant act (whatever one it is!) that stipulates that once you're convicted of a crime there is a limit to how much you can earn and how successful you can be.

as i said in the other thread, bringing up how the children will act because of him is not really an argument, as it could be applied to anythinno matter how obscure, and used so much its more often twisted for emotional blackmail than it is as a valid point.

As I said in another thread, if he was a police officer he would have been sacked with no right to be a police officer.

If he was working for a bank he would have been sacked, he would then find it very hard to get a job doing the same thing. Beefy made a valid point that this has affected him already as he is linked with a lower level and that is true.

Im not saying he should not be able to get a job, or even become wealthy. He can start a business and be the next Steve Jobs for all I care, as long as I dont have to clap him out onto the pitch at Roots Hall.

As per the other thread, I shall retire from this debate as Ive made my personal feelings known. I never want to see the guy at our club and will be disgusted if we signed him. If others dont agree and can live with it thats down to them.

It's an emotive issue. If I had kids maybe I'd feel differently.

I don't think he's going to be joining us anyway so I'm not sure it really deserves as much debate as we've given it.
