In this day and age I would have never thought it possible for a plane to be missing for so long. Maybe there are more details that are being held back.

Yep massive, latest areas are -

a northern corridor stretching from the border of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan through to northern Thailand
a southern corridor stretching from Indonesia to the southern Indian Ocean

The Northern corridor is all land based. Could a plane crash in a remote part of land and not be noticed? I would not have thought so.
