Question What are you reading?

Have ploughed through all 1069 pages of Ayn Rand's 'Atlas Shrugged', and whilst I admired the Objectivist manifeto contained therein, and many sections of beautifully lyrical prose, I wish she'd tried to get the message across in 300 pages. Hard work.

To cleanse the palate, I've taken up Michael Savage's 'Liberalism is a Mental Disorder' - good chucklesome right wing common sense.

The Post above....apart from that revisiting a book I read some years back....

Mission by Patrick Tilley.

"What would you do if, through an unexpected twist of fate and time, you came face to face with Jesus of Nazareth? In the flesh. A living, breathing, three-dimensional figure with a disconcertingly casual manner. When you had pinched yourself to make sure that you weren't dreaming and found that he was still there, would you turn your back and walk away - or would you try to find out what he was doing so far from home?

That was the decision facing Leo Resnick, a smart young Manhattan lawyer, and his girl-friend, Dr Miriam Maxwell. Mission is Leo's record of his encounter with The Man. If you've ever looked up at the stars and wondered what it all means, this is the book you've been waiting for. Mission is the nearest you'll get to the Secret of the Universe this side of the Apocalypse".

:stunned: Well I wouldn't offer him a Smartie.

Sapper Martin by Richard van Emden,an interesting look at the horrors WW1 through a Royal engineers diaries from 1916 to 1918,great read.

Just finished 'Popular Music' by Mikael Niemi. A thoroughly enjoyable read, especially if you're a fan of Nick Hornby like me, the comparison is justified. A fairly typical coming of age story about growing up, bullies, girls, music, sporadic violence & alcohol - what sets it apart is the the fact it's set in Northern Sweden inside the arctic circle, and it's a very alluring image. I certainly identified with the affect of music on a teenage boy, and found a great deal of laughter in the stories, especially when his father has a man to man chat with him and advises him not to read, as thinking too much leads to problems.

Now reading 'American Splendor: Our Movie Year' by Harvey Pekar, and lined up for after that is Douglas Coupland's 'Generation A'.

'Stasiland' by Anna Funder.
A collection of stories about how the Stasi affected life & individuals in the GDR. Very interesting and well written. 7/10 I'd say.

I'm currently reading Frankie Boyle's book "My **** Life So Far". It's very funny but also a good insight into the life and mind of a comedian. Brightens up my bus journeys to uni. I'd recommend it, good Christmas present.

Next up on my reading list is American Splendor (graphic novel) and Men Who Stare At Goats by Jon Ronson.

Men Who Stare at goats is a very good book. There's a lot of weird tuff urrounding the American Military, and this is a small inight. I read it about 2 (maybe three) years ago. Got it for a couple of quid in HMV of all places.

Would like to ee the film, but I think it's a very loose adaptation.

Currently reading Douglas Coupland's 'Generation A', only about a third through but it's brilliant so far - a sci-fi story really set in the not at all distant future where all the bee's have disappeared. Great Stuff, a return to form so far...

Just finished As I Lay Dying and have started reading Milan Kundera's Ignorance and The Life of Times of Tristram Shandy by Sterne.

Just finished one of the best crime books I've ever read. "Wash the blood from my hands" by Fred Vargas. Very highly recommended, starts off slowly, then adds a few red herrings, makes you doubt the protagonist, but the way he solves the crime, the denouement, is extremely well done.

10/10

Out of sheer desperation of having a bare library, I'm re-reading The Dice Man by Luke Rheinhart. Must be 15+ years since I first read it and at the moment don't remember any of it!

Crazy book, starts off fun then descends into madness.

Just finished 'Generation A', which was a marvel. Coupland back to his best imho, he uses the sci-fi angle to great effect to shine a light on current issues.

Now reading 'The Beats' by Harvey Pekar, a graphic novel about the Beat Generation (Kerouac, Ginsberg, Burroughs et al.). Good stuff so far.
