I will start off with two legends.

Bobby Charlton - Preston North End.
George Best - AFC Bournemouth.

Any more?

Gareth Bale - Southampton - don't like him but he surely has to be in this list now.

My first match was SUFC v Chester. A certain Ian Rush was playing for Chester that day.

....and meeeeee....lol. A cup final, many moons ago !!

I guess there will be quite a few from back in the day as it was much more common for top players to drift slowly down the divisions. With the money earned these days, players can usually afford to quit at the top.

Thinking of players who started their careers lower down the leagues though, would Ray Clemence or Kevin Keegan have played at Roots Hall for Scunthorpe? Or, for that matter, Ian Botham?

Kevin Keegan certainly played at Layer Road for Scunthorpe he looked a great little player even then, I remember we said that young lad looks decent who is he, Kevin Keegan, never heard of him. Ha ha.

Keegan certainly did. I remember reading his autobiography and he referred to our ground as "the Wembley of the 4th division"
