id have been taken along with my dad and my neighbour George whos son stephen, id kick a ball about with him in front of our house with the street names metal frame used as a goal post...wed get into georges mini. leave Rayleigh....get to the ground and set up behind the south just off from the goals....looking over the shoulder up the mighty bank maybe a handfull of away fans but i never really knew from what land they had come from. i was still yet to discover the delights of Geography with Miss M Jones....half time would be Tommy soup from the flask happy days indeed...on a note i sat with Neil Townsend a couple of years ago in our local barbers...i couldnt believe it nor could he that i mentioned his name....

There always used to be a family who would sit on the terraces behind the South Bank goal at half time and enjoy some home made food/drink.

Never forget them. They were there every game. Sounds like it could be yourselves.

What goes around comes around:thumbsup:.

Look at Dave Cunningham breaking the mould though with his white boots. Must have got them from Johnson & Sage opposite my school at Chalkwell Hall, or poss HW Stones in Leigh?
Spud Taylor was the first Southend player to wear white boots , he first wore them against Swansea in 72 .

You were also allowed to tackle and not allowed to roll around on the floor like a nancy if someone so much as blew in your ear.

*Pedant Alert*

I have fond memories of watching Terry Johnson clutching his calf after a strong challenge and doing a fair impression of the Dying Swan, and as soon as he had been given the free kick he was off and sprinting down the wing to receive the ball while my brother and I roared with laughter at his successful duplicity....

Arthur Rowley is going to lead us to the promised land of Division 2 I have every confidence in him. Reckon we could get 25000 per game in that league

Might see you in the Tavern after the game 'Seventies' then we are going on to the Talk of the South or might be Scamps, as 'Rootshallbloke' said it might be good there Friday night.

Yes Andy, the only trouble is that The Tavern has been a bit dead lately, there's a rumour going around that it might close down. I sure would like to get into those disco's, but don't look old enough yet. I've seen some lovely looking young women in those queues, so can't wait. As for the game, I love watching Terry Johnson fly down that wing, he's also the best crosser of the ball I have seen so far.

Old Club pics 2.jpgWas going to Scamps ,but since the Zero has that room with the old aircraft seats where you can watch match of the day with your light and bitter in comfort no contest.....then come out for the 1st slow dance session of the night:winking:

Cannot get into Scamps,barred..the bouncers put me in hospital last friday night..Jesse.B. followed me there an hour or so later.....but revenge was sweet the following night:smile:

Ooh yes I remember that night well. Fights with bouncers all over Southend High Street, went on for hours. About the same time The Sutton was on the front of National Newspapers for fights with Squaddies at Annabellas.

75-76 some tossers razed some Squaddies out side the Sutton Arms , the following night about 30 of them planed an attack on The Sutton Arms , they charged all doors to get in , amassive ruck took place and the Southend mob came of worse . The army said they would hold an internal enqirey , asa far as I know none of the soldiers were ever charged .
