The real world may be sh!t but the pay is certainly better.

If I had my time at University over again I would certainly do things differently.

Is there a pun headline writing course?

Do students study classic pun headlines such as:

Andy's got the Ansah.
Angell of Mersey.

Is there a convention defining the the correct shortening of player surnames if they consist of more than one syllable (Beckham -> Becks, Lampard -> Lamps, Sherringham -> Sheri)

Either that or I'm a grumpy old man at 35

No I agree with you, and i'm 23.

They are a complete nightmare now and when I started at the uni in 2004.

They even stoop to lower levels now, by dressing up in drag for nights out....
oops.gif

biggrin.gif

I'm at the Uni of Gloucestershire studying Exercise & Health Sciences, which if i'm honest I've found fairly easy so far so have spent most of my time drinking. Well, it would be rude not to at those prices.
The first year is always easy!

Wait til you hit the 2nd and third year at Glos uni. You'll be lucky to make it out twice a week as there is so much work. But then I am doing 2 completely different subjects in my Joint degree, which are probably much harder than what you are doing
tounge.gif
very true... all the stuff you get told about being organised and not leaving it till the last minute is very true. Make sure you get organised in the 2nd and 3rd year and you'll still have time to get on it! the exams are nasty but i still think a levels are the hardest things i've done to date

I'll never forget standing in my uni bar at the University of Kent at Canterbury watching the Canvey game and going mental with two fellow Shrimpers when Jay scored THAT goal.

Was also forced to watch the play-offs in uni bars because I had exams throughout the semis and final.

Remember watching the Forest game on Sky and when Freddy scored I nearly got myself in a fight with some seriously peeved Forest tw&theads.

The good ol' days
laugh.gif

haha yeah i watched the playoff final at uni too because i had an exam the next day... all i can remember is jumping around and everyone cheering me.. i was the only guy in the pub remotely interesting in the game... im sure some randoms were buying me drinks but i left them and hit the library!!

Its not bad actually, Learnt a fair bit in my first semester and most of the modules im studying seem to make sense. Couple of sessions (mainly one module) that have no relevance to journalism at all and are just there to make sure i get the points to graduate, but apart from that the course is pretty good. Actual journalists doing the course instead of trained lecturers seems to be working well.

Only bad thing is some of the lectures are conveniently placed at 9am the morning after the big student nights... So i'm either suffering at the back or i don't go and get the notes later.

I had an awesome night in the college bar that night when I was in Cambridge. I was totally ****ed up, had got all my mates wearing various Southend shirts for some solidarity AND it was a hawiain themed evening....

hmmm sounds a bit different to Preston where my sons course id half Sports (along with the sports studies students ) and half Journalism (with the Journalism students ) and nothing at all specialist. He has hardly done any sports writing

My assignment over Christmas is a 500 word piece suitable for publishing in a local paper, but Sports is a banned subject. I'll be doing a lot of Sports writing next semester, culminating in a piece for the Uni magazine. So far i've been learning mostly about the set ups of Newspapers and journalism methods...

I have one module thats shared with 2 other courses, but all others are specific to Sports Journalism.

Something suitable for publishing in a local newspaper is hardly demanding criteria, although I suppose stretching out to 500 words reports of the theft of Mad Cyril's lawnmower from his shed might be quite challenging.

Do you lose points for accuracy?

Its more about making it suitable for copy... Using the right abbreviations and such, double spacing etc...

Are you involved with the student newspaper outside of your course? We had two student rags at my uni. One won lots of awards, the other was very good. I wrote occasionally for the award-winning one rather than the good one, but only out of loyalty to my housemate who was deputy-editor.

Not that my housemate was particularly loyal to me. When I wrote an indepth feature on the US presidential race the article was butchered and dumbed down in a way that suggests the sub-editor might now be at ITV. When I questioned my housemate about it, he claimed that it wasn't the type of thing students were interested in reading in. I pointed out that students weren't interested in reading about student politics (election turnout under 5%) but that was invariably the lead news item because editors were more concerned with getting into Fleet Street than satisfying their readership.

And as if to prove my point, the very next edition I demonstrated my versatility by breaking the biggest news story in my three years there: Joe's chip van being banned from the beer garden of the local pub. This exclusive which affected the day-to-day lives of hundreds if not thousands of students who relied on Joe's for their daily sustenance, was also banished to the inside when it so blantantly was the biggest news story of the academic year.

I'm not involved in the paper as such, but if one of my assessments is deemed good enough i think it gets put in to the online paper called Overtime.

i did a few album reviews for my old uni's paper but never really properly into it. I would definitely recommend it to people starting uni as potential employers love these kind of things!
