So if we can't actually sign anyone for various reasons, how have we signed Timlin?

We already hold Timlin's registration I'd guess as we didn't release him. Also, if the 20 players rumour is true then he'd be player #20 or #19. Take Barker out and we have #18 players I think. Room for Clifford and Forte/Bennett.

Was at game tonight, thought we were very good, especially against the players we were playing against. We spent a lot of the time in their half for the first half. I left the game feeling really confident that we will win promotion this season, As champions. With the players we have got.

Lots of positives. I liked the way Atkinson and White linked up in the first half. Impressed also with Coker, and it was great to see Timlin back on the pitch. Of the three trialists, Connor Clifford looked very handy and would make a great signing, but does he duplicate what we already have and given current restrictions a centre forward and centre back are a must. All in all a good night's work although defending set pieces a concern.

Although I wasn't watching it intently, the only time QPR looked like they were going to score was from corners, when it looked like they were going to score every time!

Was pleased with the lack of route one, and at least looking we were trying to pass the ball around a bit.

Still think we are missing a CB (even without any injuries!) and some pace up front. Other than that I think we are OK.

How many goals have we conceeded from set plays :( Bentley not exactly commanding is he :nope:

He is to busy pushing people around and tryIng to make space for himself, definitely needs to improve on this part of his game, it was apparent last season too. Just as bad as smith in this regard, otherwise a top keeper.

I was very iressed overall with every player on the pitch, take the goals away and I think we edged it. Laird looked stylish so I hope his injury isn't too bad. Clifford looked good and I take it Cowan was the lad on the right/upfront in second half? I would sign both up when we can!

Coker looked decent on my first viewing, whilst white seems the same as I remember, pretty no nonsense defending.

Corr won a lot and looked in good shape, Eastwood did okay

Good workout for the lads last night. We do seem to have brought in some good players in White, Coker & Atkinson. The first 11 should be able to compete well at this level but we need Forte in ASAP. 2-3 more players (midfield / defence) and we should be able to have a realistic push for promotion, especially if we have a bit of luck with injuries & every Southend United supporter gets 100% behind the team every game to make Roots Hall an absolute fortress.

Really looking forward to the start of the season.

COME ON YOU SHRIMPERS!!!!!!

I think you are right. People are being a bit critical. Looking at who we played, the players they had on the pitch, the money they are on and the fact there were in the premiership last year, we did very well. We were tight, compact, looked confident on the ball, all this against QPR. Need a quick striker, another CB to give a bit of competition and to cover MP when he is invariably injured, get Clifford signed up and we have the makings of a good squad capable of promotion.

clifford looked ever so good. a good worthwhile exercise and lets hope that if they are not then the new signings can be registered at some point in the week as has already been feared on here. pressure starts next sat.

I'd agree with all you've said, the first eleven looks quite good with the one or two additions you suggested. The thing that's worrying is that it resembles a western film set ............a nice facade, with nothing behind it. As soon as the season starts we're going to be hit by the inevitable injuries and the eventual suspensions, for the moment all we have as replacements is kids. IIRC PB has said that we need at least five more bodies in and there is certainly starting to be a little more candour in his words as the new season edges closer and closer. I, like many others, would be very disappointed if we miss out on the chance of signing Clifford, due to the embargo. Isn't this 'déja vu'? Can't remember the name of the player but didn't Luggy want to sign someone he considered very important for his midfield last year at the same time? He ended up losing the player due to embargo/ lack of funds, or both.

I think Scott Donnelly is the player you are referring to. But apparently Paul Sturrock also saw his plans to bring in a midfielder called Howard (sorry I cannot recall his first name) blown out of the water as well at about this time last year.

Lack of route one? Surely you jest? I thought at times that PS must still be in charge. Whilst the BBBC was on the pitch he was the favoured outlet and he was also unable to do zip with it.
I agree in part that Eastwood did not shine but I still believe he has retained enough technical ability to do something with the ball if he is given it more often. When we lump it up field it negates the FE route.
I believe I saw elements of ability around the squad. Coker looked busy and neat, Straker looked more confident, White looks competent etc but unless we actually realise that there are 11 players in a team and we need to play to their strengths as a unit and not just welly it to our so called great target man, then we are doing no more than the previous regime.
I accept that against lesser opposition we may do better but I hope we do exhibit one or two variant tactical ideas in the process otherwise what have we learned?
