Breaking News Sturrock on R&D - Player

palexander

Life President
* Very pleased with performance
* Attitude was 'right'
* Trial players did well
* Ben Gill impressed second half for half an hour - will play again Saturday
* Wont sign players for the sake of it though
* Formation was to try out a Plan B for future (Tilson fans take note!)
* Thinks Hall and Soares would very much suit a 4-3-3
* Eastbourne will be difficult to field our 'first XI' due to injuries. Will have to be working the side out as the season starts.
* Happy with how they are gelling, but they are not a 'team' yet and are yet to win a game - wants a 'dirty 1-0 win to get some confidence'

Tilly had a Plan B. Trouble is that we looked woeful every time we deviated from 4-4-2.

Yea, I dont think its necessarily just a formation thing though... how often did Tilson throw a CB up front last 10 mins? Dont think he ever did that I recall.

Its little things like that that might just change a game.

Hopefully, the sort of thing with PS's experience that we might see if needed.

Maybe he didn't think that throwing a centre-back up front in the last ten minutes was a particularly good idea? (although Barrett and Clarke both did do it plenty of times, although not in the last couple of seasons).

Thats his prerogative of course, its just an example - plenty of managers do it.

I think that had more to do with the players at our disposal, rather than tactics. If we're going to use a 4-5-1/4-3-3 formation, it's vital that we have natural wingers with the confidence and guile to get past defenders and create chances. Since Gower, the only two we've had in that bracket were the constantly injured Scannell and the hugely temperamental Laurent.

Yeah how we got two successive promotions, beat Man Utd, took Chelsea to 1-1 I'll never know.

another thing, when I spoke to Petts a few years back, I asked him what his and Gower's tactics were. Basically, he said, Gower had a free role on whatever wing he wanted to play on, and Petts went to the other wing and tucked in.

I also know that Che's dad used to slag off Gower all the time for not tracking back and protecting poor old Che. Mind you, he also thought Drewe was a donkey, so what does he know.

People who think friendly results don't matter - take note

yea, but what Luggy is saying is what most of us are trying to say to you - yes, at this stage it probably does matter. Dartford, Derby, Salisbury was more about fitness and trying to get a team together.

Of course it would be nice to get a win, but its not the be-all-and-end-all.

Not very often though, we never went for it. So many times last season we needed a goal. Did we chuck on another forward or push a CB up front ? No, we stuck with the same old 4-4-2.

I seem to remember winning at Orient last season with a 4-5-1 system. But I agree, although I remember "going for it" against Hartlepool at home when they were down to 10 men and we were losing 2-1 at H-T, we went 3 upfront if I remember rightly and eventually won the game also Norwich at home in the CCC. Not everything is black and white!

We drew the Norwich game 3-3... Harrold scored the last minute equaliser and Delia threw a fit in the directors seats.
