Unbelievably on twitter now in desperation to show tonights gate was poor one of the boycott groups is putting up a comparison with other gates- the two they have picked H vs Millwall and Bristol Rovers Nov 2105- what they fail to mention is that one was a QF and the other a SF and a local derby..

I guess if one thing the politicians have taught people is how to completely misrepresent reality and present it as fact.
It was our lowest attendance since 2000. So that means all the first round JPT games since then have had higher attendances than tonight, the boycott group probably couldn't find them or didn't have time seeing as there's only been a short amount of time to compile stats. Bristol Rovers was a 3rd round game, there's rarely much variation in attendances from the 1st to 3rd round. The attendances don't really increase that much until the area final so I think the comparison to that game is fine. Millwall may have been an area semi final game but I think it's fairly obvious that had it been a first round game it would still have been a much higher attendance than tonight.

The facts are there for all to see for the attendances being poor in general tonight: Last seasons competition had no sub 1000 attendances, tonight there were seven. Some teams recorded their lowest ever attendance for a competitive fixture, with others recording their lowest attendance for decades. 308 home fans at the Fleetwood game sums it up.

There are plenty of comparisons that can be made with first round games from previous years that show attendances being much lower across the board tonight compared to the old format. Here's an example from the BBC 'Attendance for Posh vs Norwich U23 - 1,696 (117 away fans). 3,149 watched Posh vs Leyton Orient in their last home first round tie in 2014.'

Positives can be taken from our result and the introduction of youth team players but there is no denying that this new format hasn't worked at all and has drastically driven down attendances rather than raising them like it was supposed to.

It was about raising money. 3 group games will add up to a bigger attendance than one round. Plus we have £30,000 to play for.

It's only 2 home games though not 3 so it won't necessarily add up to more. Our 2 home attendances will probably add up
to around 2500 whereas a first round game against Col U, Millwall or Charlton could potentially attract 4000+. I doubt we're going to get any money for the attendance at Stevenage away (which will most likely be less than 1000 anyway). There's £30,000 to play for but the chances of many teams actually winning all 3 group games and getting the £30,000 are pretty slim.

The issue people have is with the B teams not the group stage (although a group stage game will get lower attendances anyway as it's less appealing than a knockout fixture). There could still be a group stage and a £10,000 win bonus without the B teams that have angered the fans.

And that Posh-Orient game was live on t'telly...

Pretty proud of our sub-1,000 attendance tonight. Third lowest gate in our entire history. #bteamboycott

The last thing we needed as a club would have been Millwall at home last night. We would have had a much stronger side ( debateable) as it would be knock-out and missed out on all the benefits of 7 changes.

After we comfortably win our group, then we can still play one of our rivals with an even bigger and happier crowd. :winking:

Not sure if it worked, but on hunting around youtube for the goals, I found several "live" streaming links set up for last night's game.

For example :-

Wondering if they might work for the next two matches.

These links are usually set up purely to get people to click onto them... The games are never actually live on YouTube, unfortunately! :(

On the other hand it was a weakened Southend team verses an U23 side- where is the like for like comparison with that? Not sure too many games verses U21s we have played in have got a better gate the 1275? Real test will be against the other teams in the group where we will put out a stronger team too. We shall see.

Thats the point though isnt it, the fact they are U23 teams is damaging attendances.

There is no like for like comparison because we are comparing two different formats, and all you need take from it is that the new format has attracted even less people.

Even the Bolton v Everton game was empty.

I did think before the game that there might be a good loanee player to be spotted but no Brighton player caught the eye as being " in the shop window" for some league games. Rea would have shone in their side. I suspect they will do a better job in their next game v Steve Borough and we will use the O s game well too.
