I just think that it's another example of how precious football fans are. Happy to give out stick in the ground and on message boards but not happy to get even a gentle prod back.

I'm not trying to contrast him with Tilly but plenty of people on here used to moan about him not saying anything in his post-match comments.

Agree completely with this.

Top Man Paul Sturrock IMO

With our Budget anything that gets us way from the relegation zone or as high as possible in the Table need applauding not criticism

Some People need to move on from our Tilson era I know it’s hard to move on cos as I still badly Miss David Webb

THERE ONLY ONE PAUL STURROCK ONE PAUL STURROCK........... ONLY ONE DAVID WEBB J:clap:

Leave the man alone for god sake. The amount of crap he has had to endure from fans who think they know what they are talking about, he is entitled to his opinion back.
It's all part of being a manager and he should be big enough to not let it get to him, that comment and the way he comes on a chat forum to try and justify himself tells me he has lost the plot, if he ever had it that is.

The people who berate Sturrock should be very careful what they wish for.
Unless we get promotion this year , which I hope but doubt given the current squad / finances etc , then I guess this may be Sturrocks final season here.
If he were to walk away ( disillusioned , unpaid or for whatever reason ) or get the sack ( 3 seasons is a long time for Div 2 sides ) , who are we going to attract ?
Seriously ?
The guy dug us out of deep crap in year one and got a huge points tally in year 2.
I think many on here could look back in a years time and wish they'd been a little more supportrive of the man.

yessssssss!

To reiterate my point, I am a huge PS fan, just thought that comment was a sort of "I told you so" comment

well done mate I don't get the paul sturrock haters,he's doing a cracking job at a selling club.

in fairness there are 20 (21 if I had anything extra to add) posters on this thread with pro sturrock comments , 4 anti, and a couple neither obviously for or against (judged purely on this thread)

That doesn't actually ring true as we attracted Sturrock when the club was in a worse position than it is now, Football is a results business and i think the most telling part of your post is that PS wont last beyond 3 years if we don't get promotion and rightly so. I hope he succeeds but there is no need for the sniping comment at fans, he plays hoof/direct football we all know it, just get us out of this ****ing god awful division and stop your whining!!!

Armchair pundits who seem to have little if any understanding of how the game is played at this level. You are not going to see silky passing football up against 10 behind the ball, unless you have really deep pockets. Getting it over the top may not be to the pure armchair pundit the way the noble game is played, but it got results last year.

I spent 20 years watching every home game and and a fair few away games, some of the dross we put out in the late 60's to mid 80's painful, when a win was all we hoped for and avoiding re-election.

IMO , given the fact that the club ( and most clubs come to that ) are losing money month by month , then I would argue that we are in a worse position now than two years ago.
The sales of Ferdinand and possibly Hall and Mohsni may bridge some gap , but surely the shortfall has increased.

I think all of us just want us out of this Division , but seriously wonder going forward whether out of the division means going up or down.

I believe Paul Sturrock accepted the post here as no one else were prepared to take him on ( at the time) because of his illness. I think Ron was quoted as saying that upon Sturrock's appointment. No I'm not Anti-Sturrock.

I didn't see it so how did the ball get into the crossing position in the first place? Had it been worked there through an intricate passing move or had the ball gone up quickly and was then played wide to Harris?

Sturrock's philosophy has never been a John Beck-style long ball up to the big fella who flicks it on to the other fella to score. It's about getting the ball into the final third as quickly as possible and then playing from there.

I cant understand why John Beck 's revolutionary style of play is continually snubbed . I very much doubt tiny Cambridge Utd , now back to being a struggling non league club , could believe they would ever be on the verge of a premiership level club .... I for one would honestly rather see the 100% passion of direct football than tippy tappy shot shy pansy footy these multi millionaires act out . I realise its not 'trendy'. I realise sometimes its not pretty , but i would very much doubt any Southend United supporter reading this would honestly turn down the chance to live the dream of a real shot at the big time , even if it meant playing somewhat "agriculturally".

Paul Sturrock knows his stuff. He has definitely been upset by a few moaning minnies mumbling on about "hoofball". Hence the attempt to change style. Hence the poor start to the season. As i have banged on about often this season , Sturrock should stick to his guns + keep playing direct football ( with more support from attacking midfielders picking up the loose balls ) + keep producing very successful football teams. Direct football is not hoofball . Getting the ball forward quickly , holding it up then supporting in numbers at pace is what its all about at this level + the sooner we get back to playing this way + us fans show our support then the sooner we will get promoted.

I am not knocking PS for speaking his mind, I think it's great when a manager says what he thinks about his team and about fans comments. I wish he would do it more often and it shows he is listening to our comments. Though some on here had a go at me when I said he would listen and they said he's above all that.
The only problem with his comment is he has tried to pull the wool over our eyes by calling it Hoofball when in fact it was a normal cross. Also there is not a team in the world who would not hoof it into the area and hope for the best on 90 minutes in a cup game with no extra time. Hoofing it up front and hoping for the best in the 1st minute is something different though.
Please have your say Paul , you will not hear me complain about that. But your kidding no one with this one.

Whats that got to do with the price of fish ?

The point is we are lucky to have someone with his reputation and if he leaves how do we attract anyone of the same calibre.

The fact we got Sturrock may or may not be because no one else was willing to take a chance, if that was the case thats even more reason for people to be wary of who comes next.

We ended the season 2nd in the form table after we stopped playing that style of football. Prior to that using the direct style of football we were 16th in the form table and falling away from the top of the table, only by changing did we get to within a point of automatic promption.

Do we really need to go back to how we were playing which led us to throw away a 10 point lead?

Jam I agree with you. Kent was saying We attracted Sturrock's interest and I said we did so because other teams were a bit weary of taking someone on his condition which left us as his only real option as a result of that. Ron's comments in july 2010.
