What is it with Tilson?

Just read on the OS that Tilly is unhappy with the ref today, and that he can't fault the players effort against Swansea etc.

He can never say the better team won, or that he got the tactics wrong etc.

Just seen on SSN Harry Redknapp's post game interview, and he said Tottenham were the far superior team, and totally deserved to win. Harry Redknapp is a realist and says it like it is, Tilson is not even like this.

You never hear this sort of thing from Tilson after a defeat, he always moans about the ref. He defends his players to the hilt, even if they play poor.

Bailey must be getting tips from Maher on how to talk himself into getting yellow cards. Silly sending off and he let the team down today.

League one next season me thinks!

Tilson you've alot to answer for...

if you were there? then you would know that the ref WAS ****ing ****, it WAS the refs fault we lost, it WAS NOT a silly sending off, he should not have been sent off at all

so what if we stay down, BRING ON LEAGUE ON then

not everything is going to turn out to plan, the sooner people realise that, the better

And he wouldn't have been far off without Clarke would he, worst set of strikers for a long time!

Entirely agree, we must break the bank to get clarke in January or I can seriously see us in a relegation battle come April. With the exception of Eastwood and Clarke, Tilly's striker signings have been woefull.

LoL.... that is amusing... with the exception of Clarke and Eastwood, his striker signings have been woeful?... that has made my Sunday!!

I give you Clarke and Eastwood, and raise you Goater and Gray!

Both of them played a HUGE contribution to Southend United gaining promotion twice in 2 seasons, and reaching 2 LDV finals!!

Honestly, are you trying to rewrite history for the purpose of this post, or are you really that clueless about football?????

He certainly has: 2 LDV Finals, 2 promotions, League One title, Beating Manu, 1/4 final of League Cup. Gates have trebled since he's been here. Best manager in the clubs history and also likely had an affair with'TonytheKrays' missus!

He's right, got lucky and signed 2, League 1/championnship players and a load of filth!

A load of filth that has taken us from brink of relegation to conference to safety in 1st season followed by 2 promotions, knocking man u out of cup, challenging for promotion again this year - some filth, some luck

Yeah, it made me laugh too. It's like your boss bringing you in for an annual review and saying "apart from those amazing two projects you did, what have you actually contributed?"

Or....

All right... all right... but apart from better sanitation and medicine and education and irrigation and public health and roads and a freshwater system and baths and public order... what have the Romans done for us?

things happen - you get rid of Foran and Gower gets sick.....

you're feeling positive about swansea but Leon can't play, Maccas been carrying an injury, Adam 6 goals Barrat is crocked, Black isn't fit, Morgan is learning everyones game AND then the stooooooooooooooooopid ref .........

truth is we are a good side but even at this level the margins are small and if things go against you its a thin line to the wheels falling off -

Wiggy you are a plum of the highest order. Tilly picks some gems......he's lucky, he picks some that don't do the business and he's ****. I hope you don't have kids.

I know you are probly Jonny Stokes in disguise winding us up but will you do us all a favour and **** off. Last time I looked we were still in the playoffs and in the FA cup. What the **** do you want.

Everything you say in this post is right . Also the reason why the missed challenge was so crucial was that Swansea then broke and scored their 2nd .If the tackle had been given we would have had a free kick on the edge of their box instead .

However the ref's one-sided performance should not mask a woefully inadequate display from the Blues . Without Leon there was no threat up front ( don't think ChasMac won one ball in the first half ) and even before Bailey went they were all over us . Swansea used the full width of the pitch to great effect and attacked at will past Hammell ( who also allowed the Swansea striker to get away from him for the by then meaningless 3rd). Sadly, with the exception on Maher and Lewis Hunt we didn't even look like we wanted it .

Also Tilly has seemingly lost patience with Morgan and Harrold who did not make the bench ( maybe he has got fed up with putting his head on the block for him - well done the boo boys :( ) . As a result there was no-one up front to hold the ball up , so the ball kept on coming back on us just like at Northampton where we were lucky to get away with it against inferior opposition .

The other major problem is the distribution from the back . Collis , especially in the first 20 minutes continually kicked the ball straight to a Swansea player ( admittedly ChasMac is not much of a target when marked by a guy who is 6'4"+ ) and Clarke and Richards also repeatedly booted the ball aimlessly up front , only to look surprised that it came back again . I would have thought that it would be quite simple to eradicate this from our play but we see it week in week out .

Sorry , Tilly but we can and need to do better than this and **** refs are a fact of life that we have to overcome ( ask Roy keane or Millwall fans this weekend )

We need to sort this out quickly as without Leon there seems to be little flair and most of all belief .I do not like to contemplate what things will be like if he does not stay with us in Jan - or has Tilly got another trick up his sleeve ??

Spot on H. Expect half the comments on here are from people who "watched" the match on Sky SS. It was dire!

Before Tilson took over in November 2003, I was resigned to watch Southend Vs Northwich, Leigh & Canvey Island in Conference because the team was bad, fast forward to 2007, we are in the Play-Off - anywhere in top 6 will be impressive for Tilson.

Before Tilson arrive as manager, the last 5 season in League 2, we was not good enough to EVEN challange for top 7 in League 2 for god sake, where was Wiggy & her boyfriend TonyTheKray in 1998-2003? in League 2 season, I used to dream that one day I see Southend challange for Championship - but realised we are million miles from having a team good enough to move up there - Tilson changed all that & we also make MASSIVE progress in FA Cup & League Cup - Southend was known as a club that get KNOCKED out in first round, now we are slowly becoming a cup side that good enough to knock out high league side.

Who has disabled the rep button?

This post deserves positive rep. Thank God some of our fans can see Steve Tilson's achievements in the context of our history.

Amen to that. Great post.

Yesterday was a horrid performance, in freezing weather, with ten men, against a quality team who ripped us apart at will in the second half. But none of that undoes all the work that Tilly has done in the past four years to drag this club up from the bottom half of League Two to a club with genuine Championship aspirations and the crap that gets spouted on here defies belief.

this post reminds me of the way that the daggers manager goes about things. he speaks the truth and no excuses. i do get very bored of excuse over and over again with tilly. i know he's no good at the interviews but would be nice for once to say 'i got it wrong' or something. not with regards to swansea game as i wasn't there and can't really judge what happened but i mean in general.

As someone else pointed out,Tilly never slags off his players in public and prefers to slag refs etc.Well,i prefer it that way,the players get enough stick from the stands home AND away so if the manager rubbishes them too what chance a good performance next time??

It's all about belief in the dressing-room and on the pitch which is then backed up in interviews to the press. The players' faults will be discussed on the training pitch - much better to be 1-on-1 with players to tell them how it is and what you expect.Throw the teacups around by all means if you're not happy at half-time but you speak to them collectively then.

You'll find many managers operate like this, don't ever hear Sir Fergie slagging his team off do you? And he's won a thing or two...

Oh,another thing,(climbs back onto box) -that Daggers manager that you are so impressed with has been saying on BBC Essex comes on every week saying how impressed he is with the Dagger's performances and how they will soon start picking up points, are now third from bottom.Great eh?
His psychology will send them down,so bye bye Essex mobsters.

if you were there? then you would know that the ref WAS ****ing ****, it WAS the refs fault we lost, it WAS NOT a silly sending off, he should not have been sent off at all

As I was listening on the radio and wasn't there then I'm quite prepared to be told I'm wrong, but it didn't seem like it was the refs fault we lost.

It was down to Bailey that he got sent off. Again, I didn't see the challange but - and you should know as you play yourself - if you've just been booked by a card-happy ref the last thing you want to do is give him ANY cause to whistle you just a couple of minutes later.

From the commentary, sending off or not, it just seemed that we came up against a better team on the day. So we go home, lick our wounds, and then do them at ours in the return match :D

As soon as he made the foul I thought that he was going to go for it. He'd just picked up a silly caution and needed to watch himself. The problem was that the initial yellow for dissent had come about due to a mounting sense of injustice on our part as the referee seemed completely unwilling to give us any decision.

The foul that Bailey went for came from just such an incident. The ball is knocked out of play and 12,000 people in the ground all clearly see that it went off of a Swansea player but the linesman, in the perfect position, inexplicably gave the throw to the home team and the ref, who simply must have seen it, refused to overrule. So Swansea get a throw, they immediately break to the edge of our box and a livid Bailey steams in and chops the guy down. I didn't have any complaints with the red although would like to see it again, but the incident would never have taken place had the game had a competant set of officials.

As it goes, we were lucky not to go down to nine. Maher picked up an early yellow and then spent the last hour of the game constantly moaning at the referee, he gave the linesman a bollocking in the aftermath of their second goal for not giving a foul to us which led to the goal and he petulantly kicked the ball away a couple of times towards the end.
