Question What are you reading?

About to finish James Herbert - The Secret of Crickley Hall and then think i'll be starting on the Girl/Dragon/Tattoo/Hornets Nest trilogy type thing effort as its been recommended to me

Launching myself into the Song of Ice and Fire series by George R R Martin. Taping the series on Sky Atlantic but prefer to read books before seeing the adaptations.

Just finished Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. Difficult but rewarding read, nothing quite like it. They made a film out of his 'No Country for Old Men' but just how they would manage to transfer this into film God only knows............it is already so graphic. I need to read it again........but not for the moment......next, a nice bit of Scandanavian crime fiction will be easier and rather more digestible. Here's a taste, read by the author.............you've been warned!

Just finished Inverting the Pyramid by Jonathan Wilson... Thought it was OK, it's good material and there's plenty to keep a tactics obsessive interested but I thought it lacked something incisive. There wasn't really much attention played to the thought processes behind tactical changes, just who was responsible for them and what effect they had on the game at the time. It also dragged on in places, referencing obscure teams and players when it really wasn't necessary.

Started Africa United this week, which looks promising.

I thought Inverting the Pyramid was excellent in places, but dragged in places - not one you'd read again, but interesting for historians rather than tacticians.

Agreed.A lot of the historical stuff was as dull as ditchwater.

Just finished reading Billy Bragg's The Progressive Patriot, a brilliant read for liberal/leftie like me who still feels patriotic. Bragg's arguments are well put and well researched, plenty of 'yes!' moments but also plenty to make me question by own views too. As much autobiography & history book as it is political.

About to start 'Maus' by Art Spiegleman and 'Schulz & Peanuts' by David Michaelis.

Driving Home

Jonathan Raban's An American Scrapbook. An excellent collection of JR's journalism and travel pieces by our best expat author.Makes you want to visit Seattle.

One for Naps, knowing his enjoyment of Scandinavian crime fiction.

The Preacher by Camilla Lackberg, the second in her series of novels, good stuff.

Ive read the Ice Princess, I thought I read the Stonecutter as well, but having looked at it, doesnt ring any bells. The Ice Princess was good, probably a bit flabby in places, but a good read nonetheless. Let me know what you think of the Preacher.

I'm about half way through and it's a bit tighter than The Ice Princess, I've also got the Stonecutter in my pile.

Wish you were here

(England on Sea) by Travis Elborough.Really not very good.Perhaps I was just miffed that he didn't have that much to say about Southend.

The Guardian magazine - article about a disease(?) called Morgellons. Scary **** - check out a few Youtube videos from suffers - alien parasites living in your skins that leave behind cactus like spines that seemingly have no link to anything found here on Earth. :Scared2:
