Question What are you reading?

Just finished Johnny Otis's autobiography Upside Your Head! Better on his musical reminscences than race politics but still an enjoyable read.As Paul Jones pointed out on his tribute programme, a few week's back, the book's worth getting hold of just for its amazing b/w photos .

Got a reading list as long as my arm (bring on May I say), but just added Misery to it. Not really read King before, so this should be interesting...

Inspired by what I've read on here, I'm going to give The Stand a go; have been wanting to see what all the fuss is about with Stephen King for ages.

After reading Robopocalypse, I've now started World War Z - Oral history of the Zombie War by Max Brooks.

Very similar books, describing apocalyptic events through third party reports. The first robots, the latter Zombies.

did enjoy Robopocalypes, but it felt like there should be more. Most books that get made into films you wonder what will be left out, but in this case Id expect that not to be an issue.

World War Z is much better so far. Again think it will be a bit short for my liking but so far so good.

Just finished 'The Winter King' - Bernard Cornwell. About the only thing of his I haven't read. Great stuff - also worth checking out his viking saga if only for the mentions of Benfleet.

My Easter hols. reading took in Granta 118-Exit Strategies.I used to subscribe to Granta, back in the days when Bill Buford was its editor. These days I just pick up on the travel writing specials and other occasional issues.118 doesn't disappoint, especially the first 2/3 stories/extracts.

Daniel Everett's: Language The Cultural Tool.Really puts the boot in to Chomsky's Universal Grammar(quite rightly too,IMO).An interesting read.

I quite like UG. But this Everett v Chomsky thing is a real ding-dong.

ps I dont like Chomsky at all, I thought you might have liked him.[/QUOTE]

Thanks.I'll check out the reference.I thought you'd be interested.:winking:
Though I'm a great fan of Chomsky's politics I've never been convinced by UG.I remember a talk he gave at the UAB back in the 90's on his Perfect Theory, which had students walking out in droves.

Fourth year of our MA we did advanced syntax which leant on Chomsy's minimalist programme a lot. I preferred the constructive historical stuff, or the advanced semantics myself.

Fourth year? :omg: Two years was enough for me (and that was pt).Check out the Everett book.I think you'd enjoy it.FWIW,I agree with you on MP and preferring the early stuff (though tree diagrams I could certainly live without).:winking:

It was a Scottish MA, i.e. an extra year on top of a three-year normal degree...
although I am tempted by more academia at some point, when money's not a problem.

Capital.John Lanchester's ironic and comic take on present day, state-of-the nation- London. His fictional Pepys Road(supposed to be near Clapham Common)rather reminds me of Hope Close, in the People's Republic of Islington, where one of my brothers (not Shrimpero, the other one)used to live.Funnily enough, he's an Investment banker, as is one of the main characters, in this wonderful novel.
Hugely enjoyable and destined to become a modern classic. It will surely be made into a GB film or TV series too.
Quite interested by Lanchester, was thinking of starting with 'A Debt to Pleasure' and 'Whoops'..........is this a good idea?

Just started the first Game of Thrones. Interesting, but not a page turner yet. Not seen any of the TV.

Takes a while to get into and once you get into the characters and how its written I found I wanted to get to the next time that character had a chapter.

Read all the books last year back to back. Do get a bit rambling in the last couple but very enjoyable.

Re above: Good lord - I can do the Harry Potter series in a day, estimating (never tried it and still only on book 2) I could do Game of Thrones in a week if I pushed it, but I probably never will.

Got another book to get on May 1st - the last in the Kane Chronicles series from Riordan. Hehehe... been waiting for this.
