Timothee Dieng

TIMOTHEE DIENG
Slagged off on here frequently
13 goals so far this season ( Defensive Midfield)
Exeter player of the season.
EFL League 2 Team of the Season.
:Tumbleweed:

Is he playing defensive midfield for them? I’d assumed he was playing further forward in a more attacking midfield role as Molesley had him doing for us. He was one of the few to come out of last season with any credit.

His 12 league goals makes him 8th top scorer in L2.

Mitchell Pinnock is second in the assists chart with 12, McLaughlin 5th with 9 and Paddy Osadebe (who we never saw in a Blues’ shirt - cheers Ron), 15th with 7.

He clearly was a clever footballer. I expect that Exeter said “play just behind the front two - don’t bother chasing back or tackling, let the others do the work for you“
Yeah this. Clearly the way Exeter play suits his style. He was expected to battle and put his foot in here as we slid down the leagues.

Which he didn't fancy doing - good luck to him for winning whatever awards he wins - most of the time with us he couldn't be bothered. Have no time for players who pick and
choose how much effort they decide to put in.

He certainly didn’t seem up for the fight here .. it was alleged he (amongst others) ‘faked’ injuries .. and yup you’re right I don’t want to see players wearing the SUFC shirt who aren’t 100% committed but he’s gone now..good luck to the fella.

He 100% did do this.

Without any inside knowledge when we signed him, I said he’d be really good in a promotion chasing side, but awful for a side battling relegation, and that looks to be the case.

I won’t forgive him for things that have gone on behind the scenes, and I can only assume with Exeter winning matches, he actually wants to play/train/attend meetings etc.

Yeah that’s a weird one. His first season here he played 50 games for us and this rumour started that he was faking injury.

Meanwhile the likes of Kightly and McLaughlin played nearly half as many (and played so poorly) and nobody says a thing.

I remember a game around the Charlton one (when Oxley got sent off). We had no fit midfielders and so he played when “half” fit. I say half fit but he was patently not even that fit as he moved as stiff as my dad when he had his back op. That to me is a player who didn’t hide: one who pulls on the shirt when not fully fit as the team asks him to.

He played over 100 games for us in 2 and a covid shortened season. That’s not someone who hides. That’s not one who makes excuses.

He played in defence, in midfield and up front without complaint. He took his share of knocks - particularly in defence and then latterly up front when he was used as a target man.

Even when his teammates were being ****s he was respected by both sides of the divide and given the captaincy which he handled, like the rest of his Southend career with dignity.

Maybe he gets the abuse because he showed up and played when not 100% and so people remember him as they frequently saw him play whilst they forget those who were stealing a living collecting their (late) pay cheques in the treatment room on their way to retirement and so were much less often exposed?

There are many who have a lot to answer for over the last 5+ years but Dieng isn’t one of them. Good on him for his success and it’s just a pity he was let down by so many - but mainly Ron - so he didn’t experience that sort of success here.

Here's story about "fake injuries".

An international footballer who will remain nameless came to see my wife (a physio if you didn't know) because he had an injury that just wasn't getting any better. He'd been out for longer than he thought he should (i.e. months rather than weeks) and he wasn't comfortable with the treatment he was getting from the club physio.

After an examination my wife told him that the club physio had mis-diagnosed the issue and therefore the treatment he was getting was ineffectual. She got him better in a couple of weeks.

In the meantime I looked on his club's forum where they were slagging the player off saying he was faking injury to avoid playing in a losing team.

(As an aside, she told me that when he first turned up and mentioned his name he was clearly expecting a reaction, but didn't get one because my wife didn't have a clue who he was as she's not really into football!)

Fascinating story and no doubt quite true.

Sadly though, it is hardly relevant to the sight of Dieng strolling round the pitch without a care in the world.

As a defensive midfielder or centre back can anyone remind me of any decent tackles he made?

It's a reply to the accusation of faked injuries.

Fair enough and there’s always two sides to every story. Dieng wasn’t/isn’t an awful player but something wasn’t right. There was a toxic atmosphere around the club. I don’t know if his injuries were genuine or not and the allegations I heard were from others closer to things than me. I wish him well and he seems to have found a happy home at Exeter.

100% his “injuries” were not “misdiagnosed”.

Ultimately, a manager who wasn’t cutting his teeth at the time would have dealt with him completely different.

I’ve rarely got involved with the debates over MM, he had his strengths and had his weaknesses (and was undoubtedly dealt a **** hand), but a stronger, more experienced manager would have dealt with the likes of Dieng & co differently.
