Question What are you reading?

just finished Carte Blanche, the new Bond by Deaver. Deaver's a favourite of mine anyway, but this is superb stuff, stays close to the legend of Bond, and delivers on every level. Now reading some Jack Reacher before moving onto Nudge.

Took on hols with me Dawn French's first "novel" entitled "A Tiny Bit Marvellous". It tells the story of a relatively normal family from the perspective of each of the family members in turn, and for anyone with a teenage daughter, it's well worth a read!

The first chapter is written from 17 year old daughter Dora's perspective, and it's very accurate in its observations! It begins thus (not sure how much will get through the swear filter! EDIT - not too bad actually, only one word lost!):
My mother is, like, a totally confirmed A-list bloody cocking minging arsehole cretin cockhead of the highest order. Fact. In fact, I, of this moment, officially declare my entire doubt of the fact that she is in fact my actual real mother. She can't be. I can't have come from that wonk. Nothing in any tiny atom of my entire body bears any likeness to an iota of any bit of her. It's so, like, entirely unfair when people say we look alike because like, excuse me, but we properly DON'T thank you. And I should know. Because I look at her disgusting face 20/7 AND excuse me, I do actually have a mirror thank you. Which I've looked in and so NOT seen her face, younger or otherwise, staring back at me. If I do ever see that hideousness, please drown me immediately in the nearest large collection of deep water. I would honestly be grateful for that act of random mercy.

At 5.45 pm today she had the actual nerve to inform me that I will not apparently be having my belly button pierced after all, until my eighteenth birthday. She knows I booked it for this Saturday. She knows Lottie is having hers done. It was going to be our like together forever thing. **** my mother and all who sail in her, I hate her. She's fired.

I know it probably won't appeal to that many of you men out there, but you can recommend it to your better halves! :winking:

One for Drastic Sturgeon (and probably Rusty, although if he hasn't already read it, he'll have seen the film): Bernard Malamud's the Natural.

Just plowed through The Natural in a couple of days, thoroughly enjoyed it. Learnt some more about baseball, loved the way it showed the seedier side of baseball life in the 40s/50s, Malamud's writing seemed ahead of its time - Hobbs' dreams & inner turmoil reminded me of the beat generation, and you can see the influence of mythology on the book too. Very good.

Just finished a Jackie Collins book - Married Lovers.

Too predictable and not as good as her other ones. Luckily, I didn't pay full whack for it.

Just started Mark Kermode's The Good, the Bad and The Muliplex.(What's wrong with Modern Movies)?
Hugely amusing read by Britain's best film critic.(I'm suprised he didn't mention the old Aaben cinema in his piece, as a student in Hulme, back in the 80's,though).

Doesn't say much for film critics in this country, I cant stand him!

I love Mark Kermode. Except his opinion on Star Wars. And Will Ferrell.

In particular, his opinion on horror is great. The best form of film there is.

I often disagree with his opinions eg in the book on The Deerhunter and Heavens gate, which he loathes but he's always entertaining, which is a lot more than can be said for the likes of Derek Malcolm,Philip Strick etc

Kevin Maher's a decent film critic, which is more than can be said for his shooting.

I'm not really here by Paul Lake. Very sad really.

How not to be professional footballer by Paul Merson. Was getting a bit samish with the drinking tales but some bits are very funny:
Merse gets sacked by Villa and has a call from Harry Redknapp.
Merse: What are Pompey like.
Harry: ****ing **** son. They finish in the bottom half every year and always have to win one of their last games to stay up. I've come here and I don't believe how **** they are.....come down, I'll make you captain and we'll have a right ****ing go.

The last line on the final page had me laughing out loud for 10 minutes. Definitely worth a read.

Just finished some dreadful bit of junk called 'Siege' that I got as a present. You could almost hear the prose clunking along the page

Haven't read any Dickens for a while, so I'm just starting off "The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club" aka "The Pickwick Papers"

Ian Botham's autobiography, interesting stuff to say the least!

Finally got around to seeing a programme about him the other night ('Botham: The Legend of '81') and the day before the fight-back at Headingley all the team were on the lash at Botham's for their annual barbecue. No-one thought they had a chance - the bookies had them at 500/1 - but ... well, you know the rest.

Thought I'd give "One Day" a go, as I'm getting a bit bored of Keef Richard's autobiog.

I know it's bad form to quote myself, but this is a brilliant book, especially if you're around the same ages as the main characters. Haven't devoured a book like this in ages.
