Storm in Southend last night!

You love lightning then... would you like it if you were close to being struck by lightning, killing you?

I was in a caravan at the time of the storm, and it sounded awful! The lightning was just about missing the caravan I was staying in.

Well it was sheet lightning in Eastwood, and that kills nobody as it covers the sky only and does not try and find an earth!!

You are pretty safe in a caravan in a thunderstorm. If the 'van is hit by lightning the metal acts as a Faraday's Cage, and anyone inside is protected.

Well, that's good to know, and the news that a school round the corner to the site had caught fire didn't really comfort me.

I dunno, if their are domestic electrics inside the caravan, there must be some form of earthing arrangement or it's a death trap.

Have to make sure everything is shut though, or your screwed!

No, openings don't make much difference. The metal shell conducts the current around the interior not through it. Lightning will show an immense preference for the metal shell, not the opening.

It's not to do with it being earthed or not. As above, the metal shell conducts the current around the interior and it flows down to earth regardless. Having earthing might make it more likely to be struck in the first place, but you are still safe if inside. Aeroplanes are struck by lightning fairly often, same principle applies.

Oh yeah, I'm sure you're fine. I'd imagine a caravan is earthed through the axles and wheels. I'll have at look at the regs when I get into work, bound to be in the 16th edition.

How come when the DeLorean was hit by lightning at the end of Back to the Future II, the lightning didn't travel around the aluminium shell but instead was channelled directly into the Flux Capacitor sending the Doc back to 1885?

Hmmm... in preparation for the film quiz, didn't Marty go back to 1985 at the end of Back To The Future 2, and then into the Wild West in 3?

Marty was stranded in 1955 at the end of 2 after the lightning accidentally sent the Doc back to 1885. Marty then went back to the Wild West in 3.

I'll need time to think about that, and I'll get back to you......

Apparently tonight's storms are going to be monsoon-like. Time to fix that loose slate/tile on your roof I think.
