West Ham

It always makes me shake my head ruefully when you hear them on telly singing "1-0 to the cockney boys" or whatever, and you know that a large percentage grew up this side of Basildon!

Mockneys!

Yep, still got one somewhere, ludicrous APR as I remember. I do remember going to that la PouBelle restaurant in westcliff and the woman assumed I played for Southend when i gave her the card ?
She called her son down for an autograph

....With regards to this debate. Bought up as Cockney scum as I am, in Poplar and then Dagenham logic dictated I would support West Ham like all my family. Which i did for many years.
As someone has already mentioned ,the Bond scheme and various other factors made me give up following football altogether.
My girlfriend introduced me to Southend, a devotion I will continue until my clogs pop.

Back in those days I would never have regarded Southend as a friend or foe, indfferent.
Today many of my friends are still West Ham and none of them rib me about supporting Southend. If I told them about the animosity towards West ham, most understand it but are not bothered about it, much the same way as they regard Orient as their little brother, even though Orient "hate" the little neighbour tag and it is patronizing.
I will meet up with lots of old pals end of the month to see the Cockney rejects at Stratford. It will be mad if west ham get through to the FA cup final, I will not for one night only go back to the way I was, it'd be like sleeping with an old girlfriend, In all honesty I don't pay West ham any notice at all though I will always treasure many memories.

...Ambivalent is what i'd say, and I only care about Southend.

53 quid to get in at West Ham.

No not for me my season ticket works out at 27 quid a game.

Any truth in the rumour that its going to be 22 quid at Roots Hall next year if you go up( nearly said we there)

No news on ticket prices for next season at all, only rumours at the moment.

I think the club are waiting to see what division we will be in before any decision is made.

If you was playing ManU, Spurs, Ars*nal, Liverpool & Chelsea - bit a waste of money if you get a 4-0 tonking

- Iam sure its cheaper when WHU played West Brom, Birmingham & Sunderland etc.

A quote first mooted by Ms Burchill when reviewing the "Cockney Cowboys" Sham 69 as I recall, the strong wind being in relation to Hersham.

"Cockney", I believe, refers etymoligically to a deformed egg which would denote the 'runt of a litter', as city folk were often under-nourished and weak, (* checks websites, nods head in the affirmative) Cockney was a derogatory term at the outset for the poor working class of London. West Ham was in the olden days part of Middlesex and not London. the old East End went as far as Aldgate/Whitechapel IIRC

The Bow bell of course is now at Cheapside.

We do have cat a or b games and the b games are cheaper but i have a season ticket in the BML and it works out at 27 or 28 quid a lump. If we do get a whacking from time to time ive seen it before and ill see it again. I can remenber Southend tacking a few whackings over the years part and parcel of it.

Maybe next season in Championship, we could get tonked by Crystal Palace & West Brom at home or away, who know we might do the same to them.

I don't hate West Ham I hate the supporters that I see at roots hall every home game that wear their West Ham shirts when we play them in pre-season friendlies.

I've never understood the theory that you can support 2 teams? I appreciate their cash but to do wear their west ham tops in the east bank turns my stomach...

sorry to be pedantic and upset a few people but West H** in the old days was in Essex, as was every town east of the River Lea in what is now called greater London (since 1965). It includes our old friends in Leyton as well.

Weather west ham was in essex or not doesnt come into it does it?

Bueaty of football murky. you never know

I was at a party before the season and someone asked me how i thaught Southend and West Ham will do i said they will both do well to stay in there respective divisions..

My point being murky yes you may take a few whackings nexyt year but you will come back for more because its in your blood its what you do. Unfortunatly Euro 96 got people intrested in the game that canot grasp that.

Yes, I stand corrected my pedantic friend.
I have recently done a lot of genealogy and all my ancestors from West ham/Limehouse areas were located in Middlesex Registers.

So! historically they're Estuary English....like what we are.
Not "Cockneys"

I have done a bit of family tree ferreting as well. Bethnal Green used to be Middlesex, so I presume Limehouse would be as well.
I didn't know that it was the River Lea was the dividing line that makes a bit of sense now
