Unluckiest player to be released ...

The Tilson one was equally baffling, especially as that **** Whelan himself walked just weeks later ... i'm sure i've read in more than one place that he had offers to stay in the league but cos he only ever wanted to play for us he decided to go non-league with the marsh rats
I believe the reason Tilly was released was due to him approaching his testimonial season and the club couldn't afford it.

Scott Forbes must be up there.

Was plucked from obscurity and within a few weeks made the left wing his own. Dont think anyone would class him as the most gifted of players but he made up for that with his all action style.

As the season wore on he got better and better and started to weigh in with a few goals. Think you will find he was a blues fan too. Injury took its toll sadly.

Left us and drifted down to virual obscurity over night.

DtS in "I am Ricey" shocker!

Another vote for Reggie Coolball here, i thought he was quality

Dont recall it really being Whelan's fault - I thought he was under instruction to trim the wage bill...

Anyways, Regis Coubalt for sure - class act, considering he started his Blues career at right back and looked awful.

I'd have to say Maher too... did nothing wrong on the pitch and all the nose-tappers can say what they like about it, I think we'd be higher up the league with Maher in the side than we are today.

That's as may be, but i also heard that he was only on about £300 a week whereas some of Whelan's **** head mates were on much much more but were offered new deals

Yea, fair point.

They were probably under contract so would have cost money to release, Tilly (and the others) being out of contract at the time would have cost nowt to get off the wage bill... which brings me to another contender...

Julian Hails!!

Legend is too strong a word, but I thought Hails was class once he got over the stick from the fans (bit like Mahers Southend career).

I remember going up to Leicester midweek to see him it a hat-trick!!

To be fair I dont think he was released as he was forced to retire.

I cant see what was classy about him, very little skill but worked hard and was in the Pettefer mould. He was certainly one of the reasons why we got relegated from the 2nd tier but he improved more and more as we came down the divisions.

The hatrick was on a nice sunny afternoon!

Was it?! I remember it being midweek at Filbert Street.

Who else scored a hattrick around that time at Charlton I think, midweek?

It certainly was on a saturday. There was a dire midweek cup game at Filbert Street the following season.

We did beat Charlton away 3-0 that season but I remember Dublin and Thomson scoring.
Mooney got a hatrick a couple of years before but I dont think there were any others at that time. In fact I'm sure that after Hails, the next hatrick scorer was Leon Cort in 2002.

Without scouring soccerbase, that's how I remember it too. Mooney scored the hatrick against Oxford. The next hatrick after Cort was Freddy on his debut wasn't it?

Adrian Clarke, left winger dissapeared soon after one of our many relegations.

I felt sorry for Clarkey, he joined us as decent Championship club from Arsenal on a 2 year deal - by the time his contract was up we were in League 2 and he was out of a job. He worked for the Echo for a while and then on some website, i think he actually works at Arsenal in some capacity now**

btw - im not a stalker....

Tilson was unluckly to be released - if he was with us, I reckon we would have finished around 16th in "old division 2" instead of bottom and we would also enjoy the games agasint Colchester, Man City, Stoke and Reading etc the season after that.
