I asked, because you’re the acknowledged expert on all matters fish and because I’m in one of those pedantic moods my wife despises.

A kipper - as you know - is a whole herring split from head to tail in a butterfly fashion. All I’m asking is if you cut the kipper down the middle, losing one of the basic characteristics of a kipper, ie the butterfly shape, does it cease to become a kipper and becomes two halves of a smoked herring.

There’s probably a lot to consider here. Do you think I should start a thread and throw it open to all?
