Its got to be the Shrimpers. Its unique (Although somebody is called the Shrimps, forget who) and sets us apart from other teams.

The Blues is a lot easier to use in chants but its gotta be the Shrimpers. Perhaps its being changed to The Blues because its shorter than The Shrimpers and would possibly cost less to put it on road signs etc.

We are the Shrimpers as (I know its been said before) because it is unique as the only other club with the same nickname is Harwich & Parkeston. Like many clubs though, we get called a colour, due to the colour we play in.

A few examples are, Liverpool, who nickname is "The Pool", but nine times out of ten they get called the reds, as due Man U, when they are the red devils.

The only difference between us and many other clubs is that the club seems intent on calling us the blues, and not our proper nickname.

Perhaps we should sign a petition and give it to the club?

Morecambe, which incidently I somehow found myself on their pitch (in Christie Park) at 2AM this morning after my friend decided to walk home to Lancaster Uni from a club in Morecambe and we went after him.

Could a leading figure in the trust put this question to the club over their next tea and biscuits session

They have in the past, haven't they?
Cool, then who has the answer why the club insist on calling us the Blues through Marketing and Media.

This really isnt a major issue, but during the close season, I tend to become more pedantic.

I'm sure Naps knows... and Leeboy... certainly Scriv... Beaver... MtS probably.

I think the powers that be just said that they felt Blues was a more marketable name.

It was John Main who started it off by placing the road signs on the A127, IIRC

It requires fewer letters to be printed on signboards, letterhead and other promotional material, and therefore costs less...

Well, that's a guess, but (frankly) it wouldn't surprise me if that was something approaching the reasoning behind it.

I don't know the official reason why, though.

I personally am a fan of 'shrimpers'. There are so many professional and collegiate teams over here in the US that use colors for names or nicknames, that I think being the Shrimpers is unique. My first thought was Chelsea when I heard "blues;" shouldn't a nickname be a distinctive feature and one not shared with several other clubs?

Ron was asked at an AGM why the blues and not the shrimpers- Ron replied- because I like it.

(Thanks to Terry J for this nuggetof info)

A cartoon strip of the 20's made reference to The Shrimpers.

Whatever, Shrimpers is fine but as ever I will bring out old Gonger Frost for the defence. Alfred or Gonger (don't ask me why) Frost was an original 1906 player. In 1946 he stood as independent for Pier Ward. This is what he says. 1906 Gonger for the United
1946 United for Gonger
Supporters of Southend United since its inaugeration will no doubt remember me as the "Blue's" inside right in the old Roots Hall days. From 1906-1920 I played regularly for the "Blues" except for a period of two years which was spent with W*** H** United. During this period , I do not think that anyone could say of me I did not always give of my best. The inverted comma's are his by the way.

There does seem to be a tendency to forget the old "traditional" nicknames

Coventry
Crystal Palace
Chelsea
Spurs
Leeds
Reading
Wrexham
All use different nicknames to when I was a kid (30 odd years ago) . Reading supporters voted for the new name ( Didn't Sunderland do the same ?)
Coventry and Leeds changed theirs when they changed their club colours.

Well I'd know those teams as follows:

Coventry - Sky Blues
Crystal Palace - Eagles
Chelsea - Pensioners
Spurs - Lilywhites
Leeds - erm, United?
Reading - Royals
Wrexham - Robins

Which are 'old' and which are 'new'?

I remember Sunderland having a vote for 'Black Cats', as their old name of the 'Rokerites' went out of date when they moved stadium.

And Sunderland were getting called the Mackems when they first moved to the SofL

They still are - that title applies to people from Sunderland, it is not to do with the football team as such... similar to 'Geordies' from Newcastle, 'Scousers' from Liverpool or '$%&*ers' if you're from a $%&*hole near Barking....
