Todays Game

Not a good performance but we got the win. Its the cup so thats all that matters I guess. So long as we dont carry that performance forward into the league game next week it will be fine.

Hopefully we will get through and bag a decent team for some cash.

We may well have won but that second half ranks amongst the most dire 45 minutes of "football" I've seen at Roots Hall. I've defended Hooper enough times in the past but I'm slowly coming round to the opinion that there's no so called potential and we've seen all he can offer. As for Harrold he was much better again today but I'm sorry amongst the Harroldinho touches and occasisionally holding up the ball we have the slowest, clumsiest and weakest 6 foot forward in the league.

I'm really pleased we got through but extremely miffed to have paid £15 to be bored ****less in the second half. Rochdale may have been "poor" opposition but we should have steamrollered them. As it turns out we almost got caught out at the death.

It was worth my quid for the singing in 2nd half....didn't watch the football...bored me :)

SUFC 'till i die

P.S. Trueblue truly is a legend

I am sorry but today's pathetic performance against a not very good Div 2 team will not do.
Based on what we saw today neither Harrold or Hooper is good enough to play League football - the rein of King Kev is at an end and the standard of Scottish Football is pretty poor if Hammell was good enough to get an international cap.
Because of the current injuries and suspensions several of the above will get to play next week (oh joy!) but as soon as other players are available these four should be put on the bench or better still, playing for the reserves.
Our league position hides how poor we are (can't get a point off any other of the other top half teams) and we need to get rid of at least these four players in the January transfer window, free transfers for all,and get in some better quality players.
In next Saturday's programme I suggest that:
a) there is a statement from Mr Martin that money will be available in January to purchase new players and that he will back the manager in his transfer dealings.
b) an apology from Mr Tilson regarding today's performance and the promise that he will ship out some of today's failures in January and replace them with better quality players.
Rant over.:D

What did Hammell do wrong?

Crikey, I was a bit disappointed but this is ridiculous!

Harrold linked play really well today. One moment where he took a hopeful punt dead in one touch and swung a beautiful ball across field in an instant was probably the best moment of the match.

Hooper was pretty poor, I'm happy to concede. I'm starting to think he might never turn in to the player he could be.

Maher hasn't played for a month or something - it's no surprise he looked rusty but he never really needed to worry too much because we seemed to be playing in second gear for the last 80 minutes.

I have literally no idea why you've singled out Hammell as well. I thought Hammell played well, overlapped excellently when he could, usually defended against two players at the back post and made our opening goal with an excellent cross. Did he actually do anything that bad??? In fact, how can you criticise one full back when the other was skinned so thoroughly on more than one occasion that the opposition decided to launch everything his way in the second half.

To be honest, this was one of the least inspiring Southend games I've seen in some time but there were definitely mitigating circumstances. We could have had a hatful today but completely took our feet off the gas. Second half I was just bored really.

Regarding Harrold as penalty-taker, I can't believe he's our best. Am I alone in thinking that it's not too much to have one player goo enough to go higher than waist height? Can't imagine them ever being saved.

Overall, it was pretty flat but we have put a defeat behind us that was difficult to take and we will be in the next round without the bother of a replay. We were lethargic going forwards for long spells and slack at the back though and I sincerely hope we won't play like that next game. I'm just hugely relieved that the Rochdale guy missed the free header at the end because that should have been the replay right there.

Not a game to remember today. One of those dire games in front of a small crowd that takes you back to when we were in League Two. Fair play to the West Stand for getting the atmosphere going a bit in the 2nd half. You know it's a boring game when the stands start singing to each other.

I was annoyed when Hooper started and he did nothing to change my mind. I really hope Charlie Mac gets a run in the side now. Hooper is too slow, too lightweight and he gets caught offside too often.

I thought Harold actually had a good game today. I agree with the person who said there must be better penalty takers in the side than him (Bailey surely) but his all round play was good today. Held the ball up well, a few nice runs and worked very hard as ever. I was impressed with Moussa too. Technically I thought he was very sound - good passing, good control, good awareness. Defence was solid again and Bailey had a good game. Thought we should've finished them off better than we did but hey we won.

I thought Moussa grew as the game went on. He looked a little out of his depth at the start but grew in confidence as the first half wore on. He's got a very good touch, decent range of passing and makes surprisingly good decisions for someone so young and inexperianced.

If Gary Hooper takes two touches of the ball, the second is usually a tackle! Nuff said.

As for Mr Tilson moaning about the crowd, despite the technical accuracy of his comments regarding who picks the team, he ought to reflect that this is the same crowd that pay his wages and thus keep him in hair gel.

Too many sub standard performances like today's and I can see the league crowds being as low and Mr Tilson running out of time!! Obviously there is a different perspective from the dug out, or just in front of it, than there is from the stands, but perhaps Tilly should go and sit in the Directors box for 45 minutes and he might see the game that we see, rather than the rose tinited spectacle that he no doubt thinks he sees!!!!

I thought Harrold was pretty good today, Hooper huffs & puffs & tries too many clever flicks and I have to say I thought Maher was pretty poor verging on woeful at times.

I agree. I don't remember Maher getting a single pass to one of our players. In the end he just kept trying to flick it over the top of their defence. Awful.

To be fair:

- The crowd are the ones moaning about Tilson and he's defending himself. Winning games is a pretty good defence.
- Can a manager who has his team in the playoffs and who has already played his two hardest games of the season run out of time?

Again, disappointing today but it's still a win. At least we've learnt that Hooper/Harrold in tandem aren't going to cause too many troubles for a League One team without losing or even drawing.

Can't understand this persistent battering that Matt Harrold takes. OK, he is not an out an out striker (more a forward), and his finishing is not the best, but he worked hard today, held the ball up very well and brought others into the game with simple yet intelligent balls.

What I also find difficult to understand is the love-in surrounding Hooper amongst a number of our fans. He tries silly flicks and tricks in even sillier areas of the pitch, which often results in the opposition countering. His body language is awful even when we are winning, and he really does not look good enough. What does Charlie Mac have to do to get a chance?

Tilly....make subs earlier...when will you learn? Yes, we got a result (which ultimately is all that ever counts in football) but we were quite frankly dire after the early goal and made a pub team look decidely better than they were. How you can't test the two fattest centre backs in the football league is beyond me.

Satisfied that we are through to round two, but worried that we never seem to get out of second gear in games and have absolutely no killer instinct. :(

I agree 100%

I agree. I can't put up with many more 2-1 wins.

If Tilson had any decency he'd have resigned following today's win.

How many more wins can fans put up with?

You really do speak some bollocks ORM.

Drewe Broughton "plays" in the football league.

Also Harrold was probably the best player on the pitch today.

I just could not believe my eyes.

Last minute, ball comes floating over from a wide position into our box and lo and behold there are TWO unmarked 'Dale players on the edge of the goalmouth.Friggin heck all we have to do is mark the players who look closest to our keeper as the ball is slung over but we can't even do that.
No wonder the phrase is coined often "we went to sleep at the back" or "moments lack of concentration cost us".

That defence needs sorting, they just don't look around them.

Rochdale missed an easy chance to score at the death. In fact,it was harder to miss that chance.

And we moan about our strikers:confused:

And how many times have we conceeded that exact same goal that we conceeded today?! Too many times.
