West Ham know like us that the football they play will not work at a higher level. Big Sam will get them up but will not last long in the Prem. See Mick Mccarthy,Roy Keane,Kevin Keagan and many more who won their respective leagues easily but could not cut it at higher level. Could we add Sturrock to that list? I think we will, lets wait and see.

What ???? Keegan took Newcastle to 2nd, 3rd and 6th in the Premiership !!

I'd take any of them in League One next season !

Shocking advert for lower League football. Obviously a very welcome and much needed three points but frankly if it had not been Southend I would not have watched more than the first 10 minutes. Poor fare, indeed.

Although our style of play is the reason why we lose against the better teams because they can deal with that and still play it on the floor, this is my only concern although I'm not convinced we have a plan B. But as others have said I will watch whatever footy Sturrock chooses to play as long as it gets us out of this horrible league.

Agree with this. If Sturrock gets us out this division them hats off to him a marvelous job.....not sure i would like to see another year of his style of play if we dont tho. I have to be honest and havent enjoyed too many games this season, thats just how i've felt.

Horrible league - C....p league S----T league. I am sick of hearing this about a league we have spent a very large percentage of our time playing in.
Wish some of you had more respect for the league. We could try improving the standards by playing better football or we can play garbage football and blame the league. We seem to be doing the latter at the moment.

This league is crap. It was crap in 98-2005 as well and whilst I was too young to remember much of our time in this league in the 80s I reckon it was probably crap then as well. Crap players playing crap football in front of low crowds.

Of course it doesn't mean that we have to play crap football in this league - we didn't under Tilly after all. Personally I'd prefer any style of football that gets us out of this league and into the one above as quickly as possible.

This has only become such a contentious issue because we've not picked up enough points lately to justify the unattractive brand of football that we've become unaccustomed to watching at Roots Hall. Cheers Tilson!!

Even when we were on the crest of our wave a couple of months ago, a number of voices were expressing concerns that, while we were still continuing to pick up points, our poor form could easily see us go into a spiral. To some degree, those fears were founded and it was only our buffer of points that has kept us in and around the top (and somehow still right on top). Whether they were entirely correct or not depends upon how we progress after Gillingham.

It's pretty clear that Sturrock has a tightly defined game plan based on percentages. It's not pretty, but when it works, it works. Our goals scored, goals conceded and points tally before the recent bad run stands testament to that. We've still got an excellent squad and, if we can start to pick up those wins again, I'm sure Sturrock will receive the praise he deserves. If we don't, then the unattractive style will see the rats deserting the ship at a pace.

It's a game plan that's tolerated while it's successful and despised when it's not. A tough path to walk for Mr Sturrock but surely worthy of more praise than a beautifully crafted football-playing side that gets relegated. We're still top of the league. Not as comfortably so (understatement) as we were some time ago, but there's still no need to panic. Yet.

Beefy as ever spot on. I haven't stopped laughing at this thread. Commets from fans whose favourite player was Roy utter c rap MacDonagh looking starry eyed back to the non glory days of their youth. Oh how I long for the glory days of Drew Broughton. Get a grip everyone. Top of the effing league and we still moan. Pathetic.

Very, very lucky to have won. Though I concede we offered more in the first half than the Gills, the hoofball we played was only successful due to the oppositions poor defence. Against a slightly better organised outfit we would have been barren in front of goal again. Except maybe for our second goal. That goal, a nice outside of the foot pass from bil and a low cross from Martin, put the Gills defence to the sword and would have done to many other defences too. It was football. I believe that deck play would be far more successful for us and the like of Dickinson would be better served and score with greater consistency. Accurate passing, as opposed to hoofball, will find this division out. We are capable of that and it is time we produced it. To be honest I think we have enough players of ability that if they started playing football now they could go on and hold their own in league one next season.

Kick and rush football will please neither the fans nor the players, who despite what Sturrock thinks are capable of playing better football. It's no wonder that some of them don't want to do what he says.

They looked quite happy at doing what Sturrock asks last night. Work rate was what won it yesterday. Playing neat one twos or launching it long will not win games without the right attitude and application. Last night proved this.

Interesting that people still go on and on and on about hoofball, yet last night on TV they commented on more than one occasion that we play some nice stuff and deserved the win. The porblem is that when you support a team your views can often be blinkered. The reports in the paper, on the Gills fanzones and on TV didnt at all suggest we play hoof ball. Second half maybe and at times we got desperate, but WE WON THE GAME!!!!

very very good post - dead right

Some people are very feisty on here aren't they?? Calling everyone Cunits for daring to offer up another opinion. My view (if I'm allowed one) is this: At the moment I'm prepared to accept any amount of ugly to get out of this division..and I do mean any amount of ugly. Watching it on the box last night was a real strain...what we did, we did well. But goodness me it's awful to watch. Even more so on the TV for some reason 'cause usually I fork out £20 to watch it.
Love Sturrock. I want him to stay for a lengthy period and lead the club back into the Championship especially as I believe (as others have said) that he can change the style of play where resources allow. At the moment our best hope and resources dictate that we'll play like this to get out of this armpit of a division. If in the future we are challenging the top end of league one....I don't want to be watching the same style I'm afraid.
I know the arguments that people have put forward about "when have we ever been Barcelona then?"...well, we haven't. But by the same token, we have never been 'hoof ball merchants' either. Now you can argue that with me till your blue in the face but the fact of the matter is this: I've been going for 26 years, my old man since around 1960 and my Grandad since the 40's...none of us would have continued to attend if we had played long ball for any significant period of time.
But I shall sit back and suck it up to get outta this league.

As someone has mentioned, the pundits and commentators commented on us playing more football and working harder! Which could be why we are top?
The word hoofball has been adopted by some of you but it makes no sense because our two goals we're well worked moves
1. A group of three or four players press the ball mohsni (I think) won the ball and played it out wide Clohessy then put in a cross, Kane won the header probably should have scored himself it fell to Dicko who got in front of his man and neatly finished.

2. Martin breaks away down the left flank due to a classy ball with the outside of Mohsni's boot, Martin then plays the ball into the box Kane about to score, but the defender looked to prefer to score himself!

Now unless crosses and through balls are both hoofball then both of those goals are due to football playing!

Another moment that springs to mind is when Dicko dummies a shot takes on two men and lays the ball off to bilel who maybe should have done better.
But again, well worked!

Another point I will move onto is how impressed I am with Kane Ferinand, apparently a centre half, moved into defensive midfield (last season) and now moved forward as an attacking force which actually won us the game yesterday!

This is another thing that Sturrock has somehow spotted, Kanes improvement is down to PS and obviously Kane!

Our style of football is so difficult for the opposition to deal with! Because when we do play those long balls up to Dicko who then holds up for Kane and others the defensive line has no here to go! No offside trap can be played as the ball is held up and played outwide!

It requires the oppositions defence to concentrate the whole game and make no mistakes!

However we have played some very nice football!

All hail King Sturrock!

We are at the top of this league because of our squad, our tactics, the management of the team, hard work and belief!

Top performance!
