Post-Match Thread and Ratings SUFC vs Trannies 13/02/2010

I actually said in the car coming back when listening to Boothroyd, that the way he handles interviews is exactly how Tilly should do. In fact, I wish he'd listen to a few of John Still's interviews and take a few tips from him.
Exactly my thoughts Andy. Still, IMHO, is fantastic in the way he gives his views. If they've been rubbish he says "that wasn't good enough, but we'll be better next time" & also "if certain players don't want to play I'll find others that do". He was very honest today about the blip they've had in their season & that they've not been able to replace players that have left, so he's rebuilding a team with youngsters which will take time. He doesn't seem embarrassed about being at a club that struggles to compete financially in the league that it's in & comes over with a very positive attitude win/lose/draw. He also makes a point of never blaming the officials even if he thinks they've made a mistake.

Boothroyd can be a bit more dour but again he's always honest about how the team have played.

You are correct in Tilly should take notes from these 2. He could learn a lot.

Watching a different match to many of you again. I thought Scannell had obviously overdone it with his player of the match performance against Colchester because today he was back to normal. Moussa had flashes of good stuff but other than that was nothing special, Jeff on the other hand, I thought, had a good game.

Wrong line up and poor tactical play cost us I thought, we knew what type of game Tranmere would play and in a game like that we needed Macca on from the beginning. Herd should have played left back, no question about that and M'voto should've been on the bench.

Mildy - 7
Franno - 6
M'voto - 5
Baldwin - 6
Barrett - 7
Scannell - 5
Jeff - MOTM, 7.5
Moussa - 6.5
Watt - 6.5
Vernon - 6
Laurent - 6

McCormack - 6.5
Spencer 6.5

Maybe you should be the manager!!

This where you fall down big time. You say you don't big Macca up, but Scannell was one of our best players today, Macca was not overly interested in being on the pitch, yet you give Macca a high score than Scannell....will you ever learn???

He wasn't though, he was dire. Yes, he put a few runs in but his pass rate was terrible and he lost the ball or ran into trouble frequently.

Second half he was double marked because he was so good in the first half. Maybe someone in CM :whistling: should have helped him out rather than running round like a headless chicken shouting a lot

Agree about Scannell. He just seemed to overrun everything today - a different player to the one we saw on Monday night unfortunately.

......and this is where we are now, players that 'can do it', but their good days are few and far between. We have been on a downward spiral since the end of October and scratched 12pts from a possible 45 and this is relegation form. With our next three games being MKD, Norwich and Charlton we will be in the bottom 4 by March.

The players look shellshocked to me, with little shape. A team clicks when players form onfield partnerships and these link together, I cant think of one in this current team of apparent strangers.

Tilly's interview seemed to suggest he is backing the club no more.

I'm about Scannells biggest critic (said he wasnt good enough for a Lg2 club the other week), but thought he had a good game today to be fair. Only player who wanted the ball, wanted to take people in and got in some really good crosses first half.

2nd half he was doubled-up on.

Laurent on the other hand was the opposite. I really like him, but 2nd game running he was awful. Always trying too many tricks instead of just ****ing trapping the bloody ball!!!! Just once, stick your ****ing foot on it and pass it to a Blue shirt... no, roll under the studs. Rolls left... rolls right... rolls ****ing royce.

Macca should never have come on in that game - Moussa and JFC had the middle sown up and we should have shunted Laurent out wide where he is most effective and stuck another striker on.

Moussa summed it up for me, when Macca came on and told him to go left, you could visibly see Moussa's shoulders slump and he shook his head.

Team has lost its way.

Mildenhall - one save and good command of his area - 7

Francis - inept defensively as per usual, but nothing going forward and hopeless set plays - 2
Mvoto - distribution not the best, but made up for with good defensice display - 6
Baldwin - bottled out of one challenge. Liked his cajoling of colleagues though - 6
Captain Quicksand - probably the best left back at the club. Wholehearted and committed - 7

Scannell - good first half, average second. Some neat skills, learned from Laurent? - 6
Christophe - much better than at Sandbanks. Should have scored with a couple of free headers - 6
Moussa - a class apart in the centre, then had to make way for the Facebook Kid and got shunted left - 7
Watt - poorly treated by the ref, and then affected by injury. Is he any good? - 5

Laurent - won the penalty, lots of nice skills, but doesn't look like scoring - 6
Vernon - well done on scoring the pen as a Col Ewe player. Quite good! - 6

Subs:
Wages O'Sin - caused us to lose any impetus going forward we had. Awful shot into the side netting - 5
Spencer - not involved too much - 5

Sorry Kay but I couldn't disagree more. Scannell was the only one of our players who could come off with his head held high. Tranmere were clearly told to close him down at half time because he was the only real threat.

Our problems mainly came from central midfield IMO, both before and after Macca coming on. Yes, Christophe put in some good tackles but all of our moves are slowing down to a crawl when they get to the middle of the park. We are playing with so much fear. Again and again we had three players against six in the final third while our midfield stood off. There was so little support. Since Freedman stopped getting a game (despite being off the pace this season) and Sawyer left (for all his faults) there is no one who can thread a pass through the middle for a striker to run on to. They pass the ball backwards or sideways allowing the opposition to get back in position. It is so easy to defend against and SO frustrating to watch.

Tranmere are clearly a poor team (Sorry Andy S - I can't see that they are in a false position in the table) and were ripe for the taking but we were so negative. Watts played like a boy in a man's game - he looks lightweight and has added nothing as yet. Eaststandblue - I normally agree with most of what you say but Francis was not good in defense. Their left winger had the beating of him all afternoon. Tranmere had relatively little height in their team but his set pieces regularly didn't clear the first defender. When M'Voto finally got a decent ball into him in the box he nearly scored. I feel sorry for Herd who is good at set plays.

In conclusion - that is our poorest game since being beaten by Crewe at home last February. Clueless tripe. I am now very worried.

Hopefully we can take advantage of Carlisle's 5-0 mauling of McDonuts today. Agree on the partnerships thing.

Think they will treat it more as a bonus that they are playing next a team that never has a shot on goal despite what Tilson keeps telling us!

Can't understand the comments slagging off Francis today. Yep, most of his open play distribution was poor, but there must be 5 or 10 comments saying how bad his set pieces were. He put 2 on Christophes head, which he should have scored and another one on Mvotos (i think) which he should have scored. Had they been able to head the ball, those same kicks would have been worshipped on here.

I actually thought in the first half, we were OK - we were patient, and played some decent, controlled and incisive football at times. Perhaps the final cross or pass was not quite up to scracth, but honestly, thought our midfield with Mouusa alongside Christophe today was half decent.

We should have gone in at least 2 up, and had the first half gone on for another 5 minutes or so, I'm sure we would have, and I suspect Tranmere may have capitulated if we'd got a second - they were simply shocking.

Two turning points - Our appalling defending at their first corner - it simpley has to be more difficult for an opponent to score than to just get one corned, and a poor one at that!. Second key moment was the injury to Watt. Not in itself, but in the tactics that ensured.

Macca should NOT have been his replacement - Moussa was having some joy in the centre of the park with his passing, and JFC (who was my MOTM) was not only doing a good job in helping out the back four, but was actually appearing in the opponents 18 yard box. When Macca came on, we lost shape, we lost any forward momentim we had, and our passing went completely to pieces. Tilly ought to have brought Soencer on for Watt, moved Scannell to the left, and Laurent to his favoured right sided position, and we could have maintained that attacking threat.

No guarantee we would have got the positive result, but by bringing on Macca at that stage, it completely took the wind out of our sails, and although we may have only got 1 point this week, we have looked a far better passing side without him in it.

As for ratings, well JFC was my MOTM - He did miss a sitter, granted, but he broke up play, help protect the back four, and was busting a gut to get in the opponents danger area, and actually looked like he wanted to win the game more than anyone else for my money.

Mildy - 7 Decent save in the second half, not much else to do.
Francis - 4 Thought that was as nervy as I've seen him, and even his set pieces were poor
M'Voto 7 Best performance since he came back from injury - match sharpness returning
Baldwin - 6 Not convinced, but early days
Barrett - 6 Don't like him at left back - not quick enough, but usual full hearted effort
Scannell - 5.5 Performance levels way down on Monday night - maybe because he was up against a left back who we trialled in the pre season and didn't sign - If only we had!!
Christophe 8 - Best game for a long time - the pressure of Macca returning may have had an added motivation, but very impressive for me
Moussa - 6.5 Passed the ball well, although at times, failed to impose himself as much as he would have liked
Watt - 5 Struggling to make an impact as of yet, and today, was largely MIA - Clearly has ability though
Laurent - 7 Won the penalty, looked dangerous, sometimes looked clueless, but is our only genuine threat - has to return to the right side
Vernon - 5.5 Scored the pen, worked hard, but is he better than what we have? IMO, no, he isn't, and Patterson and Spemcer should be given there chance to build a partnership together

We missed a trick today with MK Dons, Norwich and Charlton in the space of 7 days, and that may come back to haunt us - the constant changing of personnel in defence is causing major headaches when it comes to even the basic fundementals of defending, and I am beginning to wonder if anyone on our coaching staff is working with them on a daily basis as we seem to be guilty of the same mistake every time - it's painful to watch, and as I said in August, no matter how good the rest of the team is, you cannot build success on shifting sand, and with our defence, it will always undermine anything we do until it is rectified.

Mildy 7 Not a lot to do but did it well when needed
Francis 5 Poor again, so many hoofed long balls ending up going nowhere
Baldwin 6.5 Solid, would be a good signing
M'Voto 6 Odd moments but is slowly returning to oldself
Barrett 7 Worked his socks off and really wanted the ball, had a good game
Scannell 6.5 Not bad but his runs have no end product too often
Moussa 6.5 Looked good at times and disappeared at others
Christophe 5 Didn't do much but had no impact
Watt 5.5 Injured for 10 minutes before half time but hobbled on, gave away needless freekicks and didn't get enough of the ball
Vernon 6 Good penalty but did nothing else, ran around a bit but didn't look like he ever wanted to shoot
Laurent 6 Did well to earn pen but again faded late on and became lazy
Subs
Macca 6 Did alright, tried to get forward well
Spencer 5.5 Didn't have an impact

Think Paterson should have come on for Vernon, his pace and shooting could have caused them problems.

Honestly, one of the most boring games of football I've ever seen. How we didn't beat them I don't know and am now seriously considering the possibility of life in League 2. Having watched the Football League Show I think we could put a very strong title challenge up in that league and would also have to sell some of our higher earners (ie Dougie, Macca, Francis). But with the likes of Scannell we could do well and would also give the youngsters like Herd and O'Keefe more of a chance to break into the first team.

Mildenhall - 7.5 - as good as Flavs now
Francis - 4 - can't be bothered to play for us, time to swap for Sankofa.
Barrett - 7 - did ok out of position
Mvoto - 6.5 - another 2 games and he'll be back
Baldwin - 7 - solid
Scannell - 7.5 - excellent for 55 mins then faded probably should of been sub'd
Jeff 7.5 MOM - played well, had 3 decent chances pick of our players
Moussa 7 - probably back on left next game
Watt - 5 - I hope we're not wasting loads of money paying this guy cos he's naff swap for Macca next time with Moussa going to the left.
Laurant - 6.5 - sometimes i love him sometimes i hate him
Vernon - 6 - still need another striker

Subs
Macca - 7 - played well think he'll start next game
Spencer 6 - ran around looking for his dinner

Ref - 7 - did ok

Tilson - 9 - did better than usual with tactics and subs
