I have just seen that people are at RH clearing the pitch now.
I thought they were going to do it in the morning

If I was in charge I would clear a small section of the pitch now and check to see if its frozen underneath at the moment. That way you could save a lot of money and disappointment tomorrow.....

I guess this means that Ron has decided that this game will go ahead - no expense spared just to prove a point to a former groundsman and critical fans.

Whether any one from more than 10 miles away fancies struggling to get to the game, including Walsall fans who it seems will probably have to come down a snowy M1 is irrelevant to him. I wouldn't bank on public transport being reliable in any way particularly if it still snowing tonight.

Sounds to me like you've already got a ticket for the game squire and you're a bit miffed because you thought you'd get your money back for a postponement. :winking:

Lots of us managed it in January 1979 for a night game......31,033 I believe is the official figure.

I find this interesting as normally fans are desperate for a game to be on, but in this case it seems most really want it to be perhaps out of sympathy for the travelling Walsall fans, given our experiences at Oldham and Rochdale recently.

Personally I am desperate for it to be on even though I live an hour away and will probably have an 'interesting journey', will be a very boring Saturday without football.

I think their efforts will fail but I certainly don't blame the club for wanting to give the game every chance. Basically they know that with the fixtures backing up any slim chance of making the playoffs will be over with only a small, injury-prone squad.

I think rightly or wrongly they will wait until tomorrow to make the call but I hope they do it early for the sake of those making an arduous journey.

If the game is on and I decide it's not worth the hassle trying to get there i.e. blocked roads and cancelled trains I shall email them before the game and ask for a refund - they still have my ticket waiting for collection so they should know I haven't used it.

I was there - it was clear all day and started snowing heavily for an hour at about 6pm totally different circumstances. Most of the 31,033 were probably already in the town and postponing it at that short notice would have been a nightmare.

You'll remember that the game had originally been postponed on the Saturday.

To be fair if you travel by Greater Anglia they don't run any trains anyway.

They are certainly not running any tomorrow - the whole line is closed for engineering works.

Which just leaves C2C. So if the trains are running I'd probably give it a whirl, if not, I wouldn't risk the roads from the Sussex coast. They need to make their minds up by 11 am though.

More postponements this morning, including Ipswich.

Down to 5 games remaining in our division.

Luxury. You try telling kids that today and they won't believe you. We used to live in a hole in t' ground wit' tarpaulin over top:winking:.

You were lucky then. We couldn't afford a tarpaulin to cover the hole we lived in. And, if it was cold we had to sit around a candle to keep warm. If it was really cold, we were allowed to light it.

Let's add a little "science" to the discussion.

Just back from the allotment where I have removed some snow to test the ground underneath.

True, the allotment is in a sheltered position ........... and there is a layer of rotting horse manure covering the soil ....... but the ground was not frozen very hard at all. True - the top is crusty but overall I was quite surprised.

I am now beginning to think that it will be the "environs" for the football ground that will be the key consideration.

The weather report is looking favourable. I guess it will be a case of brinkmanship for the club with regards the condition of the pitch and surrounding areas, and the right time to make a decision.

Only light snow and sleet forecast for this afternoon (as has been for the last couple of days).

I think the club have handled this perfectly so far. Unless it gets called off about 2pm tomorrow then fair play to everyone, even if it’s called off earlier tomorrow.
