Tommy Black

Nothing really worked for Black yesterday, but I still quite like him. He seems an 'honest' player in that when he makes a mistake he still comes back and wants the ball to try again, and doesnt hide. Id still maintain he has been as good if not better than Gower this past month. Yes Black was poor yesterday (I thought Walker was worse but generally do rate Walker) but dont see why we should change a side that has been in such good form generally.

For me, Man of the Match yesterday was Francis. Really think he looks class as a full back......I really hope he is still here next season now he is starting to show the promise his reputation hinted at when he joined.

Tommy was shocking yesterday... and I am starting to wonder whether he is really good enough for where we want to be - but we have seen glimpses of what he is capable of and hopefully he will do what Gower appears to have done and up his game to silence his critics!

Having said that I can't agree with this...

I like Tommy Black. Bit hit-and-miss but I think he is an exciting player. Much prefer him to JCR.
JCR is in a different league to Tommy and I wish we still had him!!!

Tommy Cack I am sorry to say is in my book useless.

He has scored one goal all season, offers very little going forward I think and defensivley he is worse that useless. For a player to have played at the level he has for so long I would have expected so much more.

I personally think the worst aspect of his game is that he is a total bottler and never gets stuck in where there is any chance of getting a knock.

For the first time in living memory I didnt stand up and clap the player that came off. I feel Tilly really needs to find a winger and quick.

Not sure on Scannell but would not say no to him dipping into the loan market. I cant watch much more of Tommy Black.

I wouldn't call Black a bottler. I think he gets stuck in quite well for a winger. The thing is he's like a kid in the playground just chasing after the ball, rather than performing his defensive assignments. He is one of the worse defensive players I've seen in a long while.

I think he flatters to deceive going forward as well. Whilst he is better than JCR in that he does sometimes give first time passes, he still holds onto the ball for too long and fails to release players in better positions than he is.

I still think he'd be best utilised from the bench, but who then starts?

Based on the games I've seen him play and reports from elsewhere, he's been exactly what I expected when he joined us.

He's the kind of player who will play poorly a lot of the time but when he plays well he wins you matches. Mitchell Cole was similar. I wouldn't say poor acquisition as he has contributed strongly to several wins. I didn't actually think he was that bad yesterday to be honest.

I think Mitchell Cole was far more potent going forward. Cole had an excellent cross on him which set up a guilt edged chance pretty much every game. The problem with Cole was that he was a bottler, who didn't like the idea of being tackled.

In blacks defence if he had seen half the ball that gower had got I think he would have done something, on numerous occasions he was ignored while being in great postions, on one particular occasion he was completely free but was given a useless pass.

This has been going on for several games, he gets frustrated at being given a decent pass so goes looking for it. It does seem a little restricting that Gower is always seen as the only natural outlet for a pass across the field.

You're right - if both Black & Gower are available as passing options eight or nine times out to ten the players will go to Gower. But doesn't that speak volumes for the rest of the squad's opinion of the two players?

when black got the ball he did nothing but give it away... surely it's fair enough for the players to avoid giving it to him. he saw plenty of the ball IMO and it was the first time i've not applauded a player when subbed

Black looked alot better when he was playing through the middle. I don't really think he has done much when he has played out wide.

The fact of the matter is that the guy is probably the most skillful player we have and could be our best player but he isnt anywhere near fit enough. IMO, he needs to have a very long pre season next year and lose some baggage

Just posted this on the Simon Francis thread but how about Grant playing right midfield? A more defensive option maybe but it would allow Franno more chance to use his pace and undoubted attacking flair.

Bit surprised by some of the assessments of Black on here. For me, he's had some excellent games this season and is, by a country mile, the most naturally skillful player in the squad, although I agree he might be a bit unfit and that he's been best going through the middle. He is a massive creative outlet for me and when he is on top form, he can win a game on his own. He's an asset. If he was so 'shocking' yesterday, then I dread to think what kind of adjectives can be used to describe the majority of Mark Gower's performances this season.....

He had an off day, but since the new year, I think he's been excellent. Bear with him, and if Tilly can get the best out of him, he'll be out of this world.

No way! On their days, Gower and Black are both excellent. However, Mark Gower's off days this season, and I can recall a few of them, have been insulting. Black was disappointing yesterday, and Gower was much the better of the two, but a few of Gower's performances, especially in the last 2 months, have been appaling and further compounded by swearing to the fans when he is rightfully given grief by them.

Tommy Black's poor performances this season have been way, way better then mark Gower's poor ones.

I think we're going to have to disagree with this. In my opinion, Mark Gower contributes more to our attacks on a bad day than Tommy Black, or any of our other wingers over the past decade for that matter, do on some of their better ones.

Maybe you have a point though. Thinking about it, I've seen Black have a good day and a bad day. Up until this season, I'd seen Gower have the same, but this season he's added a new level to his game. Appalling. I love Mark Gower, he brings so much to this team, and OK, maybe his off games are better than Black's - but his appalling games, two of which I've seen this season, just take the whole biscuit.

Agree with you, JamesTheSuperBlue. Very well said.

When TB is fit and on form, he'll be amazing. He's shown glimers of what he's capable of, so lets leave it down to Tilly and co to get it out of him, because if they can, he'll be a jem to watch.
