The Ashes - 2010-2011 Thread

I really REALLY need to go to bed ... but everytime i think they are are bedding in we take a wicket

36-4

This is the cricket i grew up with, except then it was the Windies routing England over and over ..

225/8 a bit of a recovery led by Mr ****ing Cricket, but still a good position for England. When you win the toss and put the opposition in you'll want to get them out for around 250, England look on target for that.

Yeah we slightly let them off the hook and they now look like getting past 250. Though some of that is to do with conditions easing. Would have taken that before play, but not at lunch! A few more big sessions needed as opposed to if we had got them out for 130ish.

Come on lads, lets win this one and keep the convicts down!

Solid start from Strauss and Cooky this morning... Not a fan of this Convict trend of mouthing off as they leave the field. Ponting deemed it necessary to to have a dig at Strauss in Adelaide, and it was Johnson running his mouth this morning. If you can't take the heat, don't stand in the kitchen boys... Keep your mouth shut and let your cricket do the talking.

268 was probably 50 more then we should have let them get after lunch, but is still a score we would hvae taken. Interestingly, we got them out for 244 in the first innings in 2006, before surrendering a 30 run lead and then letting them get 500+ with 3 centuries and a 92, beating us by 200 runs. Our batting line up does seem to be made of sterner stuff at the moment and I just hope we can bat for the majority of the next two days to turn the screw and keep their bowlers in the field.

Well done to the boys! The 45 minutes of concentration at the end of the day cannot be underestimated. There was enough time to change the impetus and the Aussies to build on their partnerships at the end of their innings. Straussy looked shakey and Cook pure class but all is irrelevant as we go into Day 2 with 10 wickets still in hand. A good night's sleep to think about our achievements and everyone is happy. Don't be fooled, there is a long way to go in this test match and the psychology and momentum can change very quickly!

A great position though and hopefully we can seize on their lack of confidence. Let's bat for the next 2 days and skittle them out cheaply in their second innings.

Come on England. Remember Australia is our colony.

Agree, was vital that we didnt lose a wicket, wouldve swung some momentum the Aussies way. Can see Cook getting another ton and us getting 450ish. The Aussies can have as many pace bowlers as they like, theyve all been pants so far (bar Siddles hat trick).

It's obviously a day of superlatives for slips.

First there was Paul Collingwood's catch in the slips, then there was Tom Fordyce's slip of the Freudian variety in the paragraph above the photo of Colly - best Freudian slip?

Word coming out of Oz is that Ponting will be replaced if England win this test. Apparently he admitted so in interview today.

Agreed with Vaughan; the Aussies looked a beaten side today, the top order appears to be shot to pieces.

Highlight of my day was listening to Justin Langer on TMS explaining that Australian skies are bluer in colour than anywhere else in the World, followed by claiming that England were poor today. ****.

The plan for England now if possible is to bat deep into day 3, keep the conicts out in the heat for 11 hours and grind them into the dust of the WACA.

I think its great, shows we have them proper rattled!

What do I wake up to?............................The sound of champagne rapidly being taken off ice and the horrible noise of that mediaeval Australian torture machine being cranked up................thought that had been banned from this series? Will be regretting letting Australia off the hook a bit yesterday, allowing them to get well over 200.

43-2 as I type, so if we can limit them to low 200's its not completely over.

I don't know what's more worrying, our batting collapse or Johnson's ability to swing the ball both ways whilst Anderson is toiling with it.

England look a seamer (and a half) short to me. We can't keep up the pace attack and with Finn having an off game (despite his 2 wickets today), it means our bowling is really stretched. Australia were able to attack with 4 quicks and it's paid off.

It's what happened at Headingley as well, they reverted to an all-pace attack which meant when they got the initial breakthrough they were able to keep the pressure on. Whereas when we had Australia on the ropes our quicks were tired and Finn wasn't firing and Johnson was able to play himself back into bowling form by teeing off against Swann.

Christ on a bike that was a tough day for England. Finn is bowling without enough control to stop the run flow, could be a 350+ chase if we don't take Hussey/Watson/Haddin in quick order tomorrow. What do people think is a realistic chase in what, apparently, are going to be easing conditions?

Still fancy us to take another win in this series, so wont start worrying; if anything it may give us a kick up the backside.

Think the game slipped past us in the final half hour, but am still optimistic we'll win at least one of the last two to retain the Ashes.

Has Bell hit a hundred when no-one else has yet? Would have loved him to do it today but it wasn't to be. Think anything over 280 will be tricky, but anything under 450 will still be doable if things go well.

Fear not cricket fans, the colonials have no extended batting and will only set 350 or less for victory, the champagne is already on ice.
