Rusty Lee

Coach
I notice on the official site they have a new larger banner with "The Blues Official Site". Does anyone know why the club are so insistent on changing our nickname from The Shrimpers to The Blues.

I for one find the The Blues very non descript and lacking character.

Would people like to comment and vote?

The Blues makes you think of the scummie Birmingham City Bluenoses, something that I would never want Southend being associated with. Therefore its Shrimpers for me.

Does anyone know why the club making a conscious marketing decision for a shift to The Blues.

This has been taking place on mechandise, tickets even road signs as you enter Southend

That we're The Shrimpers (rather than The Blues) and we wear navy (rather than royal) blue sets us apart from all the other clubs in the League.

The shift to 'The Blues' on the part of the club seems a shame to me.

Rusty you have used the words 'non descript' and 'conscious' in two posts now mate, probably time for a lie down isnt it?

Interesting topic. For me it seems as though oppostion fans refer to us as the Shrimpers far more than we do. I mean, we don't really have any "Shrimpers" chants, do we? Whereas we chant "Blue army" and "Come on you blues" regularly during matches.

Then again, 'The Blues' is a very generic and banal nickname so ultimately I'd prefer us to keep The Shrimpers as the official one.

Yes we are, but the problem is the club seem to recognise only one of the above. The Blues should be used when convenient (like in singing), but (IMHO) The Shrimpers should be recognised as our official nickname on merchandising and other branding (eg. Shrimpers World).

Whilst the nickname 'Blues' is more chant-friendly, it is far too non-descript and generic, there are loads of teams out there who call themselves 'The Blues' (Chelsea, Birmingham etc).

'The Shrimpers' is far more unique, I think we should keep this.

And funnily enough, Chelski also use The Blues in lieu of a more unique nickname.
