The Oscars racism debate!!

Surely someone should be judged on their performance and merit over the year. (just like football or any other sport or profession to an extent)..but no one should be judged purely on their colour of their skin. Call me old school, but regardless of religion, beliefs etc, ive always been rewarded by performance, be it as a kid at football or as an adult at work acheiving a a bonus or wage rise.

Oddly enough, it was Ricky Jervais that initially tweeted the question, (after his golden globe awards).. which grew like an internet fire fight, and also he added to it in his own dry humour, by asking why there was no chinese actors nominated for the Oscars also.

It's strange (or maybe it isn't) how upset people (mainly white people) get when some other people suggest something might be racist. You claim that awards should be a meritocracy - but those suggesting the oscars are racist would agree with you - black actors and directors aren't getting the credit they deserve (on merit). The nominations are very white and the awards are very white, although when you look at the list of critically acclaimed films there are loads of non-white actors and directors.

Are the oscars racist? I dunno. But like most traditionally white institutions I wouldn't be surprised if there was still unconscious bias. How many more studies and experiments do we need to prove that white people systematically treat people of other races as inferior.

Rather than just the oscars, I think the problem goes back to hollywood itself - black actors often overlooked for more 'academy friendly' (read 'pretentious') roles, and black actors not cast for 'non-black' roles (while the reverse is often the case).

I haven't seen Creed yet but by all accounts it seems very strange that Michael B Jordan didn't get a nomination. At face value a hugely successful and critically-acclaimed blockbuster and there's no doubt that MBJ is a fantastic actor.

It's a thorny issue alright. But Oscars aren't a meritocracy or even based on popular support. Otherwise Star Wars would have swept the board, and that did have a black star.

Seems a bit ruthless seeing as you'd only just started (IIRC). Probably a bellend of a manager and your face didn't fit. Fingers crossed you find something new (and better).

Im guessing by your posts that you are not cut out for the job market so why not set up something that you can work for yourself,like dropshipping maybe.

I am absolutely furious about the news story I heard tonight about asylum seekers in Middlesbrough having their front doors painted red! As a result, many are being targeted. Surely this is just a short step away from the type of branding that went on to identify Jews? Absolutely abhorrent behaviour.
 
I saw that on the tv news also. Disgraceful behaviour. It worries me for the future of our country when i see things like that. I guess racisim has always sadly excisted to some extend or another all across the country since the year dot, (they used to paint doors red in the 13th Century to people that they suspected had the plague), but I feel its ever more increasing, especially over the last few years. I dont know if its the media pumping out the "fear factor" so to speak... in order to gain viewers or sell newspapers: ie the war on terror / isis / Migrant Crisis blah blah blah... or it's more localised (which tends to be up north) with the grooming of white girls by foreign gangs etc, or as highlighted in that news programme, the fact that the immigrants have been located in smaller northern towns, which are less (dare I say) multi-cultural as London or larger southern towns etc, that have had more of an ethical diverse mix within their communities for many decades already.
 
That's yet more G4S bollocks isn't it? Not surprised at all. Lived with a guy who allegedly did work for them in and around Sheffield before. Said guy, in addition to still owing me £500 in quantifiable money, god knows how much in actual amounts, was a complete sociopath. Or psychopath. Despite watching every Sherlock EP out there I still don't know which is which.
